Perspectives Of Higher Education Administrators And Staff: Programs And Services For First Generation College Students, Latishua E. Lewis

Dissertations

This dissertation is an investigation of the perspectives of higher education administrators and staff who provide services that support the academic and social sustainability of African American first generation college students (FGCS). In this study the researcher operated in a dual capacity. The two roles the researcher served as are FGCS and staff member. The researcher is a first generation college student and provides programs and services for the FGCS student population. The participants were from two urban institutions that are in the same overarching academic system. This inquiry focused on administrators and staff sharing their perspectives in narrative form. …

Revisiting Local History And Ghostly Memory In Shawna Yang Ryan’S Locke 1928, Chia-Rong Wu Aug 2012

Revisiting Local History And Ghostly Memory In Shawna Yang Ryan’S Locke 1928, Chia-Rong Wu

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

With a focus on the changing process of Chinese American haunting, this article is drawn to Shawna Yang Ryan, a less-known, mixed heritage Chinese American writer. Ryan finds her own way of looking into the older Chinese American past in Locke 1928 (2007). Unlike Maxine Hong Kingston and Amy Tan, Ryan remains devoted to a specified locale in Chinese America and a historically bound ghost story and without seeking the formulation of the Chinese American identity in the present. Through the revenge of the water ghosts, Ryan re-writes the local history of Locke town and re-negotiates the cross-cultural memory of …

American Orientalism And Cosmopolitan Mixed Race: Early Asian American Mixed Race In The American Literary Imagination, Melissa Eriko Poulsen Aug 2012

American Orientalism And Cosmopolitan Mixed Race: Early Asian American Mixed Race In The American Literary Imagination, Melissa Eriko Poulsen

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

This paper offers and initial examination of representations of Asian American mixed race during the long period of Asian exclusion and enforced anti-miscegenation when racial mixing was legally proscribed. I argue that this literature must be understood through two categories – Orientalist texts that produce and reproduce dominant discourses about Asian American mixed race and cosmopolitan texts written by mixed-race figures circling in vanguard cliques of art and literature. After tracking the representations of early Asian American mixed race in U.S. literature, this paper offers an analysis of the writing of Asian American mixed-race authors themselves in order to expand …

Realizing Blacknpinay: Negotiating Notions Of Authenticity In Janet Stickmon’S Crushing Soft Rubies, Teresa Hodges Aug 2012

Realizing Blacknpinay: Negotiating Notions Of Authenticity In Janet Stickmon’S Crushing Soft Rubies, Teresa Hodges

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

Despite racism, challenges from family and communities, and oppression within schooling, Janet Stickmon’s memoir Crushing Soft Rubies exposes how she navigates and ultimately finds home in a world that does not always work in her favor as a mixed Black and Filipina woman; however, it also shows how she realizes her agency in the process. In using her counternarrative as a tool for engaging critical dialogue about identity, power, and authenticity, her text is valuable in these negotiations that help one to be at home in one’s identities.

The Abjection Of James Dean: Mixed Media/Mixed Race Performances In Ai's Poem, "James Dean", Cathy Irwin Aug 2012

The Abjection Of James Dean: Mixed Media/Mixed Race Performances In Ai's Poem, "James Dean", Cathy Irwin

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

This paper investigates how the developmental process of the Japanese-Black-Choctaw-Irish American poet Ai translates into a creative process that integrates aspects of identity thrown out or made abject by dominant cultural norms and ideals. Just as Ai once disidentified with parts of her identity to discover and integrate her abject Japanese heritage, Ai's dramatic monologue "James Dean" explores the intersections where the poetic voice-the narrator or subject speaking-disidentifies with the cinematic and textual image of iconic white, heterosexual masculinity in order to integrate a sexuality that usually constitutes its "outside." In the process, this paper argues that by mixing print …

Teaching Chang-Rae Lee’S _Aloft_: Exploring The Limits Of Race And Ethnicity, Jaime Cleland Aug 2012

Teaching Chang-Rae Lee’S _Aloft_: Exploring The Limits Of Race And Ethnicity, Jaime Cleland

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

Chang-rae Lee’s 2004 novel Aloft may not be his most famous work, but it is a highly effective classroom text. In its contemporary, multicultural, suburban setting, it portrays a world that students recognize; simultaneously, however, it can effectively challenge their assumptions about ethnic American literature. The novel centers on Jerry Battle, an amateur pilot who distances himself from his problems in his private jet, and explores the problems of four generations of his multi-ethnic family. The Battles, with both Italian and Korean heritage, are representative of the current landscape of race and ethnicity in America; mixed-race identities have become accepted …

Disturbing Stereotypes: Fu Man/Chan And Dragon Lady Blossoms, Audrey Wu Clark

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

Article Submission (Accepted with Revisions): “Disturbing Stereotypes: Fu Man/Chan and Dragon Lady Blossoms” Article Abstract: In documenting anti-miscegenation laws in the United States, critic Sally L. Kitch argues that they were not only directed against mixed heritage African Americans but also against Asians after the Civil War. Kitch writes, “Fourteen states, including many that entered the Union after the war, adopted or revised anti-miscegenation statutes to apply to ‘Mongolians,’ or ‘Malays’ in general or to the Chinese in particular. Gender was also paramount to western lawmakers as they determined that the ‘blacks’ white women were most likely to marry were …

Excursus On "Hapa;" Or The Fate Of Identity, Nicole Myoshi Rabin Aug 2012

Excursus On "Hapa;" Or The Fate Of Identity, Nicole Myoshi Rabin

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

This paper focuses on the contradictions and tensions inherent in self-identification and oppositional identities. In the past twenty years, Hapa has emerged as an oppositional identity used by mixed-race Asian Americans. While many scholars have noted the tension of the term for its linguistic appropriation from the Native Hawaiian language, fewer scholars have concentrated their examinations on the ways in which the term reproduces the very notions it aims to subvert. This paper concentrates on the areas of contradiction inherent in finding and using "a word of power" and making that word into a recognizable identity.

