Feasibility Study On Implementation Of Medium Temperature Solar Thermal Energy In Industrial Processes: A Case Study In Malaysia / Chin Chuan Kong, Chuan Kong Chin

Student Works (2010-2019)

A case study on the feasibility of implementing medium temperature solar thermal energy in industrial processes in Malaysia is conducted. The objective is to determine if it is technically and economically viable to utilize the solar thermal renewable energy at a temperature range of 80-250°C as a substitute to conventional means of generating thermal energy. Solar energy is the source of most other renewable energies, and Malaysia being situated at the equator makes us geographically favorable to harness this free energy. Almost half of the industrial processes use thermal energy rather than electrical energy, and the output of a solar …

But Are They Connected?: A Report On The Queens College Technology Survey Of The Use Of Ubiquitous Tools For Learning, Eva M. Fernández, Michelle C. Fraboni Sep 2012

But Are They Connected?: A Report On The Queens College Technology Survey Of The Use Of Ubiquitous Tools For Learning, Eva M. Fernández, Michelle C. Fraboni

Publications and Research

The casual observer of the student population at Queens College (an urban, public, predominantly undergraduate campus) is awed by the ubiquity of technology, offering students the ability to communicate and participate in learning anytime, anywhere. They text, email, facebook, and tweet all day long. They have nearly instant access to the digital tools that have been touted as changing teaching and learning at all levels of education. With over 80% of our population born in or after 1980, there is an assumption that these digital natives intuitively know about and prefer digital tools for learning. With this in mind, and …

Beach Sand Filtration As Pre-Treatment For Ro Desalination, Rico Bartak, Thomas Grischek, Kamal Ghodeif, Chittaranjan Ray Sep 2012

Beach Sand Filtration As Pre-Treatment For Ro Desalination, Rico Bartak, Thomas Grischek, Kamal Ghodeif, Chittaranjan Ray

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Membrane fouling has a strong negative impact on the efficiency of reverse osmosis membranes in seawater desalination. Although reports indicate that water abstracted by beach sand filtration systems on the Mediterranean and Red Seas leads to less membrane fouling compared to direct seawater intakes, only limited information can be found on the efficiency of such systems in removing biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC), an important fouling agent.

This article describes different designs of beach sand filtration systems. In order to investigate the reduction during beach sand filtration of parameters relevant to membrane fouling, such as total organic carbon (TOC), turbidity …

Sequencing And Analysis Of The Gastrula Transcriptome Of The Brittle Star Ophiocoma Wendtii, Roy Vaughn, Nancy Garnhart, James R. Garey, W. Kelley Thomas, Brian T. Livingston Sep 2012

Sequencing And Analysis Of The Gastrula Transcriptome Of The Brittle Star Ophiocoma Wendtii, Roy Vaughn, Nancy Garnhart, James R. Garey, W. Kelley Thomas, Brian T. Livingston

Hubbard Center for Genome Studies (HCGS)

Background

The gastrula stage represents the point in development at which the three primary germ layers diverge. At this point the gene regulatory networks that specify the germ layers are established and the genes that define the differentiated states of the tissues have begun to be activated. These networks have been well-characterized in sea urchins, but not in other echinoderms. Embryos of the brittle star Ophiocoma wendtii share a number of developmental features with sea urchin embryos, including the ingression of mesenchyme cells that give rise to an embryonic skeleton. Notable differences are that no micromeres are formed during cleavage …

Delivering Sustainable Buildings In Retail Construction, S Zainab, W Pan, S Goodhew

School of Art, Design and Architecture

The demand for high performance 'green' or 'sustainable' buildings is becoming increasingly important in the retail industry. Large construction companies in this sector have started to show leadership by working with their customers and supply chains towards sustainability in both products and operations. However, it remains associated risks be minimised, in order to add value and differentiate the output of retail construction. This paper reviews the practice of sustainable buildings within the context of retail construction, and also explores how the UK mainstream retail sector is currently addressing the challenges of sustainable retail buildings. The arguments are informed by a …

Internships And The Making Of Future Lawyers, Seow Hon Tan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

As law firm internships provide law students with their first substantial encounters with lawyers, in situations where they are especially eager to impress, a project was undertaken to examine the impact of private law firm internships on the professional identities of future lawyers. Fifty-two volunteers from the Singapore Management University, which mandates 10 weeks of internships with approved partners, were surveyed. Most had done corporate or civil litigation work at local firms in Singapore. The findings of this research project were presented at the fifth International Legal Ethics Conference, held in Canada in July.

