Child Sacrifice In Egyptian Monastic Culture: From Familial Renunciation To Jephthah's Lost Daughter, Caroline T. Schroeder Sep 2012

Child Sacrifice In Egyptian Monastic Culture: From Familial Renunciation To Jephthah's Lost Daughter, Caroline T. Schroeder

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

The Apophthegmata Patrum tells the story of a man who, wishing to join a monastery, reenacts Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac by proceeding to throw his son in the Nile River on the command of the monastic father. Like Isaac, the boy is spared. This account of extreme familial renunciation in the service of the ascetic life is not the only account of a child killing or attempted killing in monastic literature. Nor does the biblical prefigurement of ascetic renunciation exhaust these narratives' significance. This essay examines accounts of child killings in Egyptian monastic culture through the lens of various textual …

Delegation In Immigration Law, Adam B. Cox, Eric A. Posner Sep 2012

Delegation In Immigration Law, Adam B. Cox, Eric A. Posner

University of Chicago Law Review

Immigration law both screens migrants and regulates the behavior of migrants after they have arrived. Both activities are information intensive because the migrant's "type" and the migrant's post-arrival activity are often forms of private information that are not immediately accessible to government agents. To overcome this information problem, the national government can delegate the screening and regulating functions. American immigration law, for example, delegates extensive authority to both private entities— paradigmatically, employers and families—and to the fifty states. From the government's perspective, delegation carries with it benefits and costs. On the benefit side, agents frequently have easy access to information …

Baron Guillaume Dupuytren: When Brilliance Combats Professionalism., Sean M. Devitt, Md, Charles J. Yeo, Md, Pinckney J. Maxwell, Iv, Md

Department of Surgery Gibbon Society Historical Profiles

Baron Guilluame Dupuytren was a French anatomist and surgeon who practiced during the 1800s and is considered by some to be the most brilliant and gifted surgeons of his time. His contributions to the field of surgery are quite extensive, yet his eccentric personality and attitude toward his colleagues, students, and patients raises a very interesting question: could Dr. Dupuytren (Fig. 1) and his many contributions to the field of surgery have thrived in today’s era of professionalism? The concept of professionalism is emphasized to medical students starting from day one of their medical training. How would Dr. Dupuytren, an …

Urinary Stone Disease: Great Progress With Promise For The Future., Demetrius H. Bagley Sep 2012

Urinary Stone Disease: Great Progress With Promise For The Future., Demetrius H. Bagley

Department of Urology Faculty Papers

Urinary calculus disease has been a scourge on mankind since ancient times. Research in the field has been hampered by lack of funds and the lack of cachet with the public such as seen with cancer or heart disease. In recent years there have been marked changes led by urologists in the diagnosis, treatment and long-term management of calculi.

Ureteroscopic Treatment Of Larger Renal Calculi (>2 Cm)., Demetrius H. Bagley, Kelly A. Healy, Nir Kleinmann

Department of Urology Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the current status of ureteroscopic lithotripsy (UL) for treating renal calculi of >2 cm, as advances in flexible ureteroscope design, accessory instrumentation and lithotrites have revolutionised the treatment of urinary calculi. While previously reserved for ureteric and small renal calculi, UL has gained an increasing role in the selective management of larger renal stone burdens.

METHODS: We searched the available databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus, for relevant reports in English, and the article bibliographies to identify additional relevant articles. Keywords included ureteroscopy, lithotripsy, renal calculi, and calculi >2 cm. Retrieved articles were reviewed to consider …

Searching For A Needle In A Haystack: Indications Of Social Justice Among Aspiring Leaders, Vonzell Agosto, Zorka Karanxha Sep 2012

Searching For A Needle In A Haystack: Indications Of Social Justice Among Aspiring Leaders, Vonzell Agosto, Zorka Karanxha

Educational and Psychological Studies Faculty Publications

We conducted a content analysis of 34 statements of interest submitted by applicants applying to an education leadership preparation program. The purpose of the analysis was to understand the applicants’ orientations toward social justice. Using Kumashiro’s (2000) and Apple’s discussions of anti-oppressive education, we identified three practices in the candidates’ treatment of the writing prompt concerning leadership related to Othering: ignoring, marginalizing, and mentioning. The fourth practice, embodying (evidencing through practice) a social justice orientation, was a practice we identified in statements submitted by a few applicants (n=7). This article centers on the analysis of the applications of these seven …

