Fabrication Of Zno Nanorod-Based Hydrogen Gas Nanosensor, Lee Chow, Guangyu Chia, Oleg Lupan Sep 2012

Fabrication Of Zno Nanorod-Based Hydrogen Gas Nanosensor, Lee Chow, Guangyu Chia, Oleg Lupan

UCF Patents

The nanofabrication of a hydrogen nanosensor from single ZnO branched nanorods using in-situ lift-out technique, performed in the chamber of a focused ion beam (FIB) system is disclosed. A self-assembled ZnO branched nanorod has been grown by a cost-effective and fast synthesis route using an aqueous solution deposition method and rapid thermal processing. The properties of the ZnO nanorod structures were analyzed by X-ray difhction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy. High quality ZnO nanorods were obtained with a 90% success rate for building nanodevices. The fabricated nanosensor can gauge 150 ppm hydrogen …

The Density Of States In Gauge Theories, K Langfeld, B Lucini, A Rago Sep 2012

The Density Of States In Gauge Theories, K Langfeld, B Lucini, A Rago

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The density of states is calculated for a SU(2) and a compact U(1) lattice gauge theory using a modified version of the Wang-Landau algorithm. We find that the density of states of the SU(2) gauge theory can be reliably calculated over a range of 120,000 orders of magnitude for lattice sizes as big as 20^4. We demonstrate the potential of the algorithm by reproducing the SU(2) average action, its specific heat and the critical couplings of the weak first order transition in U(1).

The Role Of School Psychologists Regarding The Implementation Of The Anti-Bullying Bill Of Rights Act, John Kowalcyk Sep 2012

The Role Of School Psychologists Regarding The Implementation Of The Anti-Bullying Bill Of Rights Act, John Kowalcyk

Theses and Dissertations

Current school psychologists in New Jersey were contacted in order to determine the attitudes, roles, and approaches of different school psychologists in relation to the new HIB (Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying) legislation for all New Jersey Public Schools. This study gauged school psychologists' level of involvement in implementing the new legislation and their overall roles with regard to maintaining a safe and positive school climate. The survey, which was sent via email to school psychologists across the state, asked questions about their perceived roles in schools, the time they spent on various obligations during the workday, their involvement with the …

Existing Regulation Of Exempt Wells In The United States, Jesse J. Richardson Sep 2012

Existing Regulation Of Exempt Wells In The United States, Jesse J. Richardson

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Exempt domestic water well provisions exist in sixteen states and allow landowners to use water wells producing relatively small amounts of water or water wells used for domestic or other specific purposes to avoid certain regulatory requirements. Exempt wells provisions apply mainly in the west, where most states use the prior appropriation rule ("first in time, first in right") for ground water rights. Critics voice concerns over implications ranging from land use planning to water supply. This article explores existing state regulation and finds that the term "exempt well" is a misnomer. The vast majority of states impose numerous restrictions …

Conflicts Associated With Exempt Wells: A Spaghetti Western Water War, Megan A. Vinett, Todd Jarvis Sep 2012

Conflicts Associated With Exempt Wells: A Spaghetti Western Water War, Megan A. Vinett, Todd Jarvis

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

The saga over exempt wells in the western United States and Canada epitomizes a new type of water conflict – a spaghetti-western water war. The political melodrama stars local governments to serve as sheriff of water-supply planning duties. Exempt wells number in the millions, and herding the growing numbers is testing the mettle of the states and provinces responsible for the management, allocation, and protection of natural resources. The separation of laws governing ground water and surface water, coupled with changes in geography and geology within a jurisdiction, compound the administrative riddle and give rise to a broad spectrum of …

The Implications Of Bounds V. State Of New Mexico, Jesse J. Richardson, Tiffany Dowell Sep 2012

The Implications Of Bounds V. State Of New Mexico, Jesse J. Richardson, Tiffany Dowell

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

National attention has turned to a case currently pending before the New Mexico Supreme Court. Bounds v. State of New Mexico involves a facial constitutional challenge to New Mexico's domestic well statute. The Plaintiff, Horace Bounds, claims that the statute, which requires the State Engineer to issue permits to any applicants for domestic purposes, violates the constitutional provision known as the Prior Appropriation Doctrine. The decision of the Court will likely have impacts across the country and beyond the legal realm. This decision could impact the well drilling industry, economic development, and administrative agencies. Numerous other western states have similar …

Mitigating For Growth: A Blueprint For A Ground Water Exchange Pilot Program In Montana, Laura Ziemer, Sarah Bates, Meg Casey, Ada Montague Sep 2012

Mitigating For Growth: A Blueprint For A Ground Water Exchange Pilot Program In Montana, Laura Ziemer, Sarah Bates, Meg Casey, Ada Montague

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Over the last decade, Montana's fastest growing basins have experienced a surge of reliance on a certain “permit-exempt well loophole,” which enables small ground water diversions to avoid having to go through the regulatory process that determines whether the proposed use would adversely impact senior water users and ground water supply. This loophole has generated significant conflict with senior right owners in areas where exempt wells have provided water for large-scale residential developments. As a partial solution, this article examines ground water mitigation exchanges designed to address similar issues in Washington and presents the 63rd Montana Legislature with recommendations for …

Arabidopsis Bhlh100 And Bhlh101 Control Iron Homeostasis Via A Fit-Independent Pathway, Alicia B. Sivitz, Victor Hermand, Catherine Curie, Grégory Vert

Dartmouth Scholarship

Iron deficiency induces a complex set of responses in plants, including developmental and physiological changes, to increase iron uptake from soil. In Arabidopsis, many transporters involved in the absorption and distribution of iron have been identified over the past decade. However, little is known about the signaling pathways and networks driving the various responses to low iron. Only the basic helix–loop–helix (bHLH) transcription factor FIT has been shown to control the expression of the root iron uptake machinery genes FRO2 and IRT1. Here, we characterize the biological role of two other iron-regulated transcription factors, bHLH100 and bHLH101, in iron homeostasis. …

Time-Dependent Statistical And Correlation Properties Of Neural Signals During Handwriting, Valery I. Rupasov, Mikhail A. Lebedev, Joseph S. Erlichman, Stephen L. Lee, James C. Leiter, Michael Linderman Sep 2012

Time-Dependent Statistical And Correlation Properties Of Neural Signals During Handwriting, Valery I. Rupasov, Mikhail A. Lebedev, Joseph S. Erlichman, Stephen L. Lee, James C. Leiter, Michael Linderman

Dartmouth Scholarship

To elucidate the cortical control of handwriting, we examined time-dependent statistical and correlational properties of simultaneously recorded 64-channel electroencephalograms (EEGs) and electromyograms (EMGs) of intrinsic hand muscles. We introduced a statistical method, which offered advantages compared to conventional coherence methods. In contrast to coherence methods, which operate in the frequency domain, our method enabled us to study the functional association between different neural regions in the time domain. In our experiments, subjects performed about 400 stereotypical trials during which they wrote a single character. These trials provided time-dependent EMG and EEG data capturing different handwriting epochs. The set of trials …
