Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

We present a search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson produced in association with a Z boson in 9.7 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at root s = 1.96 TeV. Selected events contain one reconstructed Z -> e(+) e(-) or Z -> mu(+) mu(-)candidate and at least two jets, including at least one jet identified as likely to contain a b quark. To validate the search procedure, we also measure the cross section for ZZ production in the same final state. It is found to be consistent …

The Chandra X-Ray Point-Source Catalog In The Deep2 Galaxy Redshift Survey Fields, A. D. Goulding, W. R. Forman, R. C. Hickox, C. Jones

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present the X-ray point-source catalog produced from the Chandra Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS-I) observations of the combined \sim3.2 deg2 DEEP2 (XDEEP2) survey fields, which consist of four ~0.7-1.1 deg2 fields. The combined total exposures across all four XDEEP2 fields range from ~10ks-1.1Ms. We detect X-ray point-sources in both the individual ACIS-I observations and the overlapping regions in the merged (stacked) images. We find a total of 2976 unique X-ray sources within the survey area with an expected false-source contamination of ~30 sources (~1%). We present the combined logN-logS distribution of sources detected across the XDEEP2 survey fields and …

Is Portland Really The Place Where Young People Go To Retire? Migration Patterns Of Portland’S Young And College-Educated, 1980-2010, Jason R. Jurjevich, Greg Schrock

Publications, Reports and Presentations

For many metro areas, including Portland, being economically competitive in today’s knowledge and information economy depends on attracting and retaining young, college-‐educated (YCE) migrants. On this indicator, Portland has been most successful: since 1980, the Portland metropolitan region has attracted college-‐educated individuals under the age of 40 at some of the country’s highest net migration rates in good economic times and bad. Though not unique to Portland, the resiliency of Portland’s migration streams, even in periods of economic uncertainty, calls attention to an increasingly selective group of YCE migrants who appear to place greater relative value on non-‐economic factors—from political …

Is Portland Really The Place Where Young People Go To Retire? Analyzing Labor Market Outcomes For Portland’S Young And College-Educated, Jason R. Jurjevich, Greg Schrock

Publications, Reports and Presentations

Few segments of the population are more critical to Portland’s future economic vitality than the young and college‐educated (YCE). In the last several decades the Portland metropolitan region has become a magnet for YCEs nationally, boasting one of the country’s highest net migration rates for college‐educated individuals under the age of 40, a trend that has continued in good economic times and bad. The infusion of human capital from other regions has undoubtedly been a benefit to Portland, especially given Oregon’s historically low levels of investment in higher education.

However, in recent years there has been growing concern about the …

Technology Growth And Expenditure Growth In Health Care, Amitabh Chandra, Jonathan Skinner Sep 2012

Technology Growth And Expenditure Growth In Health Care, Amitabh Chandra, Jonathan Skinner

Dartmouth Scholarship

In the United States, health care technology has contributed to rising survival rates, yet health care spending relative to GDP has also grown more rapidly than in any other country. We develop a model of patient demand and supplier behavior to explain these parallel trends in technology growth and cost growth. We show that health care productivity depends on the heterogeneity of treatment effects across patients, the shape of the health production function, and the cost structure of procedures such as MRIs with high fixed costs and low marginal costs. The model implies a typology of medical technology productivity: (I) …

Background: Mobile health (mHealth) technologies hold incredible promise to improve healthcare delivery in resourcelimited settings. Network reliability across large catchment areas can be a major challenge. We performed an analysis of network failure frequency as part of a study of real-time adherence monitoring in rural Uganda. We hypothesized that the addition of short messaging service (SMS+GPRS) to the standard cellular network modality (GPRS) would reduce network disruptions and improve transmission of data.

Methods: Participants were enrolled in a study of real-time adherence monitoring in southwest Uganda. In June 2011, we began using Wisepill devices that transmit data each time the …

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Teaching concepts in direct marketing and distribution can be interesting and rewarding. Using a case that highlights advances in direct marketing technology and offers significant customer value can help overcome lack of currency and integration of direct marketing and distribution strategies in the introductory marketing curriculum. The Redbox case provides a contextual background for using direct marketing via kiosks, re-engineering of their functionality and advances in distribution to make the product offer attractive and profitable. Follow up class discussion questions (Teaching Note available from the authors) focus on analyzing growth and efficiency opportunities as well as competitive challenges possible in …