Situated Peer Coaching And Unfolding Cases In The Fundamentals Skills Laboratory, Deborah O. Himes, Patricia K. Ravert Sep 2012

Situated Peer Coaching And Unfolding Cases In The Fundamentals Skills Laboratory, Deborah O. Himes, Patricia K. Ravert

Faculty Publications

Using unfolding case studies and situated peer coaching for the Fundamentals Skills Laboratory provides students with individualized feedback and creates a realistic clinical learning experience. A quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-intervention data was used to evaluate changes in student ratings of the course. An instrument was used to examine students' self-ratings and student comments about each lab. We found that students' ratings of the lab remained high with the new method and self-evaluations of their performance were higher as the semester progressed. Students appreciated the personalized feedback associated with peer coaching and demonstrated strong motivation and self-regulation in learning. …

Defining The Role Of Ultrasound In Drug Delivery, William G. Pitt Sep 2012

Defining The Role Of Ultrasound In Drug Delivery, William G. Pitt

Faculty Publications

Ultrasound is a very effective modality for drug delivery because energy that is noninvasively transmitted through the skin can be focused on a specific location and employed to release drug at that site. Most of the drug delivery techniques employ one or both of the results of ultrasonic insonation – the generation of thermal energy, called hyperthermia, or the oscillation of gas bubbles, called acoustic cavitation. Cavitation perturbs cell membrane structures via several modes and increases the permeability to drugs or other solutes. Microconvection, caused by stable cavitation, shears cell membranes. The shock waves and fluid jets of inertial cavitation …

Whose Story Is It? An Autoethnography Concerning Narrative Identity, Alec J. Grant, Laetitia Zeeman Sep 2012

Whose Story Is It? An Autoethnography Concerning Narrative Identity, Alec J. Grant, Laetitia Zeeman

The Qualitative Report

This paper is divided into three parts, each separated by centrally spaced asterisks. The first part, co-written on the basis of the standpoint interests of both authors, outlines the historical, philosophical, theoretical and methodological contexts for the use of autoethnographic short stories in the social and human sciences. The functions and representational practices of this genre are reviewed and discussed, and the main criticisms leveled by its detractors responded to. This sets the scene for the second part of the paper, an autoethnographic short story. Effectively a story of stories, it was constructed directly from the first author’s memories of …

Life Lived Well: A Description Of Wellness Across The Lifespan Of A Senior Woman, Whitney L. Jarnagin, Marianne Woodside Sep 2012

Life Lived Well: A Description Of Wellness Across The Lifespan Of A Senior Woman, Whitney L. Jarnagin, Marianne Woodside

The Qualitative Report

The concept of wellness provides a positive view of life development that can support psychological support and counseling. There is little in the literature about wellness and seniors, especially women. This study describes one senior woman’s wellness across the life span by addressing two research questions: (a) What are the experiences of one woman’s wellness across the life span as analyzed through the lens of the Indivisible Self (Myers & Sweeney, 2004, 2005) model of wellness; and (b) What experiences does one woman describe related to the model’s second order factors: the Creative Self; the Coping Self; the Social Self; …

A Duoethnography On Duoethnography: More Than A Book Review, Amanda O. Latz, Jennifer L. Murray

The Qualitative Report

Within this duoethnographic book review, we sought to carry out and compose our co-authored review of Norris, Sawyer, and Lund’s (2012) edited text by using the method put forward within its pages. What follows is a duoethnographic book review. Through the processes of jointly reading, note taking, conversing, sharing, and negotiating, we have created a dialogic, multi-vocal, and candid review of this compendium. Throughout our now-public dialogue, readers will gain an understanding of both the book and the method on which it is focused. Completing this review in the fashion we did, we hope, provides readers with the needed information …

The Ethics Of Fake Reference, Wayne Bivens-Tatum Sep 2012

The Ethics Of Fake Reference, Wayne Bivens-Tatum

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

A common assignment in introductory reference classes these days requires library school students to ask questions of a virtual reference service—usually not at their own university library—and evaluate their encounter. Often they are instructed to ask a question that might be of genuine interest to them, but there is no way to guarantee that the students even have a question of interest, leading in some cases to students asking random questions of these services. Regardless, such assignments might benefit the instructors and students, but they do so at the expense of librarians. One such interaction led to an ethical analysis …

Reserve Textbooks: To Buy, Or Not To Buy?, Julie Middlemas, Patricia Morrison, Nadra Farina-Hess

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

There is convincing evidence that academic libraries are used less frequently for research than in the past, due to the advent of the Internet. This begs the question: what role does the current library have for students? It can be argued that we simply need to convince students and faculty of library viability, or, another route would be to give students what they are asking for. And textbooks, via course reserves, are what they request most at Grossmont College. Collection development policies typically contain some verbiage that equates to “the library does not collect textbooks, unless they are donated by …
