Macrophage Extracellular Trap Formation In Response To M. Haemolytica Or Its Leukptoxin Is Altered By Co-Incubation With Bovine Herpes Virus-1 Infected Bronchiolar Epithelial Cells, Craig Olson, Nicole Aulik

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the primary cause of morbidity in the U.S. beef and dairy industry. BRD is a multifactorial disease that is caused by viral and bacterial agents leading to a severe pleuropneumonia in cattle. BRD is characterized by inflammation, intense neutrophil infiltration, consolidation and recently, extensive amounts of extracellular DNA in the lungs. One possible source of the DNA is from leukocytes that release fibrillar networks of antimicrobial protein-studded DNA matrices referred to as extracellular traps (ETs). Recently, we have demonstrated that neutrophils and macrophages produce ETs in response to Mannheimia haemolytica, an important member of the …

Colonization Of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus In Dormitory Versus Non-Dormitory Populations, Kendra Rohrer, Danielle Schneider, Nicole Aulik

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterium that has developed resistance to numerous antibiotics such as methicillin, a commonly used antibiotic for the treatment of Staphylococcus infections. In the community, MRSA is widespread, and it is believed that 1% of the population is a carrier. People are potentially at a greater risk in areas where factors such as close skin-to-skin contact occur, cuts or abrasions in the skin occur, contaminated items and surfaces are present, or where overcrowded living conditions and poor hygiene are common. MRSA’s occurrence in people without risk factors who live in communities is also increasing, and …

Biphasic Ligand Exchanges On Lead Sulfide Nanoparticles, Jocelyn Schaffer, Jennifer Zemke Sep 2012

Biphasic Ligand Exchanges On Lead Sulfide Nanoparticles, Jocelyn Schaffer, Jennifer Zemke

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

Lead sulfide (PbS) nanoparticles are currently being investigated as potential candidates for increasing the efficiency of polymeric solar cells. The current, most popular synthesis of PbS nanoparticles ultimately gives a product capped by oleic acid, however the oleic acid is not an ideal ligand for use in solar cell applications due to its length and insulating nature. Therefore, we employ the use of biphasic ligand exchange reactions on the PbS nanoparticles to afford surface-modified nanoparticles. The first biphasic reaction produces the water-soluble 3-mercaptopropane sulfonate (MPS) nanoparticles, and the second biphasic reaction gives a variety of shorter, thiol-capped nanoparticles that are …

Using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography With Fluorescence To Determine The Effectiveness Of Wastewater Treatment Plants In The Removal Of Natural And Synthetic Estrogens, Katie Seehusen, Jeanne Franz

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

The presence of hormones in the environment is becoming an increasingly popular topic in environmental and analytical chemistry. This research aims to develop a method to quantify the amount of two types of hormones in wastewater treatment plant effluents. The two hormones analyzed are 17β-estradiol (E2), a naturally produced hormone, and 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), a synthetic hormone commonly found in oral contraceptives. It has been hypothesized that synthetic hormones are significantly harder for wastewater treatment plants to remove, and the final goal of this research is to be able to test samples to determine the effectiveness of the wastewater treatment plants. …

Translational Repression Mediated By The Genotoxic Agent Chromium (Vi) Results In P-Body Formation In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Sara Segner, Chris Bullard, Blaine Rathmann, Tony Koch

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

Mechanisms to cope with oxidative stress are conserved across eukaryotes. For instance, exposure to oxidation can result in lipid and nucleic acid damage and elicit a stress response. The genotoxic agent, sodium dichromate oxidizes guanines resulting in OxoG bases, induces double strand breaks, or generates abasic sites. Therefore, an oxidative stress response is crucial to maintain proper cellular function. In response to stress, cells control gene expression by repressing translation. Repressed mRNA may localize to P-bodies or stress granules; cytoplasmic structures where non-translating mRNA are found. While P-bodies contain mRNA degradation factors, stress granules contain translation initiation factors, allowing for …

Analysis Of Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring Test Accelerator's Double Slit Visual Beam Size Monitor, Robert Campbell Sep 2012

Analysis Of Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring Test Accelerator's Double Slit Visual Beam Size Monitor, Robert Campbell

Physics

In the past year, a double slit interferometer was installed to measure the horizontal beam size in the Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring Test Accelerator (CesrTA) at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. To better understand the systematics of this device, a replica of the CesrTA instrument was assembled at California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo. From the prototype, it was found that the device will produce a calculated beam size that agrees with measurements as long as it is optimized with the proper double slits for a small range of beam sizes.

