Performance Effects Of Damage Arrestment Devices On Sandwich Composite Beams Under Monotonic Loading, Yvette Vanessa Wood Sep 2012

Performance Effects Of Damage Arrestment Devices On Sandwich Composite Beams Under Monotonic Loading, Yvette Vanessa Wood

Aerospace Engineering

Face-core delamination has become a subject matter in the Aerospace industry, as it can lead to early failure. In this study, sandwich composite beams are tested initially with no delamination to obtain the ultimate strength. A second case of delamination in the center of the beam in initialized to verify a decrease in ultimate strength. This experiment investigates the performance effects of the addition of Damage Arrestment Devices (DADs), in composite sandwich beams. The performance criterion is measured by strength in flexural loading test. The objective of this project is to verify an increase in the strength and performance with …

Gene Transcripts Encoding Hypoxia-Inducible Factor (Hif) Exhibit Tissue- And Muscle Fiber Type-Dependent Responses To Hypoxia And Hypercapnic Hypoxia In The Atlantic Blue Crab, Callinectes Sapidus, Kristin M. Hardy, Chandler R. Follett, Louis E. Burnett, Sean Lema

Biological Sciences

Hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) is a transcription factor that under low environmental oxygen regulates the expression of suites of genes involved in metabolism, angiogenesis, erythropoiesis, immune function, and growth. Here, we isolated and sequenced partial cDNAs encoding hif-α and arnt/hif-β from the Atlantic blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, an estuarine species that frequently encounters concurrent hypoxia (low O2) and hypercapnia (elevated CO2). We then examined the effects of acute exposure (1 h) to hypoxia (H) and hypercapnic hypoxia (HH) on relative transcript abundance for hif-α and arnt/hif-β in …

Investigation Of The Importance Of Rock Chemistry For Saxicolous Lichen Communities Of The New Idria Serpentinite Mass, San Benito County, California, Usa, Nishanta Rajakaruna, Kerry Knudsen, Alan M. Fryday, Ryan E. O'Dell, Nathaniel S. Pope, Fred C. Olday, Suzie Woolhouse Sep 2012

Investigation Of The Importance Of Rock Chemistry For Saxicolous Lichen Communities Of The New Idria Serpentinite Mass, San Benito County, California, Usa, Nishanta Rajakaruna, Kerry Knudsen, Alan M. Fryday, Ryan E. O'Dell, Nathaniel S. Pope, Fred C. Olday, Suzie Woolhouse

Biological Sciences

Although several lichen inventories exist for European ultramafic sites, only four surveys of serpentine lichens for North America have been published to date. Of those, only one has been conducted in California. We conducted a survey of saxicolous lichens from ultramafic rocks (including nephrite, partially serpentinized peridotite, and serpentinite) and non-ultramafic rocks (including silica-carbonate, shale, and sandstone) at the New Idria serpentinite mass, San Benito County, California. X-ray Fluorescence Analysis of the rocks from which the lichens were collected revealed significant elemental differences between the ultramafic and non-ultramafic rocks for 26 of the 32 major and trace elements analyzed. We …

A Tale Of Two Haplotypes: The Eda2r/Ar Intergenic Region Is The Most Divergent Genomic Segment Between Africans And East Asians In The Human Genome, Amanda M. Casto, Brenna M. Henn, Jeffery M. Kidd, Carlos D. Bustamante, Marcus W. Feldman Sep 2012

A Tale Of Two Haplotypes: The Eda2r/Ar Intergenic Region Is The Most Divergent Genomic Segment Between Africans And East Asians In The Human Genome, Amanda M. Casto, Brenna M. Henn, Jeffery M. Kidd, Carlos D. Bustamante, Marcus W. Feldman

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with large allele frequency differences between human populations are relatively rare. The longest run of SNPs with an allele frequency difference of one between the Yoruba of Nigeria and the Han Chinese is found on the long arm of the X chromosome in the intergenic region separating the EDA2R and AR genes. It has been proposed that the unusual allele frequency distributions of these SNPs are the result of a selective sweep affecting African populations that occurred after the Out-of-Africa migration. To investigate the evolutionary history of the EDA2R/AR intergenic region, we characterized the haplotype structure …

Assessing The Infrastructure Impact Of Mega-Events In Emerging Economies, Victor Matheson Sep 2012

Assessing The Infrastructure Impact Of Mega-Events In Emerging Economies, Victor Matheson

Economics Department Working Papers

Developing countries that host mega-events such as the Olympic Games and World Cup invest enormous sums in stadiums and collateral infrastructure projects. The rapid investment in long-lasting physical stocks raises questions of equity and efficiency for national taxpayers and event attendees. This paper reviews several cases of historical and recent mega-events to assess the infrastructure costs, returns on infrastructure investments, and impacts of the events on urban development patterns. It will highlight cases where mega-event investments contributed to long-term economic growth.

