The Semiotic Ecology And Linguistic Complexity Of An Online Game World, Steven L. Thorne, Ingrid Fischer, Xiaofei Lu Sep 2012

The Semiotic Ecology And Linguistic Complexity Of An Online Game World, Steven L. Thorne, Ingrid Fischer, Xiaofei Lu

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

Multiplayer online games form complex semiotic ecologies that include game-generated texts, player-to-player communication and collaboration, and associated websites that support in-game play. This article describes an exploratory study of the massively multiplayer online game (MMO) World of Warcraft (WoW), with specific attention to its qualities as a setting for second language (L2) use and development. This empirical study seeks to answer the following question: What is the nature of the linguistic ecology that WoW players are exposed to? Many studies have described the developmental opportunities presented by commercially available gaming environments (e.g., Gee, 2003, 2007), their value as sites of …

Predicting The Difficulty Of Pure, Strict, Epistatic Models: Metrics For Simulated Model Selection, Ryan J. Urbanowicz, Jeff Kiralis, Jonathan M. Fisher, Jason H. Moore Sep 2012

Predicting The Difficulty Of Pure, Strict, Epistatic Models: Metrics For Simulated Model Selection, Ryan J. Urbanowicz, Jeff Kiralis, Jonathan M. Fisher, Jason H. Moore

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background:

Algorithms designed to detect complex genetic disease associations are initially evaluated using simulated datasets. Typical evaluations vary constraints that influence the correct detection of underlying models (i.e. number of loci, heritability, and minor allele frequency). Such studies neglect to account for model architecture (i.e. the unique specification and arrangement of penetrance values comprising the genetic model), which alone can influence the detectability of a model. In order to design a simulation study which efficiently takes architecture into account, a reliable metric is needed for model selection.

Results:

We evaluate three metrics as predictors of relative model detection difficulty derived …

A Tiffany Window In The Virginia Museum Of Fine Arts And The Patronage Of The Saunders Family Of Richmond, Joshua Kline Sep 2012

A Tiffany Window In The Virginia Museum Of Fine Arts And The Patronage Of The Saunders Family Of Richmond, Joshua Kline

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this research is to present an important but forgotten Tiffany interior, that of All Saints Episcopal Church, and focuses on the source for the Saunders memorial window, Christ Resurrection. After portraying the Saunders Family and the context of the window and church interior as an important part of Richmond’s history, this thesis sets up a number of inquiries regarding Christ Resurrection. What are the literary sources; what are the formal sources, from the Renaissance to the late nineteenth century; and what is the meaning of the composition? This thesis utilizes an art historical method of archival, connoisseurial, …

Effect Of Accessory Power Take-Off Variation On A Turbofan Engine Performance, Anis Faidi Sep 2012

Effect Of Accessory Power Take-Off Variation On A Turbofan Engine Performance, Anis Faidi

Theses and Dissertations

Engine fuel efficiency of aerospace vehicles can be reached by different techniques. One way to do that is to reduce aircraft subsystems power supply effects on the engine performance. Previous research work has showed that extracting bleed air from the high pressure compressor exit is more efficient than extracting the equivalent amount of energy from the low pressure spool shaft. A high bypass turbofan engine was modeled using the Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS). The baseline engine performance was evaluated at different flight conditions of Mach number and altitude. To better understand the effect of air bleed take-off and shaft …

Colloidal Metal Chalcogenide Nanocrystals, Xiaogang Peng, Zuoyan Peng, Lianhua Qu Sep 2012

Colloidal Metal Chalcogenide Nanocrystals, Xiaogang Peng, Zuoyan Peng, Lianhua Qu

Patents Granted

A method of synthesizing colloidal nanocrystals is disclosed using metal oxides or metal salts as a precursor. The metal oxides or metal salts are combined with a ligand and then heated in combination with a coordinating solvent. Upon heating, the metal oxides or salts are converted to stable soluble metal complexes. The metal complexes are formed by cationic species combining with the ligands and/or with the coordinating solvent. Finally, an elemental chalcogenic precursor, for example, Se, Te, or S, is introduced into the soluble metal complex to complete the formation of the nanocrystals at a controllable rate. High-quality CdSe, CdTe, …

Background: The rising demand for pork has resulted in a massive expansion of pig production in Uganda. This has resulted in increased contact between humans and pigs. Pigs can act as reservoirs for emerging infectious diseases. Therefore identification of potential zoonotic pathogens is important for public health surveillance. In this study, during a routine general surveillance for African swine fever, domestic pigs from Uganda were screened for the presence of RNA and DNA viruses using a high-throughput pyrosequencing method. Findings. Serum samples from 16 domestic pigs were collected from five regions in Uganda and pooled accordingly. Genomic DNA and RNA …

Resolution Enhancement Optimizations For Hyperspectral And Multispectral Synthetic Image Fusion, Charles R. Bostater Sep 2012

Resolution Enhancement Optimizations For Hyperspectral And Multispectral Synthetic Image Fusion, Charles R. Bostater

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Many sensor systems are available for sensing the earth surface from satellites as well as airborne and mobile platforms. Thus, fusing data from multiple sensors is becoming a common theme in earth remote sensing. A major goal of remote sensing image fusion is resolution enhancement. In this paper, optimization techniques are presented and discussed in order to help make an image fusion process a practical method for not only spectral signature based image analysis but also for algorithm development in remote sensing of water. The technique described and explored in this paper includes the identification of feature areas, stratified random …