A Hapa Family In Chekhov's Three Sisters, Elizabeth Liang Aug 2012

A Hapa Family In Chekhov's Three Sisters, Elizabeth Liang

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

It is an act of courage or foolhardiness to produce theatre in the heart of the film world, depending on your point of view and how large the houses turn out to be. In the fall of 2005, I produced Three Sisters in a 60-seat theatre in Burbank, California (home of Disney and Warner Bros.). The odds were stacked even higher against the show's success when I stipulated that the main characters, the upper-class and highly educated Russian Prozorov siblings, had to be played by hapa actors. This essay describes my attempt to interpret the play through a multi-ethnic lens …

Just How Important Is The River?, University Of Dayton

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton

Some people look to the river for their favorite fishing spot. Some people like to swim or tube in the river. Other people use the river for canoeing. I've even seen people kayaking in a river! But this summer, I discovered a new appreciation for a river and what it can do for a community. Other than the recreational activities already mentioned, I used a river to charge a phone, to watch the Olympics, and even to read a book. I used the river for electricity.

Present And Potential Future Distribution Of Common Vampire Bats In The Americas And The Associated Risk To Cattle, Dana N. Lee, Monica Papeş, Ronald A. Van Den Bessche Aug 2012

Present And Potential Future Distribution Of Common Vampire Bats In The Americas And The Associated Risk To Cattle, Dana N. Lee, Monica Papeş, Ronald A. Van Den Bessche

KIP Articles

Success of the cattle industry in Latin America is impeded by the common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, through decreases in milk production and mass gain and increased risk of secondary infection and rabies. We used ecological niche modeling to predict the current potential distribution of D. rotundus and the future distribution of the species for the years 2030, 2050, and 2080 based on the A2, A1B, and B1 climate scenarios from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. We then combined the present day potential distribution with cattle density estimates to identify areas where cattle are at higher risk for the …

Structural Dynamic Modification Of Vibrating Structures Using Topology Optimization / Sajjad Zargham, Zargham Sajjad Aug 2012

Structural Dynamic Modification Of Vibrating Structures Using Topology Optimization / Sajjad Zargham, Zargham Sajjad

Student Works (2010-2019)

This thesis presents a structural dynamic modification of vibrating structures by using topology optimization method in order to find the most effective design of a structure supporting rotating machinery. Modal testing and operating deflection shape (ODS) measurement were applied to identify the dynamic characteristics of a pedestal structure. The dynamic characteristics of the structure were ascertained to validate the finite element model. Then, topology optimization method was used to determine the optimum design of the structure. Results from modal testing showed that the structure has two natural frequencies at 12.1 Hz (left to right bending), and 16.7 Hz (rear to …

Laser-Induced Bound-State Phases In High-Order-Harmonic Generation, Adam Etches, Mette B. Gaarde, Lars Bojer Madsen

Faculty Publications

We present single-molecule and macroscopic calculations showing that laser-induced Stark shifts contribute significantly to the phase of high-order harmonics from polar molecules. This is important for orbital tomography, where phases of field-free dipole matrix elements are needed in order to reconstruct molecular orbitals. We derive an analytical expression that allows the first-order Stark phase to be subtracted from experimental measurements. © 2012 American Physical Society.

We report a measurement of the proton-air cross section for particle production at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon of 57 TeV. This is derived from the distribution of the depths of shower maxima observed with the Pierre Auger Observatory: systematic uncertainties are studied in detail. Analyzing the tail of the distribution of the shower maxima, a proton-air cross section of [505±22(stat)-36+28(syst)]mb is found. © 2012 American Physical Society.

The surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory can detect neutrinos with energy E ν between 1017 eV and 10 20 eV from point-like sources across the sky south of +55° and north of -65° declinations. A search has been performed for highly inclined extensive air showers produced by the interaction of neutrinos of all flavors in the atmosphere (downward-going neutrinos), and by the decay of tau leptons originating from tau neutrino interactions in Earth's crust (Earth-skimming neutrinos). No candidate neutrinos have been found in data up to 2010 May 31. This corresponds to an equivalent exposure of ∼3.5years …

We present the results of a LIGO search for gravitational waves (GWs) associated with GRB 051103, a short-duration hard-spectrum gamma-ray burst (GRB) whose electromagnetically determined sky position is coincident with the spiral galaxy M81, which is 3.6Mpc from Earth. Possible progenitors for short-hard GRBs include compact object mergers and soft gamma repeater (SGR) giant flares. A merger progenitor would produce a characteristic GW signal that should be detectable at a distance of M81, while GW emission from an SGR is not expected to be detectable at that distance. We found no evidence of a GW signal associated with GRB 051103. …
