A Cd11d Monoclonal Antibody Treatment Reduces Tissue Injury And Improves Neurological Outcome After Fluid Percussion Brain Injury In Rats, Feng Bao, Sandy R. Shultz, Jeff D. Hepburn, Vanessa Omana, Lynne C. Weaver, Donald P. Cain, Arthur Brown

Paediatrics Publications

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an international health concern often resulting in chronic neurological abnormalities, including cognitive deficits, emotional disturbances, and motor impairments. An anti-CD11d monoclonal antibody that blocks the CD11d/CD18 integrin and vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM)-1 interaction following experimental spinal cord injury improves functional recovery, while reducing the intraspinal number of neutrophils and macrophages, oxidative activity, and tissue damage. Since the mechanisms of secondary injury in the brain and spinal cord are similar, we designed a study to evaluate fully the effects of anti-CD11d treatment after a moderate lateral fluid percussion TBI in the rat. Rats were treated …

Strategies To Improve Health Coverage And Narrow The Equity Gap In Child Survival, Health, And Nutrition, Mickey Chopra Sep 2012

Strategies To Improve Health Coverage And Narrow The Equity Gap In Child Survival, Health, And Nutrition, Mickey Chopra

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

Implementation of innovative strategies to improve coverage of evidence-based interventions, especially in the most marginalised populations, is a key focus of policy makers and planners aiming to improve child survival, health, and nutrition. We present a three-step approach to improvement of the effective coverage of essential interventions. First, we identify four different intervention delivery channels—ie, clinical or curative, outreach, community-based preventive or promotional, and legislative or mass media. Second, we classify which interventions’ deliveries can be improved or changed within their channel or by switching to another channel. Finally, we do a meta-review of both published and unpublished reviews to …

Intention And Interpretation In Hans Namuth's Film, Jackson Pollock, Michael Schreyach Sep 2012

Intention And Interpretation In Hans Namuth's Film, Jackson Pollock, Michael Schreyach

Art and Art History Faculty Research

Because many of Jackson Pollock's most familiar statements are multiply authored, they seem to challenge basic assumptions regarding the transparency of intention to meaning that they are often presumed to enunciate. The fact that Pollock's public declarations about his work are collages, juxtaposing different voices and points of view with his own, complicates our assessment of their validity as univocal expressions of his intentions. In his film Jackson Pollock, Namuth utilizes those statements, many of which concern aspects of Pollock's technical procedure, as part of his strategy to ground the meaning of Pollock's paintings in the processby which …

Library Presentations

Guidebooks, art, archival inventories, drama, public buildings, and road construction come to mind as unique chapters of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) program during depression-era U.S. history. This session will explain what it means for the University of Kentucky Libraries to be designated as an ASERL Center for Excellence for WPA publications. It will highlight key WPA publications with emphasis on public access, both print and electronic, as well as UK’s efforts to promote the collection.

Young Children’S Understanding Of Conservation Concepts, Julia C. Torquati Sep 2012

Young Children’S Understanding Of Conservation Concepts, Julia C. Torquati

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

This presentation will summarize an investigation of young children’s conservation knowledge and reasoning. Eighty‐two preschool aged children (3‐5 years) were interviewed at two points in time six months apart using a semi‐structured interview. The interview protocol developed by Peter Kahn (2001) was used to assess children’s conservation attitudes. This was the first time the interview was used with preschool aged children. Children were asked questions about the importance of animals, plants, parks, and gardens, and whether it is acceptable to litter (and why or why not). Fifty‐seven of the children attended a preschool located at a nature center, ten children …

Precision Measurement Of The 6he Half-Life And The Weak Axial Current In Nuclei, A. Knecht, R. Hong, D. W. Zumwalt, B. G. Delbridge, A. García, P. Müller, H. E. Swanson, I. S. Towner, S. Utsuno, William Williams, C. Wrede

Physics: Faculty Publications

Background: The β decays of 3H and 6He can play an important role in testing nuclear wave-function calculations and fixing low-energy constants in effective-field theory approaches. However, there exists a large discrepancy between previous measurements of the 6He half-life. Purpose: Our measurement aims at resolving this long-standing discrepancy in the 6He half-life and providing a reliable ft value and Gamow-Teller matrix element for comparison with theoretical ab initio calculations. Method: We measured the 6He half-life by counting the β-decay electrons with two scintillator detectors operating in coincidence. Results: The measured 6He half-life is 806.89±0.11 stat-0.19+0.23syst ms corresponding to a relative …

Investigation Of Surface Roughness In Machining Oil Palm Wood, M.Z. Harizam, Y. Nukman, M. Anis, K.F. Tamrin

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Oil palm industry is one of the largest agricultural plantation sectors in Malaysia. The total area under oil palm cultivation is over 2.65 million hectares, producing over 8 million tons of oil annually. The oil palm trunk is converted to oil palm wood after the replantation take place. The machining of wood process by cutting is a demanding technological process because of its specific structure. In many industries, accuracy and precision are crucial parameters for their production to achieve the best quality of cut. One of the qualities to be monitored is the surface roughness, Ra value which has direct …

News About Aggregate Demand And The Business Cycle, Jang-Ting Guo, Anca-Ioana Sirbu, Mark Weder

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

We show that an otherwise standard one-sector real business cycle model with variable capital utilization and mild increasing returns-to-scale is able to generate qualitatively as well as quantitatively realistic aggregate fluctuations driven by news shocks to future consumption demand. In sharp contrast to many studies in the existing expectations- driven business cycle literature, our results do not rely on non-separable preferences or investment adjustment costs.

Drosophila Mauve Mutants Reveal A Role Of Lyst Homologs In The Maturation Of Phagosomes And Autophagosomes, Mokhlasur Rahman, Adam Haberman, Charles Tracy, Sanchali Ray, Helmut Kramer Sep 2012

Drosophila Mauve Mutants Reveal A Role Of Lyst Homologs In The Maturation Of Phagosomes And Autophagosomes, Mokhlasur Rahman, Adam Haberman, Charles Tracy, Sanchali Ray, Helmut Kramer

Biology: Faculty Scholarship

Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS) is a lethal disease caused by mutations that inactivate the lysosomal trafficking regulator protein (LYST). Patients suffer from diverse symptoms including oculocutaneous albinism, recurrent infections, neutropenia and progressive neurodegeneration. These defects have been traced back to over-sized lysosomes and lysosome-related organelles (LROs) in different cell types. Here, we explore mutants in the Drosophila mauve gene as a new model system for CHS. The mauve gene (CG42863) encodes a large BEACH domain protein of 3535 amino acids similar to LYST. This reflects a functional homology between these proteins as mauve mutants also display enlarged LROs, such as pigment …

Open Structure Zno/Cdse Core/Shell Nanoneedle Arrays For Solar Cells, Yanxue Chen, Lin Wei, Guanghua Zhang, Jun Jiao Sep 2012

Open Structure Zno/Cdse Core/Shell Nanoneedle Arrays For Solar Cells, Yanxue Chen, Lin Wei, Guanghua Zhang, Jun Jiao

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Open structure ZnO/CdSe core/shell nanoneedle arrays were prepared on a conducting glass (SnO2:F) substrate by solution deposition and electrochemical techniques. A uniform CdSe shell layer with a grain size of approximately several tens of nanometers was formed on the surface of ZnO nanoneedle cores after annealing at 400°C for 1.5 h. Fabricated solar cells based on these nanostructures exhibited a high short-circuit current density of about 10.5 mA/cm2 and an overall power conversion efficiency of 1.07% with solar illumination of 100 mW/cm2. Incident photo-to-current conversion efficiencies higher than 75% were also obtained.