Accessing The Past As Landscape: The Danish Bog Bodies And Modern Memory, Jillian Price Sep 2012

Accessing The Past As Landscape: The Danish Bog Bodies And Modern Memory, Jillian Price

Spectrum

This article will investigate variations on place-making involving the museum presentation of the well-preserved bodies of Danish bog sites. While any museum site holds the potential for such a critical analysis, bog bodies have a unique role in the narrative nature of place-making: they are individuals who experienced the story being told (assuming, of course, that the story is “true”). They are, in essence, characters in the created story of the “place-world.” Well-preserved bodies are fully recognizable as humans, with recognizably human faces and, sometimes, discernible facial hair. They seem almost ready to tell the story of the past themselves. …

The Geoglyphs Of The Atacama Desert: A Bond Of Landscape And Mobility, Marika Labash Sep 2012

The Geoglyphs Of The Atacama Desert: A Bond Of Landscape And Mobility, Marika Labash

Spectrum

In the northern-most area of Chile, stretching six hundred miles down the coast of South America and expanding more than forty thousand square miles into Bolivia, Peru and Argentina lies the Atacama Desert. This massive, barren landscape consists of expansive salt flats, out of which towering volcanoes extend, reaching twenty thousand feet into the sky. The Atacama Desert is known to be the driest desert in the world, with a landscape resembling that of Mars (Vesilind 2003). Despite this extreme and often harsh environment, the Atacama Desert has been home to a diverse population since as early as 10,000 B.P.. …

Olympic Landscapes: A Global Event On A Local Landscape, Krista Silva

Spectrum

Recently, cities around the globe have become involved in a competition for obtaining the title of the most “powerful” city in the world. Hosting mega-events, like the Olympics allow for these cities to restructure the entire floor plan of their metropolis. The Olympic games are well-known global events that occur within a smaller scale local landscape; therefore, the landscape undergoes many changes due to the drastic measures the games entail, as well as the goals for the landscape, economy, and residents post-Olympics.

While looking at these landscapes, it is important to remember that the individual shapes the landscape, while the …

Manifestations Of Ideational Landscapes: Heaven, Hell And Film, Hillary Christopher

Spectrum

There is a place where you walk upon the clouds. Before entering, you must go through a golden gate of sorts. Once passed, all of your loved ones smile and greet you. There might be a flock of doves flying someplace in the distance. Somewhere else is another place constructed not of clouds, but of jagged rocks. This place is dark and full of fire. You feel alone, full of dread and fear.

These two places should be familiar despite a simple description. Hopefully you identified them as Heaven and Hell, respectively. They are classified as one of the three …

Approaches To Sensory Landscape Archaeology, Jessica Faycurry Sep 2012

Approaches To Sensory Landscape Archaeology, Jessica Faycurry

Spectrum

As the medium through which humans interact with the physical world, senses are crucial to explore when trying to understand the beings that embody them. Senses are the middlemen through which humans register their surroundings, perform activities crucial for survival, and interact with the world and it’s inhabitants. The phenomenon of senses, although shared among all humans, can be very personal and informative of individual life histories. The scent of cinnamon, for example, can evoke memories of childhood for some, while for others there is no connection. Senses are physically natured but culturally constructed. Colors, tastes, and sounds can hold …

Epidemiological Ins And Outs Of Helicobacter Pylori: A Review, Jibran Sualeh Muhammad, Syed Faisal Zaidi, Toshiro Sugiyama

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Helicobacter pylori infection is now recognised as a worldwide problem. It is the most common cause of chronic gastritis, and is strongly linked to peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. A comprehensive understanding of epidemiological ins and outs of H. pylori infection is very important in solving the patho-physiological enigma and might help in leading towards better management and prognosis of infection. This article presents a review of the literature on the epidemiology of H. pylori infection from 2006 to 2011. The authors used Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms 'Helicobacter' with 'epidemiology,' 'transmission' or 'risk factor' to search PubMed database. …