Jury Service: The Verdict An Exploratory Study Of Public Attitudes To Jury Service, Brid Dempsey

Dissertations

Jury service is seen as an integral institution within the Irish criminal justice system, and is dependent on public participation, as such, it should follow that research into public opinion of this institution is vital. The current research explores the public’s attitude to jury service in Ireland. Specifically, the study concentrates on the public’s support for jury service, their knowledge of jury service and their willingness to participate in jury service. Past experiences of jurors are also explored. The study was conducted through quantitative research utilising availability sampling through 74 on-line surveys. The on-line sample was sourced through the use …

The Regulation Of Private Police, Stephen Rushin Sep 2012

The Regulation Of Private Police, Stephen Rushin

West Virginia Law Review

Private police assume many of the same roles as traditional law enforcement. But courts and legislatures regulate public and private police very differently. This Article evaluates the statutory and judicial regulation of private police. By collecting and coding all state statutes related to the regulation of private police, I theorize on the inadequacies of the current regulatory scheme. I show that most state statutes only regulate a certain category of private police officers, leaving a substantial portion of the private policing industry virtually unregulated. Many state regulations of private police misunderstand, and thus inadequately protect against the threat posed by …

Confronting The Invisible Witness: The Use Of Narrative To Neutralize Capital Jurors' Implicit Racial Biases, Pamela A. Wilkins Sep 2012

Confronting The Invisible Witness: The Use Of Narrative To Neutralize Capital Jurors' Implicit Racial Biases, Pamela A. Wilkins

West Virginia Law Review

How can capital defense lawyers craft narratives that neutralize jurors' unconscious racial and ethnic biases? A well-developed body of research in cognitive psychology indicates that despite even the best of intentions and the absence of conscious prejudice, most Americans harbor unconscious biases against African Americans. These biases influence what we actually perceive, how we interpret what we perceive, and how we act. For reasons related to the content and structure of capital sentencing trials, these unconscious biases are particularly likely to influence capital jurors. In effect, unconscious racial bias acts as an invisible witness against the African American defendant, buttressing …

Reverse Mathematics And Properties Of Finite Character, Damir D. Dzhafarov, Carl Mummert Sep 2012

Reverse Mathematics And Properties Of Finite Character, Damir D. Dzhafarov, Carl Mummert

Mathematics Faculty Research

We study the reverse mathematics of the principle stating that, for every property of finite character, every set has a maximal subset satisfying the property. In the context of set theory, this variant of Tukey’s lemma is equivalent to the axiom of choice. We study its behavior in the context of second-order arithmetic, where it applies to sets of natural numbers only, and give a full characterization of its strength in terms of the quantifier structure of the formula defining the property. We then study the interaction between properties of finite character and finitary closure operators, and the interaction between these …

Closing The Regulatory Gap In Michigan's Public Trust Doctrine: Saving Michigan Millions With Statutory Reform, Kelsey Breck Sep 2012

Closing The Regulatory Gap In Michigan's Public Trust Doctrine: Saving Michigan Millions With Statutory Reform, Kelsey Breck

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The Great Lakes are some of Michigan's most valuable and important environmental resources. The public trust doctrine requires Michigan to protect and preserve the lands along the shores of the Great Lakes for the use of future generations. Unfortunately, the public trust doctrine in Michigan is in disarray and as a result, public and private rights to the lands along the Great Lakes are poorly delineated. This Note presents an economic argument for why the public trust doctrine should be reformed to better define public and private rights to the land along Michigan's Great Lakes. It also suggests a statutory …
