Black Us Army Bands And Their Bandmasters In World War I, Peter M. Lefferts
Black Us Army Bands And Their Bandmasters In World War I, Peter M. Lefferts
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
This essay sketches the story of the bands and bandmasters of the twenty seven new black army regiments which served in the U.S. Army in World War I. They underwent rapid mobilization and demobilization over 1917-1919, and were for the most part unconnected by personnel or traditions to the long-established bands of the four black regular U.S. Army regiments that preceded them and continued to serve after them. Pressed to find sufficient numbers of willing and able black band leaders, the army turned to schools and the entertainment industry for the necessary talent. The newly formed bands entertained servicemen and …

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
Gloves. Plastic caps. Garbage bags. Food prep. Assembly lines. Clean up. Yard work. Helping others. The aforementioned items may not typically bring to mind elements of one’s first college experiences, but for members of the Gardner-Webb class of 2016, the two are now synonymous. Around 400 students took part in freshmen community service projects on Monday, both on the GWU campus and in other locations within Cleveland County.

Magneto-Elastic Behavior In Hard- And Soft-Mre's Including Demagnetizing Effects, Juan Roche
Magneto-Elastic Behavior In Hard- And Soft-Mre's Including Demagnetizing Effects, Juan Roche
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis studies the magnetic and mechanical behavior of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) based on four possible permutations defined along particle alignment (Aligned and Unaligned) and magnetization (Hard- or Soft-magnetic) pairs. These pairs designations yield classes A-H, U-H, A-S and U-S. The last two classes comprise traditional MREs. Samples were fabricated by mixing DOW HS II silicone elastomer compound and 30% by volume of either nominally 40-micron M-type barium hexaferrite (BaM) or 325-mesh iron (Fe) particles cured with or without the presence of a magnetic field. Magnetization and density measurements were employed to help confirm fabrication of the four distinct classes. …
Student Involvement Theory: Patterns Of Sport Club Participation At Rowan University, Brian Stelzer
Student Involvement Theory: Patterns Of Sport Club Participation At Rowan University, Brian Stelzer
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to examine patterns of involvement relating to the sport club student athletes during the 2011/12 academic year at Rowan University. The study also sought to examine how this involvement affected attitudes of students toward various aspects of campus. Survey responses were analyzed to determine frequency, mean, standard deviation, percentages and correlations between demographics and reported involvement activities. The study examined the similarities between club sports, varsity athletics, and student government involvement at Rowan University. The findings suggested that students involved in sport clubs chose other physical activities, such as exercising and intramural athletics, as …

Using Student Response System (Srs) To Reduce Off-Task Behavior Of Students With Behavior Problems, Mary Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of clickers on decreasing off-task behavior of students with behavior problems in Language and math classes. A total of five students and one special education teacher in a self-contained classroom participated in the study. A single-subject research design with ABAB phases was used. An online program called "Class Dojo" was used to record study behavior with a chart immediately to show their on-task and off-task behavior. During the baseline, student behavior was recorded in both Language and math classes for 5 days. During the intervention phase, each participating student …
Racial And Socioeconomic Differences In Special Education Students Returning To General Education, Katie Aspinwall
Racial And Socioeconomic Differences In Special Education Students Returning To General Education, Katie Aspinwall
Theses and Dissertations
Education's history has been shadowed by disparities in the quality of education delivered universally. Particularly highlighted are the disparities between the cases of socioeconomic status and racial background. Special education has been identified for decades as containing an overrepresentation of minorities classified. This study has analyzed retrospective data from the New Jersey Department of Special Education public website to examine if this pattern of overrepresentation of minorities continues to be represented in the population that returns to general education. The current study also analyzed the District Factor Grouping to investigate the implications of the school district's socioeconomic status in relation …

Multipartite Quantum Entanglement Evolution In Photosynthetic Complexes, Jing Zhu, Sabre Kais, Alan Aspuru-Guzik, Sam Rodriques, Ben Brock, Peter J. Love

We investigate the evolution of entanglement in the Fenna-Matthew-Olson (FMO) complex based on simulations using the scaled hierarchical equations of motion approach. We examine the role of entanglement in the FMO complex by direct computation of the convex roof. We use monogamy to give a lower bound for entanglement and obtain an upper bound from the evaluation of the convex roof. Examination of bipartite measures for all possible bipartitions provides a complete picture of the multipartite entanglement. Our results support the hypothesis that entanglement is maximum primary along the two distinct electronic energy transfer pathways. In addition, we note that …

Incorporation Of Quantum Effects For Selected Degrees Of Freedom Into The Trajectory-Based Dynamics Using Spatial Domains, Sophya V. Garashchuk, Mikhail V. Volkov
Faculty Publications
The approach of defining quantum corrections on nuclear dynamics of molecular systems incorporated approximately into selected degrees of freedom, is described. The approach is based on the Madelung-de-Broglie-Bohm formulation of time-dependent quantum mechanics which represents a wavefunction in terms of an ensemble of trajectories. The trajectories follow classical laws of motion except that the quantum potential, dependent on the wavefunction amplitude and its derivatives, is added to the external, classical potential. In this framework the quantum potential, determined approximately for practical reasons, is included only into the “quantum” degrees of freedom describing light particles such as protons, while neglecting with …

Estimating Technical Efficiency In Micro Panels, Qu Feng, William C. Horrace
Estimating Technical Efficiency In Micro Panels, Qu Feng, William C. Horrace
Economics - All Scholarship
Bootstrap confidence intervals on fixed-effects efficiency estimates in micro panels exhibit low coverage probabilities. We propose an alternative efficiency measure involving the mean of the firm effects. With the same estimated efficiency ranks as the traditional measure, its corresponding bootstrap confidence intervals have better coverage probabilities.

Method For Determining Critical Points In Location Data Generated By Location-Based Applications, Sean Barbeau, Philip L. Winters, Rafael Perez, Miguel Labrador, Nevine Georggi
USF Patents
Provided is a critical point method used to determine the points of a real-time stream of location data, such as Global Positioning System (GPS) data, that should be retained based on their importance in reconstructing the travel path of a mobile device. The method may run on a mobile device or on a server. When run on a mobile device, the method reduces the amount of data transferred between mediums by only transferring points that are critical to reconstructing the path of travel of the mobile device. This reduction saves power used in the wireless transmission and reception of the …

Rf Microwave Circuit And Pulse Shaping Method, Erick Maxwell, Thomas Weller, Ebenezer Odu
USF Patents
A multi-port circuit and corresponding method for simultaneous shaping of sub-nanosecond pulses (MCS3P). The MCS3P includes a coupled-line coupler, a Schottky detector diode, and circuitry for compressing the rising and falling edges of a waveform. The MCS3P simultaneously produces square wave, Gaussian, and monocycle waveforms by differentiating a sinusoidal source. The method includes the steps of compressing the rising edge of a sinusoidal source waveform, differentiating the resulting waveform to form a square waveform and a Gaussian waveform, filtering out the positive going Gaussian to produce a negative going Gaussian, differentiating the Gaussian waveform to form a monocycle waveform, and …