An Examination Of Exposure To Traumatic Events And Symptoms And Strengths For Children Served In A Behavioral Health System Of Care, Melissa L. Whitson, Christian M. Connell, Stanley N. Bernard, Joy S. Kaufman

Psychology Faculty Publications

The present study examined how exposure to traumatic events impacts children with severe emotional disturbance who are being served in a school-based system of care. Multilevel growth curve models were used to examine the relationships between a child’s history of traumatic events (physical abuse, sexual abuse, or domestic violence) and behavioral and emotional strengths, internalizing problem behaviors, or externalizing problem behaviors over 18 months. Results indicate that children receiving services (N = 134) exhibited increased emotional and behavioral strengths and decreased internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors from enrollment to 18 months follow-up. Children with a history of traumatic events improved …

Effects Of Thiophene Units On Substituted Benzothiadiazole And Benzodithiophene Copolymers For Photovoltaic Applications, Ping Ding, Yingping Zou, Cheng-Che Chu, Dequan Xiao, Chain-Shu Hsu

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

Two conjugated copolymers, P1 and P2, comprising of benzodithiophene and 5, 6-dioctyloxy-benzothiadiazole (DOBT) derivatives with/without thiophene unit, were synthesized via Stille cross-coupling polymerization reaction. These copolymers are promising for the applications in BHJ solar cells due to their good solubilities, proper thermal stability and moderate hole mobility as well as low bandgap. The photovoltaic properties of the copolymers were investigated based on the blend of the different polymer/PC71BM weight ratio under AM1.5G illumination, 100 mW/cm2. The device with ITO/PEDOT:PSS/P2: PC71BM (1:2, w/w)/Ca/Al gave relatively better photovoltaic performance, with a power conversion efficiency of 1.55%.

Applying Positive Leadership Principles To An Investigation Of Organizational Stress In Military Units And The Benefits Associated With Providing Leaders With Emotional Intelligence Social Awareness, Darcy L. Lilley

Dissertations

This interpretive inquiry investigated, using a mixed method approach, organizational stress levels in military units and outcomes associated with heightening leaders’ emotional intelligence social awareness in a positive leadership framework. The researcher designed an understandable, easily implemented leadership tool to guide skill building with actions a leader should take to implement positive leadership principles and display high emotional intelligence skills. This tool can be used for self-development, hiring for leadership positions, leaders’ performance evaluations, and leadership development training. A Military Organizational Stress Reduction Pilot Project involving five military police units from around the U.S. served as the study’s basis. The …

Quality Induction: The Effects Of Comprehensive Induction On New Teacher Retention And Job Satisfaction, Mary Therese Hendricks-Harris Sep 2012

Quality Induction: The Effects Of Comprehensive Induction On New Teacher Retention And Job Satisfaction, Mary Therese Hendricks-Harris

Dissertations

This investigation examined the effect of a comprehensive new teacher induction program on teacher retention and job satisfaction in one suburban school district. New teachers are retained at low rates, and districts are spending resources in an attempt to decrease this number. New teacher induction includes supports for new teachers in their first years that may include orientation, professional development, and formal mentoring, and often has retention as a goal. The researcher collected retention data and compared it to the different induction components provided in various years throughout the study. In addition, six retained teachers were interviewed in order to …

Reinterpreting Bateman Gradients: Multiple Mating And Selection In Both Sexes Of A Songbird Species, N.M. Gerlach, J.W Mcglothlin, P.G Parker, E.D Ketterson Sep 2012

Reinterpreting Bateman Gradients: Multiple Mating And Selection In Both Sexes Of A Songbird Species, N.M. Gerlach, J.W Mcglothlin, P.G Parker, E.D Ketterson

Biology Department Faculty Works

Bateman’s principle, which states that male reproductive success should increase with multiple mating, whereas female reproductive success should not, has long been used to explain sex differences in behavior. The statistical relationship between mating success and reproductive success, or Bateman gradient, has been proposed as a way to quantify sex differences in sexual selection. We used a long-term data set on the distribution of paternity in the socially monogamous dark-eyed junco to examine the effect of multiple mating on lifetime reproductive success and to determine the relative contributions of within-pair and extra-pair mating. Both sexes exhibited a strong positive Bateman …

An Assessment Of Equivalence Between Internet And Paper-Based Surveys: Evidence From Collectivistic Cultures, Jiaming Fang, Chao Wen, Victor R. Prybutok

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Little research exists that addresses the equivalence in collectivistic cultures of paper- versus Internet-based surveys. This study addressed this gap and examined the measurement equivalence of individual innovativeness scales between Internet surveys and paper-based surveys within a collectivistic culture (with China serving as our example). The study analyzed and compared survey data from both paper and web-based surveys using confirmatory factor analysis. The assessment of invariance included the levels of configural, metric, scalar, and covariance invariance. The means and variance of latent variables were also compared. The results show that measurements are invariant at the two levels (configural and metric), …

Mapping Shallow Water Habitats Of The Wallabi Group, Houtman Abrolhos Islands, Using Remote Sensing Techniques, Scott N. Evans, Lynda M. Bellchambers, K Murray

Fisheries Research Reports

The use of mapping techniques to identify and quantify habitats is becoming an increasingly important tool for the effective management of marine resources. With a multitude of techniques such as remote sensing, acoustic surveys and towed video all commonly used, the decision on the methodology to use depends on the resolution of output data required to answer the objectives of the survey, the spatial extent and location of survey site as well as the associated costs of surveying
