Active Teaching, Active Learning: Are Today's Students Engaged In Learning?, Indra Hershorin

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Todays students are different from the past and nursing faculty find themselves struggling to convey enormous amounts of information to students whose horizon of learning has changed. Prensky (2001) claims that students' today are "native speakers" of the digital language. This generation of learners is growing-up in a digital world surrounded by computers, video games, the Internet, smart phones, MP3 players, computer tablets, and e-book readers. According to Jackson and Crawford (2008) to-days learners are cognitively impacted by digital experiences requiring educators to revisit and ultimately expand the horizon of delivery methods. A review of the state of the science …

Long-Term Effect Of The Self-Management, Comprehensive Coping Strategy Program On Quality Of Life In Patients With Advanced Breast Cancer Treated With High Dose Chemotherapy, Fannie Gaston-Johansson Sep 2012

Long-Term Effect Of The Self-Management, Comprehensive Coping Strategy Program On Quality Of Life In Patients With Advanced Breast Cancer Treated With High Dose Chemotherapy, Fannie Gaston-Johansson

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: Due to treatment advances, women with breast cancer have improved survival rates. Longer survival has created a need for coping interventions to assist stress reduction and long term symptoms and improve quality of life (QOL). Prior coping research has been conducted during treatment with one to two coping strategies rather than a comprehensive coping self-management approach. The purpose of this study was to determine differences between QOL in a Comprehensive Coping Strategy Program (CCSP) treated and control group of breast cancer patients one year after treatment. The significance is that the CCSP is expected to reduce stress and improves …

Good Work In Nursing And Relationship To Professional Socialization: A Comparative Analysis Of Two Research Studies And Implications For Nursing Education, M. Christine Alichnie, Joan F. Miller

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: Nursing practice adheres to high standards regardless of the multi-contextual work environment or the paradigm shift in modern health care. This concept of Good Work in Nursing has three major characteristics; excellence, ethics, and engagement (Miller, 2006 & Gardner, 2008). Likewise, professional education results when a professional discipline has devised a system of preparing future practitioners to meet their commitments and fundamental responsibilities to society. A major aim of professional education is to develop a set of values, attitudes, and beliefs to support the professional roles of independent practitioners in conjunction with the acquisition of cognitive and psychomotor skills …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: Appropriate levels of stress can be a motivator for learning. A few studies in Hong Kong and Taiwan demonstrated that various levels of stress were experienced by pre-registration nursing students during their clinical placements. There is a paucity of studies that compare the stress levels of junior and senior nursing students and the existing studies conducted in the Asian context carry a high risk of recall bias. The purpose of this study is to survey and compare two samples of under-graduate students during the periods of their clinical placements for their levels of stress, symptoms and coping strategies. Better …

Publications and Research

In June 2007, a previously undescribed monkey known locally as “lesula” was found in the forests of the middle Lomami Basin in central Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). We describe this new species as Cercopithecus lomamiensis sp. nov., and provide data on its distribution, morphology, genetics, ecology and behavior. C. lomamiensis is restricted to the lowland rain forests of central DRC between the middle Lomami and the upper Tshuapa Rivers. Morphological and molecular data confirm that C. lomamiensis is distinct from its nearest congener, C. hamlyni, from which it is separated geographically by both the Congo (Lualaba) and the Lomami …

[Review Of] Horace's Iambic Criticism: Casting Blame (Iambike Poiesis). By Timothy S. Johnson, Erika Z. Damer Sep 2012

[Review Of] Horace's Iambic Criticism: Casting Blame (Iambike Poiesis). By Timothy S. Johnson, Erika Z. Damer

Classical Studies Faculty Publications

Although Horace's Epodes were frequently dismissed by earlier generations as an uneven poetic collection of obscenity and juvenalia, more recently critics have begun to seriously engage with his first lyric collection. Johnson's important new study offers the first comprehensive English-language monograph on the Epodes since R. W. Carrubba's study of poetic arrangement in 1969. As such,Johnson's study makes a vital new companion to Watson's (2003) Oxford commentary, and his serial reading of Epodes 1-17 provide students and researchers with a novel interpretation of Horace's triumviral collection.