Herpes Simplex Virus 34.5 Interferes With Autophagosome Maturation And Antigen Presentation In Dendritic Cells, Philipe A. M. Gobeil, David A. Leib Sep 2012

Herpes Simplex Virus 34.5 Interferes With Autophagosome Maturation And Antigen Presentation In Dendritic Cells, Philipe A. M. Gobeil, David A. Leib

Dartmouth Scholarship

The cellular autophagy response induced by herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) is countered by the viral γ34.5 protein. γ34.5 modulates autophagy by binding to the host autophagy protein Beclin-1 and through this binding inhibits the formation of autophagosomes in fibroblasts and neurons. In contrast, in this study dendritic cells (DCs) infected with HSV-1 showed an accumulation of autophagosomes and of the long-lived protein p62. No such accumulations were observed in DCs infected with a γ34.5-null virus or a virus lacking the Beclin-binding domain (BBD) of γ34.5. To explore this further, we established stably transduced DC lines to show that γ34.5 …

Evaluating Sustainability On The Cal Poly Campus: Attitudes, Behaviors, Knowledge, Social Norms, And Social Desirability, Rebecca Sokoloski

Psychology and Child Development

Previous research has shown that attitudes and behavior towards sustainability are not correlated. Social factors including norms and desirability have been found to explain these results. One hundred and six students from California Polytechnic State University participated in this study. The survey used was composed of several sections: attitudes, behaviors, knowledge, social norms, social desirability, and a demographic section. Attitudes and behaviors were found to be correlated in this study. Knowledge and behavior towards sustainability was not found to be correlated as expected. Participants’ attitudes were correlated with friends’ and families’ but not professors’ and peers’ attitudes. Participants’ behaviors were …

Studies Of Drought Tolerance Of Hard Red Winter Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Cultivars In Nebraska, Sumardi Bin Abdul Hamid Sep 2012

Studies Of Drought Tolerance Of Hard Red Winter Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Cultivars In Nebraska, Sumardi Bin Abdul Hamid

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In Nebraska, about 75% of the wheat production is in the western half of the state, and about 92% of the winter wheat acreage is in dryland production, where productivity is limited by low and/or uncertain rainfall. We have investigated the effects of water stress on few established winter wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) cultivars, which are known for their superior adaptation to either rainfed or irrigated wheat production systems in western Nebraska. We also began a study to investigate the variation in the root system architecture to confer drought tolerance in winter wheat. The objectives of this study were …

Explorations In Sonoluminescence, Jeremy Peshl Sep 2012

Explorations In Sonoluminescence, Jeremy Peshl

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Single Bubble Sonoluminescence (SBSL) is the phenomena by which a bubble is levitated in a liquid medium and forced to oscillate using sound waves, which can make the bubble collapse violently enough to produce light. Various material parameters affect the light produced by these bubbles. This project provided an alternative methodology for the production of SBSL, as well as for data acquisition. Intensity measurements were obtained using a photomultiplier tube and spectral measurements were obtained using a fiber-optic spectrometer. The study focused on the effects of temperature and different liquid compositions on the intensity of the light produced by a …

Sixteen Strong Identifications Of Biblical Persons (Plus Nine Other Ids) In Authentic Northwest Semitic Inscriptions From Before 539 B.C.E., Lawrence J. Mykytiuk

Libraries Research Publications

This revised conference paper presents the strongest results of the author's published dissertation as corrected and updated in a journal article published in 2010 and as updated using a 2011 essay. In Northwest Semitic inscriptions which are known to be authentic, using sound protocols, one can identify with certainty at least ten persons from before the Persian era who are mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. Another six such persons can be identified with virtual certainty, for a total of sixteen strong identifications (IDs).

Five other authentic inscriptions offer an additional seven IDs which, while not quite certain, are at least …

Blurring The Boundaries Between City And Countryside In Photography, Steven Jacobs Sep 2012

Blurring The Boundaries Between City And Countryside In Photography, Steven Jacobs

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Blurring the Boundaries between City and Countryside in Photography" Steven Jacobs discusses how, in recent decades, a new landscape has emerged in which the differences between city and countryside have been blurred. As a result, the urbanized environment is increasingly viewed and interpreted as a landscape. It is because of the hybridity of this contemporary cityscape that urban planners such as Mirko Zardini have argued for a revaluation of the notion of the picturesque linked with a sensitivity to irregularity and a mixture of the cultural and the natural. Since the late 1960s, the post-urban landscape has …
