The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

Frequent calibration using noise references is used to reduce the effects of time varying fluctuations that naturally occur within sensitive radiometer receivers. Over the years, calibration architectures and processing algorithms have become more sophisticated. Predicting the performance of a given calibration architecture often requires expensive prototyping of hardware; optimizing processing algorithms for nonstationary fluctuations is a challenge. Measurement uncertainty is a figure of merit by which to compare the performance although its analytical calculation can be challenging for complex architectures or adaptive algorithms. This presentation describes a numerical simulator for modeling and analysis of nonstationary time series. Applications of the …

Inter-Calibration Of Airs With Iasi And Cris, L. Larrabee Strow, Sergio De-Souza Machado, H. Motteler

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

The AIRS infrared hyperspectral sensor on NASA AQUA platform will soon be operating for 10 years. The CrIS sensor on NPP/JPSS will extend the 1:30 polar orbit measurements of AIRS, which have been supplemented with the 9:30 orbit infrared hyperspectral measurements of IASI on EUMETSAT's METOP platform. These three instruments will together soon provide a time-series of the Earth's atmospheric and surface radiances that will span a long enough period to start to contribute to a climate data record. We will discuss the inherent accuracy and stability of these instruments, and especially strategies for combining these different instrument data records …

Low Cost, Low Risk Use Of Improved Calibration Techniques To Detect Cloud Climate Feedback Within One Decade Of The Present, Grant Matthews

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

Exelis has developed some new calibration methodologies for Satellite Earth observation data. Maintaining calibration of climate data records (CDRs) is challenging due to many reasons. For example, optics can be subject to degradation of up to 30% in the UV, often due to contamination. Many existing instruments do not have stable on-board calibration sources in the UV-visible region and establishing traceability to NIST standards for solar wavelengths is difficult. On-board blackbodies have also been seen to drift in their thermal output to extents not reflected by their incorporated temperature sensors. Exelis techniques can use Deep Convective Cloud albedo and available …

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

Spectrally resolved thermal radiances measured from orbit with extremely high absolute accuracy (< 0.1 K, k = 3, brightness temperature at scene temperature) constitute a critical observation for future climate benchmark missions. The FTS approach is well suited for the combined requirement of ultra-high accuracy and broad spectral coverage at high spectral resolution. FTS technology inherently provides broad spectral coverage with a small number of detectors, a very well defined instrument line shape (ILS) that can be easily monitored and measured, and the spectral resolution required for accurate line shape and position determination and to accurately calibrate the spectral scale using well-known atmospheric absorption lines. The challenge in the IR FTS sensor development for a climate benchmark measurement mission is to achieve this ultra-high accuracy with a design that can be flight qualified, has long design life, and is reasonably small, simple, and affordable. In this area, our approach is to make use of components with strong spaceflight heritage (direct analogs with high TRL) combined into a functional package for detailed performance testing. The required simplicity is achievable due to the large differences in the sampling and noise requirements for the benchmark climate measurement from those of the typical remote sensing infrared sounders for weather research or operations. An instrument overview and summary of the radiometric performance of the Absolute Radiance Interferometer (ARI) at the University of Wisconsin Space Science and Engineering Center (UW-SSEC) will be presented.

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

The next generation of infrared remote sensing satellite instrumentation, including climate benchmark missions will require better absolute measurement accuracy than now available, and will most certainly rely on the emerging capability to fly SI traceable standards that provide irrefutable absolute measurement accuracy. As an example, instrumentation designed to measure spectrally resolved infrared radiances with an absolute brightness temperature error of better than 0.1 K will require high-emissivity (>0.999) calibration blackbodies with emissivity uncertainty of better than 0.06%, and absolute temperature uncertainties of better than 0.045K (k=3). Key elements of an On-Orbit Absolute Radiance Standard (OARS) meeting these stringent requirements …
