Phylotranscriptomics To Bring The Understudied Into The Fold: Monophyletic Ostracoda, Fossil Placement, And Pancrustacean Phylogeny, Todd H. Oakley, Joanna M. Wolfe, Annie R. Lindgren, Alexander K. Zaharoff
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
An ambitious, yet fundamental goal for comparative biology is to understand the evolutionary relationships for all of life. However, many important taxonomic groups have remained recalcitrant to inclusion into broader scale studies. Here, we focus on collection of 9 new 454 transcriptome data sets from Ostracoda, an ancient and diverse group with a dense fossil record, which is often undersampled in broader studies. We combine the new transcriptomes with a new morphological matrix (including fossils) and existing expressed sequence tag, mitochondrial genome, nuclear genome, and ribosomal DNA data. Our analyses lead to new insights into ostracod and pancrustacean phylogeny. We …
Measurement Of Recovery For Persons With Serious Mental Illness, Linda E. Jensen
Measurement Of Recovery For Persons With Serious Mental Illness, Linda E. Jensen
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
The concept of recovery may seem unusual for people with severe and persistent mental illnesses (SPMI) as over 2/3 are unemployed, and it is estimated that in the U.S., 240,000 are homeless, and 283,000 are incarcerated (NAMI, 2011). Recovery has been typically defined as a complete remission of symptoms or a return to a life as it was before the illness however, people with SPMI are advocating for a change in the understanding and measurement of recovery to include progress made in coping and living with mental illness, and not always a complete cure. Several evidence based studies of people …
Sensitivity Of Radiofrequency Devices For Detection Of Retained Surgical Sponges In Morbidly Obese Subjects, Victoria M. Steelman
Sensitivity Of Radiofrequency Devices For Detection Of Retained Surgical Sponges In Morbidly Obese Subjects, Victoria M. Steelman
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the detection of surgical sponges through the torso of non-morbidly obese and morbidly obese subjects using a radiofrequency mattress. Methods: A prospective, crossover, and observer blinded study design was used. Subjects served as their own controls. With the subject supine, 4 surgical sponges were sequentially placed on top of the subject's torso in locations approximating abdominal quadrants. In a subset of 118 subjects, the effectiveness of the RF mattress was compared to that of the RF wand. Results: 203 subjects were enrolled in the study, 61.1 …
Safe Practice Environments: Nurses' Perceptions Of Stressors And Solutions, Peggy A. Landrum
Safe Practice Environments: Nurses' Perceptions Of Stressors And Solutions, Peggy A. Landrum
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Nursing units include teams working to provide safe patient care. Without true partnerships, care is compromised due to decreased quality in communication and teamwork. Stressors impact the nursing practice environment and compromise safe practice. Identification of skills and behaviors that facilitate effective teamwork and foster safe practice environments will be enhanced by determining those stressors. Research questions are: a. What are nurses' perceptions of stressors that affect nursing practice on an intensive care unit? b. What are nurses' perceptions of behaviors that facilitate safety in the nursing practice environment of an intensive care unit? Methods: Setting for this qualitative …

Selecting Nurse Preceptors: What Qualities And Characteristics Should Be Considered?, E. Ann Mohide, Olivia Geradrdi, Dianne Norman, Vanessa Cavalieri, Colleen A. Mckey, Barbara Jennings, Noori Akhtar-Danesh, Wendy Seidlitz
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: To help stakeholders improve the selection process of nurse preceptors for senior baccalaureate nursing students, they were asked to rate the importance of preceptor qualities/characteristics.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a large tertiary hospital and at an affiliated university nursing school in an urban Canadian city. Subjects (n=166) included hospital Registered Nurses (RNs) (with or without preceptor experience), educators, and administrators, as well as university faculty and students. In the instrument development phase of a larger preceptor selection study, representatives of the stakeholder groups were asked to identify preceptor issues. From a content analysis of the written …

The Critical Coupling Likelihood Method: A New Approach For Seamless Integration Of Environmental And Operating Conditions Of Gravitational Wave Detectors Into Gravitational Wave Searches, Cesar A. Costa, Cristina V. Torres
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
Any search effort for gravitational waves (GWs) using interferometric detectors like LIGO needs to be able to identify if and when noise couples into the detector’s output signal. The critical coupling likelihood (CCL) method has been developed to characterize potential noise coupling and in the future aid GW search efforts. By testing two hypotheses about pairs of channels, CCL is able to identify undesirable coupled instrumental noise from potential GW candidates. Our preliminary results show that CCL can associate up to ∼80% of observed artifacts with SNR ⩾ 8 with local noise sources, while reducing the duty cycle of the …

Gone In 0.6 Seconds: The Encoding Of Motor Memories Depends On Recent Sensorimotor States., Ian S. Howard, James N. Ingram, David W. Franklin, Daniel M. Wolpert
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Real-world tasks often require movements that depend on a previous action or on changes in the state of the world. Here we investigate whether motor memories encode the current action in a manner that depends on previous sensorimotor states. Human subjects performed trials in which they made movements in a randomly selected clockwise or counterclockwise velocity-dependent curl force field. Movements during this adaptation phase were preceded by a contextual phase that determined which of the two fields would be experienced on any given trial. As expected from previous research, when static visual cues were presented in the contextual phase, strong …
