Characterization Of The Uptake And Biodistribution Of The Nanoparticles Quantum Dots And Carbon Nanotubes, Taylor Michelle Ingle Sep 2012

Characterization Of The Uptake And Biodistribution Of The Nanoparticles Quantum Dots And Carbon Nanotubes, Taylor Michelle Ingle

Student Theses and Dissertations

With the rapidly expanding field of nanotechnology and the use of nanoparticles, it becomes crucial that science advances in the understanding of the potential associated risks. Inevitably, the increase in use of these particles will result in greater occurrence of exposure. Not only is their relatively small size of concern, but so are the changes in physiochemical characteristics that occur at the nanoscale. A few examples of physical properties that can change as particle sizes become smaller is their color, melting point , optical properties, and solar absorption. While these properties may be beneficial in applications, they can also alter …

Behavioral And Physiological Female Responses To Male Sex Ratio Bias In A Pond-Breeding Amphibian, Kristine L. Grayson, Stephen P. De Lisle, Jerrah E. Jackson, Samuel J. Black, Erica J. Crespi Sep 2012

Behavioral And Physiological Female Responses To Male Sex Ratio Bias In A Pond-Breeding Amphibian, Kristine L. Grayson, Stephen P. De Lisle, Jerrah E. Jackson, Samuel J. Black, Erica J. Crespi

Biology Faculty Publications

Introduction: The phenomenon of sexual conflict has been well documented, and in populations with biased operational sex ratios the consequences for the rarer sex can be severe. Females are typically a limited resource and males often evolve aggressive mating behaviors, which can improve individual fitness for the male while negatively impacting female condition and fitness. In response, females can adjust their behavior to minimize exposure to aggressive mating tactics or minimize the costs of mating harassment. While male-male competition is common in amphibian mating systems, little is known about the consequences or responses of females. The red-spotted newt (Notophthalmus …

Effects Of Small-Scale Dead Wood Additions On Beetles In Southeastern U.S. Pine Forests, Kier D. Klepzig, Michael L. Ferro, Michael D. Ulyshen, Matthew L. Gimmel, Jolie B. Mahfouz, Allan E. Tiarks, Chris E. Carlton Sep 2012

Effects Of Small-Scale Dead Wood Additions On Beetles In Southeastern U.S. Pine Forests, Kier D. Klepzig, Michael L. Ferro, Michael D. Ulyshen, Matthew L. Gimmel, Jolie B. Mahfouz, Allan E. Tiarks, Chris E. Carlton

Faculty Publications

Pitfall traps were used to sample beetles (Coleoptera) in plots with or without inputs of dead loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) wood at four locations (Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and Texas) on the coastal plain of the southeastern United States. The plots were established in 1998 and sampling took place in 1998, 1999, and 2002 (only 1998 for North Carolina). Overall, beetles were more species rich, abundant and diverse in dead wood addition plots than in reference plots. While these differences were greatest in 1998 and lessened thereafter, they were not found to be significant in 1998 due largely to …

Diversities In Virulence, Antifungal Activity, Pigmentation And Dna Fingerprint Among Strains Of Burkholderia Glumae, Hari S. Karki, Bishnu K. Shrestha, Jae Woo Han, Donald E. Groth, Inderjit K. Barphagha, Milton C. Rush, Rebecca A. Melanson, Beom Seok Kim, Jong Hyun Ham

Faculty Publications

Burkholderia glumae is the primary causal agent of bacterial panicle blight of rice. In this study, 11 naturally avirulent and nine virulent strains of B. glumae native to the southern United States were characterized in terms of virulence in rice and onion, toxofalvin production, antifungal activity, pigmentation and genomic structure. Virulence of B. glumae strains on rice panicles was highly correlated to virulence on onion bulb scales, suggesting that onion bulb can be a convenient alternative host system to efficiently determine the virulence of B. glumae strains. Production of toxoflavin, the phytotoxin that functions as a major virulence factor, was …
