Performances And Future Plans Of The Lhc Rf, P. Baudrenghien, T. Mastoridis Sep 2012

Performances And Future Plans Of The Lhc Rf, P. Baudrenghien, T. Mastoridis

Physics

The ramp-up of the LHC operation has been exceptionally fast: from the first acceleration of a single bunch at nominal intensity (1.1E11 p) to 3.5 TeV/c on May 2010, to the accumulation of 11 fb-1 integrated luminosity two years later (June 2012). On the RF side this was made possible by a few key design choices and several developments, that allow reliable LHC operation with 0.35 A DC beam at 4 TeV/c (1380 bunches at 50 ns spacing, 1.5E11 p per bunch). This paper reviews the RF design and presents its performance. Plans are also outlined that would allow operation …

Dr. Douglas Dickens: International Expert On Pastoral Care & Counseling, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

As a child, Dr. Douglas Dickens didn’t have grandiose visions of becoming a world-renowned authority on the care and education of ministers. He never dreamed of the intricate ways God would lead him around the world to serve men and women in ministry. But as Sir Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.”

Effects Of Haptic And 3d Audio Feedback On Pilot Performance And Workload For Quadrotor Uavs In Indoor Environments, Robert Mark Philbrick Sep 2012

Effects Of Haptic And 3d Audio Feedback On Pilot Performance And Workload For Quadrotor Uavs In Indoor Environments, Robert Mark Philbrick

Theses and Dissertations

Indoor flight of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has many applications in environments in which it is undesirable or dangerous for humans to be, such as military reconnaissance or searching for trapped victims in a collapsed building. However, limited visual feedback makes it difficult to pilot UAVs in cluttered and enclosed spaces. Haptic feedback combined with visual feedback has shown to reduce the number of collisions of UAVs in indoor environments; however, it has increased the mental workload of the operator. This thesis investigates the potential of combining novel haptic and 3D audio feedback to provide additional information to operators of …

Perlecan Domain V Induces Vegf Secretion In Brain Endothelial Cells Through Integrin Α5Β1 And Erk-Dependent Signaling Pathways, Douglas N. Clarke, Abraham Al Ahmad, Boyeon Lee, Christi Parham, Lisa Auckland, Andrezj Fertala, Michael Kahle, Courtney S. Shaw, Jill Roberts, Gregory J. Bix Sep 2012

Perlecan Domain V Induces Vegf Secretion In Brain Endothelial Cells Through Integrin Α5Β1 And Erk-Dependent Signaling Pathways, Douglas N. Clarke, Abraham Al Ahmad, Boyeon Lee, Christi Parham, Lisa Auckland, Andrezj Fertala, Michael Kahle, Courtney S. Shaw, Jill Roberts, Gregory J. Bix

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Perlecan Domain V (DV) promotes brain angiogenesis by inducing VEGF release from brain endothelial cells (BECs) following stroke. In this study, we define the specific mechanism of DV interaction with the α(5)β(1) integrin, identify the downstream signal transduction pathway, and further investigate the functional significance of resultant VEGF release. Interestingly, we found that the LG3 portion of DV, which has been suggested to possess most of DV's angio-modulatory activity outside of the brain, binds poorly to α(5)β(1) and induces less BEC proliferation compared to full length DV. Additionally, we implicate DV's DGR sequence as an important element for the interaction …

Educational Salvation: Integrating Critical Spirituality In Educational Leadership, Carlos R. Mccray, Floyd D. Beachum, Christopher Yawn Sep 2012

Educational Salvation: Integrating Critical Spirituality In Educational Leadership, Carlos R. Mccray, Floyd D. Beachum, Christopher Yawn

Journal of Catholic Education

Improving education for students in K-12 urban settings remains a slow-paced and difficult task, with many successes in student learning being episodic at best. Disconnect between government mandates to improve schools and persistent societal issues of poverty and inequity act to increase stress on teachers and educational leaders working in urban schools. Drawing upon the strengths of the African-American community and its collective historical experiences, this study explores creative ways to integrate spirituality in the education of students in urban schools. The authors begin by addressing the contextual and structural issues facing urban schools. They then explain the benefits of …

The Educational Achievement Gap As A Social Justice Issue For Teacher Educators, Rachel Collopy, Connie Bowman, David A. Taylor Sep 2012

The Educational Achievement Gap As A Social Justice Issue For Teacher Educators, Rachel Collopy, Connie Bowman, David A. Taylor

Journal of Catholic Education

The educational achievement gap is a critical social justice issue. Catholic and Marianist conceptions of social justice in particular call people to work with others in their spheres of life to transform institutions in order to further human rights while promoting the common good. Drawing on key elements of Catholic teaching on social justice, we argue that the achievement gap constitutes a social injustice. We then offer a case illustrating collaboration between university-based teacher educators and school faculty to address the achievement gap through transforming the institutions of school and of teacher preparation. The Dayton Early College Academy (DECA), founded …

School Turnaround: Cristo Rey Boston High School Case Study, Jeffrey Thielman Sep 2012

School Turnaround: Cristo Rey Boston High School Case Study, Jeffrey Thielman

Journal of Catholic Education

The mandates of the federal No Child Left Behind Law, including the threat of closing a school for underperformance, have led to multiple public school turnaround attempts. Because turnaround is a relatively new area of focus in education, there is limited research on what does and does not work, and even the definition of turnaround is a work in progress. The research that is available is almost exclusively from the public school sector. This article gives some history and context for school turnarounds currently taking place in the United States and describes the turnaround of a Catholic, inner-city high school …

Our Schools--Our Hope: Reflections On Catholic Identity From The 2011 Catholic Higher Education Collaborative Conference, Bishop David M O'Connell, Rev. Donald J Harrington, Sr. Barbara L Monsegur, Karen Vogtner, Thomas W. Burnford, Mary Jane Krebbs

Journal of Catholic Education

These proceedings include selected presentations on Catholic identity by six participants of the 2011 Catholic Higher Education Collaborative (CHEC) Conference on Catholic Identity at The Catholic University of America (CUA). The conference, jointly sponsored by CUA and St. John’s University, is the fourth in a series of five national conferences sponsored by the collaborative. Each of these presentations looks at Catholic identity from a different perspective, including collaborative partnerships between K-12 schools and higher education; school policies that promote Catholic identity; curriculum; research into Catholic social teaching; and leadership. Contributors include Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., 14th president of CUA …