Roof Drainage: Not My Problem ... Maybe, John Lawson Sep 2012

Roof Drainage: Not My Problem ... Maybe, John Lawson

Architectural Engineering

Many structural engineers are surprised to learn that the International Building Code (IBC, 2009) requires the roof structure to be engineered for standing water weight in the vicinity of the drains and scuppers regardless of roof slope. In addition, some low-slope roofs also require special attention for water weight and stiffness for safety against ponding failures or protection against accelerated roofing deterioration. With a mixture of overlapping design disciplines between the architect, plumbing consultant and structural engineer, proper roof drainage is often not fully addressed in building design and can lead to catastrophic collapse.

The Global Language Of Music: The Impact Of Organized Music Experiences On Success In Undergraduate Nursing Programs, Sandra Kay Cesario, Anthony Cesario, Robert Cesario Sep 2012

The Global Language Of Music: The Impact Of Organized Music Experiences On Success In Undergraduate Nursing Programs, Sandra Kay Cesario, Anthony Cesario, Robert Cesario

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: Music, the universal language, transcends ethnic, socio-economic, and geographic barriers and has the potential to enhance success of nursing students. Stringent admission criteria exist for nursing programs worldwide, but better predictors of success are needed to reduce nursing school attrition rates. Admitting students unlikely to succeed expends sparse resources of time, money, and clinical space. Organized music experiences are associated with greater ability in math, reading, cognition, critical thinking, verbal skills, motivation, concentration, confidence, and teamwork - desirable characteristics of a professional nurse. This study examined the association of organized music experiences in grades 5-12 and nursing education success. …

Results: Parents were more authoritative, than authoritarian or permissive; mothers were more authoritative than fathers. Parents raising a child with an orthopedic condition were more authoritarian than parents raising typically developing children or …

Formalizing The Role Of The Clinical Nurse Leader In A Progressive Care Unit, Kathleen M. Ryan Sep 2012

Formalizing The Role Of The Clinical Nurse Leader In A Progressive Care Unit, Kathleen M. Ryan

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

This comprehensive evidence based project was a culmination of almost two years of trialing the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) role and then implementing a formalized CNL role in a Progressive Care Unit at UCSD Medical Center in La Jolla, California. It was maintained that the CNL could positiviely affect patient outcomes and staff satisfaction, and thus the role was formalized in May of 2011 as a Clinical Nurse IV (the highest clinical position a staff RN can achieve). This project will demonstrate that using Lewin's Change Theory and Roger's Theory of Diffusion of Innovation as a framework for this change, …

Accelerated Baccalaureate Nursing Students: Perceptions Of Success, Barbara B. Blozen Sep 2012

Accelerated Baccalaureate Nursing Students: Perceptions Of Success, Barbara B. Blozen

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: Although there are a number of anecdotal reports on demographic characteristics and academic success of accelerated nursing students, few empirical studies have been undertaken to examine these students' success, despite this type of programs' existence for more than a decade, and only three studies have sought to examine the perspective of the accelerated nursing student. Using Knowles' adult learning theory as a guiding framework, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore, from the accelerated nursing students' perspective, the factors they reported as contributing to their success on the NCLEX-RN. This study also examined demographic characteristics of these …

Global Health Nursing Research In Guangzhou, China, Lee-Ellen Kirkhorn, Anja F. Meerwald, Peiru Zhou

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: Approximately one fifth of the one billion overweight or obese people in the world are Chinese. China was once considered to have one of the leanest populations, but it is fast catching up with the West in terms of the prevalence of overweight and obesity; disturbingly, this transition has occurred in a remarkably short time.

Methods: Using a simple quasi-experimental design, more than 200 students from two economically and socially diverse middle schools in China were enrolled in a three week after school nutrition and exercise program that included structured information about balanced diet, eating healthy food, and engaging …
