The Qualitative Report
Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design: Choosing Among Five Approaches (3rd ed.) is an informative, engaging and user-friendly book by J. W. Creswell (2012) that is focused on practical application of qualitative research methods in social inquiry. The author provided a useful comparison of the five types of qualitative inquiry (narrative, phenomenology, ethnography, grounded theory, and case study) and discussed foundational and methodological aspects of the five traditional approaches. Creswell also effectively demonstrated how the type of the approach of qualitative inquiry shaped the design or procedures of a study. This book could be particularly useful to novice researchers and graduate …

Over the years, many policies have been implemented across nations to prevent, reduce and tighten enforcement on smoking and tobacco use. However, despite all of the major initiatives, smoking related deaths and diseases still remain high and present a major challenge for many nations of the world. In this paper we argue that conducting a critical ethnography study in different settings, as this research sets out to do (in Nigeria) is a first step to understanding the tobacco control policies that will work effectively in different resource settings. As the act of smoking becomes global, it is beneficial to study …

Nahuatl As A Classical, Foreign, And Additional Language: A Phenomenological Study, Dustin De Felice
The Qualitative Report
In this study, participants learning an endangered language variety shared their experiences, thoughts, and feelings about the often complex and diverse language-learning process. I used phenomenological interviews in order to learn more about these English or Spanish language speakers’ journey with the Nahuatl language. From first encounter to their current state in their journey, participants described their challenges with gaining access to the language through courses, materials and institutions, their language observations and their sustaining motivations. In addition to those descriptions, my analysis showed many participants shared two underlying motivations for studying this language: (a) using the Nahuatl language for …

Multispecies Remote Sensing Of Vehicle Emissions On Sherman Way In Van Nuys, California, Gary A. Bishop, Brent G. Schuchmann, Donald H. Stedman, Douglas R. Lawson
Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test Publications
As part of the 2010 Van Nuys tunnel study, researchers from the University of Denver measured on-road fuel-specific light-duty vehicle emissions from nearly 13,000 vehicles on Sherman Way (0.4 miles west of the tunnel) in Van Nuys, CA, with its multi-species FEAT remote sensor a week ahead of the tunnel measurements. The remote sensing mean gram per kilogram carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) measurements are 8.9% lower, 41%, and 24% higher than the tunnel measurements respectively. The remote sensing CO/NOx and HC/NOx mass ratios are 28% lower and 20% higher than …

An action for declaratory judgment provides a party with the unique opportunity to obtain a preventative, binding ruling on “a case of actual controversy.” Crucially, if a declaratory judgment action does not involve an actual “case or controversy”, the matter will be summarily dismissed for a lack of subject matter jurisdiction.

Electrical properties of p-Ge1−ySny (y = 0.06%) grown on n-Si substrate were investigated through temperature-dependent Hall-effect measurements. It was found that there exists a degenerate parallel conducting layer in Ge1−ySny/Si and a second, deeper acceptor in addition to a shallow acceptor. This parallel conducting layer dominates the electrical properties of the Ge1−ySny layer below 50 K and also significantly affects those properties at higher temperatures. Additionally, a conductivity type conversion from p to n was observed around 370 K for this sample. A two-layer conducting model was used …

Will Cuba's Electricity Sector Hold The Country Back?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor
Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
A massive power outage hit two-thirds of Cuba's provinces earlier this month, a sign of the country's aging infrastructure. According to analysts, modernizing the system could cost several billion dollars. Meanwhile, two recent attempts at exploratory drilling off the Cuban coast have been unsuccessful. Will the electricity sector hold the country back as the government takes steps to liberalize the economy and increase consumption? How serious are Cuba's energy woes? Is the government partly at fault for mismanaging the sector, as some critics allege, or are sanctions entirely to blame?

This study was conducted to find out user satisfaction with services and resources at the Institute for Educational Development and Extension (IEDE) Library in University of Education, Winneba, Ghana. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The questions were both open- closed ended. The target population was 4,539 undergraduate students who patronise the library in all the nine Departments located at the North campus of the University of Education, Winneba. Ten percent population from each of the nine (9) departments was selected. In the entire total sample for the …
