The Effect Of Direct Instruction And Self-Management Strategies On Writing Fluency Of Students With Learning Disabilities, Shawna Richetti Sep 2012

The Effect Of Direct Instruction And Self-Management Strategies On Writing Fluency Of Students With Learning Disabilities, Shawna Richetti

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this investigation were to evaluate the use of the Reasoning & Writing Direct Instruction program, examine the curriculum-based measurement tools for writing fluency of Total Words Written and Correct Word Sequence, examine the impact of teaching students with disabilities self-management techniques, including self-monitoring, self-graphing, and self-reflecting, and review how self-reflections toward writing and writing performances change through the process. Three fifth grade students, all receiving replacement writing instruction via a resource room, participated in this study. Two of the participants were classified as having a Specific Learning Disability, and one as Other Health Impaired. A single subject …

The Secant Conjecture In The Real Schubert Calculus, Luis D. García-Puente, Nickolas Hein, Christopher Hillar, Abraham Martín Del Campo, James Ruffo, Frank Sottile, Zach Teitler

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We formulate the Secant Conjecture, which is a generalization of the Shapiro Conjecture for Grassmannians. It asserts that an intersection of Schubert varieties in a Grassmannian is transverse with all points real if the flags defining the Schubert varieties are secant along disjoint intervals of a rational normal curve. We present theoretical evidence for this conjecture as well as computational evidence obtained in over one terahertz-year of computing, and we discuss some of the phenomena we observed in our data.

Choosing A Survey Sample When Data On The Population Are Limited: A Method Using Global Positioning Systems And Aerial And Satellite Photographs, Harry S. Shannon, Royce Hutson, Athena Kolbe, Bernadette Stringer, Ted Haines

Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Various methods have been proposed for sampling when data on the population are limited. However, these methods are often biased. We propose a new method to draw a population sample using Global Positioning Systems and aerial or satellite photographs.

Results: We randomly sampled Global Positioning System locations in designated areas. A circle was drawn around each location with radius representing 20 m. Buildings in the circle were identified from satellite photographs; one was randomly chosen. Interviewers selected one household from the building, and interviews were conducted with eligible household members.

Conclusions: Participants had known selection probabilities, allowing proper estimation …

Basia Irland Impacts River Stewards, University Of Dayton

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton

In a wonderful collaboration between the University of Dayton and Antioch College, the River Stewards have been given the opportunity to work with Basia Irland. Her ice books are not only a beautiful demonstration of eco-art, but have helped the Stewards consider the health of our rivers and connect to the sheer beauty of being in nature.

Scalpels V. Hammers: Mitgating Exempt Well Impacts, Nathan S. Bracken

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Most western states allow landowners to withdraw certain amounts of groundwater for specified purposes without obtaining a water right permit. As water demands increase in the West, some developers are using exempt wells to supply water to residential developments without acquiring the permits and water rights needed to build public water supply systems. This has led to concerns that the cumulative impact of these wells could impair senior water rights, create environmental problems, and threaten water quality in some areas. This article explores the considerations associated with mitigating exempt well impacts and argues that surgical approaches focused on specific issues …

Role Of Propionates In Substrate Binding To Heme Oxygenase From Neisseria Meningitidis: A Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study, Dungeng Peng, Li Hua Ma, Kevin M. Smith, Xuhong Zhang, Michihiko Sato, Gerd N. La Mar

Faculty Publications

Heme oxygenase (HO) cleaves hemin into biliverdin, iron, and CO. For mammalian HOs, both native hemin propionates are required for substrate binding and activity. The HO from the pathogenic bacterium Neisseria meningitidis (NmHO) possesses a crystallographically undetected C-terminal fragment that by solution 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is found to fold and interact with the active site. One of the substrate propionates has been proposed to form a salt bridge to the C-terminus rather than to the conventional buried cationic side chain in other HOs. Moreover, the C-terminal dipeptide Arg208His209 cleaves spontaneously over ∼24 h at a rate dependent on …
