Bypassing Civil Gideon: A Legislative Proposal, Erin B. Corcoran Sep 2012

Bypassing Civil Gideon: A Legislative Proposal, Erin B. Corcoran

Law Faculty Scholarship

Eighty-four percent of immigrants appearing before immigration judges are unrepresented. Immigration judges are overwhelmed with the dual role of adjudicating cases and serving as counsel to pro se individuals appearing before them. In addition, due to the rising costs of retaining a lawyer, immigrants are turning to immigrant consultants. These incompetent and unscrupulous individuals are preying on vulnerable immigrants and engaging in the unauthorized practice of law. In addressing unmet legal needs for immigrants, most advocacy efforts for immigrants regarding the acquisition of competent representation focus on persuading the courts that immigrants appearing before an immigration judge have a constitutional …

Prospects For Nanoparticle-Based Permanent Magnets, Balamurugan Balamurugan, David J. Sellmyer, George C. Hadjipanayis, Ralph Skomski

David Sellmyer Publications

Magnetic nanoparticles smaller than ~15 nm in diameter and with high magnetocrystalline anisotropies K1 ≥ 1 MJ m−3 can be used as building blocks for next-generation permanent magnets. Advances in processing steps are discussed, such as self-assembly, alignment of the easy axes and appropriate nanostructuring that will enable the fabrication of densely packed nanoparticle assemblies with improved permanent-magnet properties. This study also proposes an idealized nanocomposite structure for nanoparticle-based future permanent magnets with enhanced energy products.

The Essential Digital Signal Processing In Hf Radar Target Detection, Qianzhao Lei Sep 2012

The Essential Digital Signal Processing In Hf Radar Target Detection, Qianzhao Lei

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The moving target detection with HF radar must go through four steps of signal processing, namely pre-processing, range processing, azimuth processing and subsequent processing. Pre-processing is mainly the low-pass filtering and signal sampling. Range processing, which is used to produce the initial distance information, mainly includes the low-pass filter processing and fast Fourier transform (FFT). Azimuth processing is by using the adaptive beamforming, which in compliance with the linearly constrained minimum variance benchmark, to do the weighted processing; then by doing another FFT, to get a formula with a delta function and a Sinc function, this formula contains the moving …

Repetitive Tracking Control Of Nonlinear Systems Using Reinforcement Fuzzy-Neural Adaptive Iterative Learning Controller, Ying-Chung Wang, Chiang-Ju Chien Sep 2012

Repetitive Tracking Control Of Nonlinear Systems Using Reinforcement Fuzzy-Neural Adaptive Iterative Learning Controller, Ying-Chung Wang, Chiang-Ju Chien

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper proposes a new fuzzy neural network based reinforcement adaptive iterative learning controller for a class of nonlinear systems. Different from some existing reinforcement learning schemes, the reinforcement adaptive iterative learning controller has the advantages of rigorous proofs without using an approximation of the plant Jacobian. The critic is appended into the reinforcement adaptive iterative learning controller to generate the simple discrete reinforcement signal, which provides a satisfaction about the tracking performance. In addition, the reinforcement signal can be further applied in the weight adaptation rules. Iterative learning components of the reinforcement adaptive iterative learning controller are designed to …

Unsteady Flow Of A Viscous Fluid Between Two Oscillating Cylinders, Imran Siddique, Sehrish Iftikhar Sep 2012

Unsteady Flow Of A Viscous Fluid Between Two Oscillating Cylinders, Imran Siddique, Sehrish Iftikhar

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The starting solutions corresponding to the motions of a Newtonian fluid, between two infinite circular cylinders, are determined by means of the Laplace and finite Hankel transforms. The general case, when both cylinders oscillate along their common axis and around the same axis, is considered. The solutions that have been obtained are presented as sum of the steady-state and transient solutions and satisfy all imposed initial and boundary conditions. Finally, the resulting shear stresses are also determined. The time required to attain the steady-state has been obtained by means of the graphical illustrations.

Modeling Complex Systems By Functional Subsystems Representation And Thermostatted-Ktap Methods, Carlo Bianca Sep 2012

Modeling Complex Systems By Functional Subsystems Representation And Thermostatted-Ktap Methods, Carlo Bianca

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In the last two decades the mathematical modeling of real-world complex systems has received much attention. These systems are composed by a high number of interacting entities which are able to express a specific strategy. In order to reduce complexity, the whole system is decomposed in different subsystems that are sets of heterogeneous entities having the ability of expressing the same function. The microscopic interactions among the functional subsystems generate the emerging behaviors that are typical of the complex systems. This paper is concerned with suitable developments of the methods of mathematical kinetic theory for active particles for the modeling …

On Construction Of Symmetric Compactly Supported Biorthogonal Multiwavelets With Short Sequences, Yi-Gang Cen, Li-Hui Cen, Xiao-Fang Chen Sep 2012

On Construction Of Symmetric Compactly Supported Biorthogonal Multiwavelets With Short Sequences, Yi-Gang Cen, Li-Hui Cen, Xiao-Fang Chen

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

A novel approach for constructing symmetric compactly supported biorthogonal multiwavelets with short sequences is proposed in this paper. For some symmetric types of biorthogonal multiwavelet systems, starting from the symmetric properties of scaling and wavelet functions, parameterized symmetric forms of polyphase matrices can be derived. Furthermore, according to the matrix equations of the perfect reconstruction condition, the parameters of polyphase matrices can be reduced, which finally leads to our proposed algorithm for the construction of symmetric compactly supported biorthogonal multiwavelets with short sequences.

