An Integrated Encyclopedia Of Dna Elements In The Human Genome, Jainab Khatun Sep 2012

An Integrated Encyclopedia Of Dna Elements In The Human Genome, Jainab Khatun

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The human genome encodes the blueprint of life, but the function of the vast majority of its nearly three billion bases is unknown. The Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) project has systematically mapped regions of transcription, transcription factor association, chromatin structure and histone modification. These data enabled us to assign biochemical functions for 80% of the genome, in particular outside of the well-studied protein-coding regions. Many discovered candidate regulatory elements are physically associated with one another and with expressed genes, providing new insights into the mechanisms of gene regulation. The newly identified elements also show a statistical correspondence to sequence …

Oncostatin M Promotes Mammary Tumor Metastasis To Bone And Osteolytic Bone Degradation, Celeste Bolin, Ken Tawara, Caleb Sutherland, Jeff Redshaw, Patrick S. Aranda, Jim Moselhy, Robin Anderson, Cheryl Jorcyk Sep 2012

Oncostatin M Promotes Mammary Tumor Metastasis To Bone And Osteolytic Bone Degradation, Celeste Bolin, Ken Tawara, Caleb Sutherland, Jeff Redshaw, Patrick S. Aranda, Jim Moselhy, Robin Anderson, Cheryl Jorcyk

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Oncostatin M (OSM) is an interleukin-6 (IL-6) family cytokine that has been implicated in a number of biological processes including inflammation, hematopoiesis, immune responses, development, and bone homeostasis. Recent evidence suggests that OSM may promote breast tumor invasion and metastasis. We investigated the role of OSM in the formation of bone metastases in vivo using the 4T1.2 mouse mammary tumor model in which OSM expression was knocked down using shRNA (4T1.2-OSM). 4T1.2-OSM cells were injected orthotopically into Balb/c mice, resulting in a greater than 97% decrease in spontaneous metastasis to bone compared to control cells. Intratibial injection of these same …

Between The Mob And The Noose: The Lynching Intercessor In American Literature And Film, Abigail Thibault Horne Sep 2012

Between The Mob And The Noose: The Lynching Intercessor In American Literature And Film, Abigail Thibault Horne

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In my dissertation, I note the frequent, post-Civil War presence of an individual character that opposes a lynch mob by interceding on behalf of the intended lynching victim. I argue that this figure, which I term the lynching intercessor, is a trope for racial reconciliation in American literature and film. The intercessor works to mediate between loyalty to an ideal democracy and recognition of a past and present that is inextricable from violent, racist oppression. While the lynching intercessor often negotiates the prevention of violence, the intercessor also re-imbues the professional, white: and, usually, male) individual as the rightful embodiment …

No-Shows To Primary Care Appointments: Subsequent Acute Care Utilization Among Diabetic Patients, Lynn A. Nuti, Mark Lawley, Ayten Turkcan, Zhiyi Tian, Lingsong Zhang, Karen Chang, Deanna R. Willis, Laura P. Sands Sep 2012

No-Shows To Primary Care Appointments: Subsequent Acute Care Utilization Among Diabetic Patients, Lynn A. Nuti, Mark Lawley, Ayten Turkcan, Zhiyi Tian, Lingsong Zhang, Karen Chang, Deanna R. Willis, Laura P. Sands

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Background

Patients who no-show to primary care appointments interrupt clinicians’ efforts to provide continuity of care. Prior literature reveals no-shows among diabetic patients are common. The purpose of this study is to assess whether no-shows to primary care appointments are associated with increased risk of future emergency department (ED) visits or hospital admissions among diabetics.

Methods

A prospective cohort study was conducted using data from 8,787 adult diabetic patients attending outpatient clinics associated with a medical center in Indiana. The outcomes examined were hospital admissions or ED visits in the 6 months (182 days) following the patient’s last scheduled primary …

Gender Equality In Kosovo's Uniformed Services : [Presentation Given August 24, 2012], Arbenita Sylejmani

Theses

This project addresses women’s participation and decision-making role in Kosovo’s three main uniformed services: the Kosovo Customs (KC), Kosovo Police (KP), and the Kosovo Security Force (KSF). There are currently small numbers of women in these three uniformed services, and even less in decision-making positions. This project has considered institutional mechanisms and ways to improve women’s participation in these institutions in order to empower their role in Kosovo society. It also includes analysis from data sources that were available for current women’s participation in these institutions ... This study did find a significant difference between female of KC, KP and …

The Cyclase-Associated Protein Cap1 Is Important For Proper Regulation Of Infection-Related Morphogenesis In Magnaporthe Oryzae., Xiaoying Zhou, Haifeng Zhang, Guotian Li, Brian Shaw, Jin-Rong Xu Sep 2012

The Cyclase-Associated Protein Cap1 Is Important For Proper Regulation Of Infection-Related Morphogenesis In Magnaporthe Oryzae., Xiaoying Zhou, Haifeng Zhang, Guotian Li, Brian Shaw, Jin-Rong Xu

Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Surface recognition and penetration are critical steps in the infection cycle of many plant pathogenic fungi. In Magnaporthe oryzae, cAMP signaling is involved in surface recognition and pathogenesis. Deletion of the MAC1 adenylate cyclase gene affected appressorium formation and plant infection. In this study, we used the affinity purification approach to identify proteins that are associated with Mac1 in vivo. One of the Mac1-interacting proteins is the adenylate cyclase-associated protein named Cap1. CAP genes are well-conserved in phytopathogenic fungi but none of them have been functionally characterized. Deletion of CAP1 blocked the effects of a dominant RAS2 allele …

The Challenges Of Oral History In The 21st Century: Diversity, Inequality And Identity Construction Using Online Video Oral Histories In University Courses Across The Curriculum, Gail Gradowski, Jill Goodman Gould Sep 2012

The Challenges Of Oral History In The 21st Century: Diversity, Inequality And Identity Construction Using Online Video Oral Histories In University Courses Across The Curriculum, Gail Gradowski, Jill Goodman Gould

English

Thanks to the internet, educators now have unprecedented access to oral histories. We are examining the way that video oral histories can be used and integrated in various kinds of university courses. Now easily available to educators are a wide range of oral histories, from small collections like Ball State University's video interviews of 40 members of the U.S. Army's First Infantry Division from the Vietnam War to large archives of oral histories such the Densho Digital Archive of over 600 video interviews documenting the Japanese American internment during WWII. The variety is already impressive and it is growing very …