A Projected Gradient Method For A High-Order Model In Image Restoration Problems, Zhi-Feng Pang, Baoli Shi, Lihong Huang Sep 2012

A Projected Gradient Method For A High-Order Model In Image Restoration Problems, Zhi-Feng Pang, Baoli Shi, Lihong Huang

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Based on the augmented Lagrangian strategy, we propose a projected gradient method for solving the high-order model in image restoration problems. Based on the Berm`udez and Moreno (BM) algorithm, the convergence of the proposed method is proved. We also give the relationship that the semi-implicit gradient descent method can be deduced from the projected gradient method. Some numerical experiments are arranged to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method for restoring the gray-level and color images.

Target Detecting In Sea Clutter With Echo State Network, Z. Xu, J.W. Wan Sep 2012

Target Detecting In Sea Clutter With Echo State Network, Z. Xu, J.W. Wan

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper use echo state network (ESN), feedforward echo state network (FE-ESN) and tapped delay line with inputs (TDL-I) to predict the sea clutter time series and detect target embedded in sea clutter. The performance of predicting and detecting using these methods is compared. A set of time series from IPIX radar data is tested. Numerical experiments reveal that FE-ESN and TDL-I show high prediction precision and good detection effect as same as ESN. Furthermore, FE-ESN and TDL-I have simplication architecture.

Well-Posedness Of The Modified Crank-Nicholson Difference Schemes In C, Allaberen Ashyralyev Sep 2012

Well-Posedness Of The Modified Crank-Nicholson Difference Schemes In C, Allaberen Ashyralyev

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In the present paper the modified Crank-Nicholson difference schemes for the approximate solutions of the nonlocal boundary value problem v 0 (t) + Av(t) = f(t)(0 ≤ t ≤ 1), v(0) = v(λ) + µ, 0 < λ ≤ 1 for differential equations in an arbitrary Banach space E with the strongly positive operator A are considered. The well-posedness of these difference schemes in C β,γ τ (E) and Ce β,γ τ (E) spaces is established. In applications, the coercive stability estimates for the solutions of difference schemes of the second order of accuracy over time and of an arbitrary order of accuracy over space variables in the case of the nonlocal boundary value problem for the 2mth-order multidimensional parabolic equation are obtained

Robust Stability And Stabilization Of Nonlinear Uncertain Stochastic Switched Discrete-Time Systems With Interval Time-Varying Delays, G. Rajchakit Sep 2012

Robust Stability And Stabilization Of Nonlinear Uncertain Stochastic Switched Discrete-Time Systems With Interval Time-Varying Delays, G. Rajchakit

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper is concerned with robust stability and stabilization of nonlinear uncertain stochastic switched discrete time-delay systems. The system to be considered is subject to interval time-varying delays, which allows the delay to be a fast time-varying function and the lower bound is not restricted to zero. Based on the discrete Lyapunov functional, a switching rule for the robust stability and stabilization for the nonlinear uncertain stochastic discrete time-delay system is designed via linear matrix inequalities. Numerical examples are included to illustrate the effectiveness of the results.

A Computation-Efficient Three-Party Encrypted Key Exchange Protocol, Cheng-Chi Lee, Shun-Der Chen, Chin-Ling Chen Sep 2012

A Computation-Efficient Three-Party Encrypted Key Exchange Protocol, Cheng-Chi Lee, Shun-Der Chen, Chin-Ling Chen

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Recently, Chen et al. proposed a three-party encrypted key exchange (3PEKE) protocol with password authentication which is called CCLC-3PEKE. The protocol simultaneously possesses round and computation efficiencies. However, the protocol is vulnerable to replaying attacks. Since the protocol is currently one of the most superior of all 3PEKE protocols, it seems valuable to remedy the security weakness and enhance their efficiency. Hence, we shall propose an efficient 3PEKE (L-3PEKE) scheme. Compare with other 3PEKE protocols, our proposed L-3PEKE is more secure and efficient.

A Stochastic Model For Analysis Of Manufacturing Modules, Mehmet Savsar, Majid Aldaihani Sep 2012

A Stochastic Model For Analysis Of Manufacturing Modules, Mehmet Savsar, Majid Aldaihani

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, a stochastic model, which describes the states of a manufacturing system by a set of differential equations, is developed. These equations are changed into a set of difference equations at steady state and then solved by MAPLE software to analyze performance measures of flexible manufacturing modules under different operational conditions. A manufacturing module consists of one or more flexible machines, a loading and unloading robot, and a part transfer pallet. Flexible machines are subject to frequent failures due to their high utilizations. Therefore, models are needed to determine the effects of various factors on system performance as …

Fast Evaluation Of Canonical Oscillatory Integrals, Ying Liu Sep 2012

Fast Evaluation Of Canonical Oscillatory Integrals, Ying Liu

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Fast evaluation of oscillatory integrals is an issue attracts much attention in many fields. In this paper, we are interested in the calculation of canonical oscillatory integrals, and the irregular oscillatory integrals are transformed into canonical ones with respect to the presences of stationary phase points or not. An improved-Levin method is proposed to calculated the canonical oscillatory integral, where the eigen-decomposition is employed to solve the target system of linear equation, and a much higher efficiency is yielded in comparison with the direct solution methods such as the Gaussian elimination.
