Faulty Phrases: "There Is No Such Thing As Perfection", Michael Christison Oct 2012

Faulty Phrases: "There Is No Such Thing As Perfection", Michael Christison

The Intellectual Standard

In regard to this saying, one of the most notable references can be found in the movie Tron: Legacy. Although not a direct quote, the character Kevin Flynn, played by Jeff Bridges, communicates a very similar message to the public: "The thing about perfection is that it's unknowable. It's impossible, but it's also right in front of us all the time:' This stance from Flynn, or rather the scriptwriters, epitomizes the commonplace idea that I wish to critically examine.

Faulty Phrases: "There Are No Absolutes" & "The Truth Is Relative", Jaret Kanarek Oct 2012

Faulty Phrases: "There Are No Absolutes" & "The Truth Is Relative", Jaret Kanarek

The Intellectual Standard

"There are no absolutes:' "The truth is relative:' Each phrase implies and necessitates the truth of the other. An absolute is something that is universally true, that is, its truth is independent of all other factors or contexts (New Oxford American Dictionary). To say, "there are no absolutes:' is to say that there are no independent universal truths. All truths are therefore dependent. "The truth is relative" makes exactly this claim. Philosophically speaking, that which is relative "is dependent on something else" (New Oxford American Dictionary). But the concepts of relativity and dependence do not exist in a vacuum. For …

A Day At Filastrocca Preschool, Pistoia, Italy: Meaning Making Through Literacy And Creative Experience, Keely D. Cline, Carolyn Pope Edwards, Algo Giacomelli, Lella Gandini, Donatella Giovannini, Annalia Galardini

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

In this article,1 we explore how the library teacher of an Italian preschool with a special mission focused on books, stories, and the imagination uses group literacy activities as a context for encouraging shared meaning making through creative experiences. We take readers inside one day at the Italian Preschool, Filastrocca, providing detailed descriptions and analysis of interactions and activities. We suggest that elaborate extended dialogue among children and the teacher, promotion of empathy through opportunities to take others’ perspectives (including book characters’), and group engagement in shared and multi-faceted creativity are important characteristics related to meaning making in the context …

Angry Judges, Terry A. Maroney Oct 2012

Angry Judges, Terry A. Maroney

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Judges get angry. Law, however, is of two minds as to whether they should; more importantly, it is of two minds as to whether judges’ anger should influence their behavior and decision making. On the one hand, anger is the quintessentially judicial emotion. It involves appraisal of wrongdoing, attribution of blame, and assignment of punishment — precisely what we ask of judges. On the other, anger is associated with aggression, impulsivity, and irrationality. Aristotle, through his concept of virtue, proposed reconciling this conflict by asking whether a person is angry at the right people, for the right reasons, and in …

Evaluation Of Direct Detection Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Complex In Respiratory And Non-Respiratory Clinical Specimens Using The Cepheid Gene Xpert System, Souad M. Al-Ateah, Maha M. Al-Dowaidi, Noura A. El-Khizzi

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To compare the sensitivity and specificity of Cepheid Gene Xpert, MTB/RIF assay for direct detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) and rifampin (RIF) resistance with conventional methods in respiratory and non-respiratory clinical specimens. METHODS: We used a cross sectional design to evaluate a diagnostic test at the TB Section of the Division of Microbiology, Central Military Laboratory and Blood Bank, Prince Sultan Military Medical City, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from October 2011 to January 2012. Higher Scrotal Uptake Ratio Of (99m)Tc-Mdp On Bone Scans In Newly Diagnosed Prostate Cancer : A Reliable Indicator Of Pelvic Node Metastasis., Maseeh Uz Zaman, Nosheen Fatima, Zafar Sajjad, Ibrahim Hashmi, Khalid Khan

Department of Radiology

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

Pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) is the gold standard procedure for nodal staging in prostate cancer (PC) but less commonly used due to its invasiveness. More commonly computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used although these have limited sensitivities and specificities. The aim of this study was to find out the correlation between higher scrotal uptake ratio (SUR) of (99m)Tc-methylene diphosphonate (MDP) on bone scan and pelvic nodemetastasis in patients with PC at high risk for nodal metastasis.

METHODS:

This was a retrospective study which included 68 biopsy proven newly diagnosed PC patients who had …

Beware Of The Diamond Dogs: Why A 'Credentials Alone' Conception Of Probable Cause Violates The Compulsory Process Clause, Colin Miller Oct 2012

Beware Of The Diamond Dogs: Why A 'Credentials Alone' Conception Of Probable Cause Violates The Compulsory Process Clause, Colin Miller

Faculty Publications

In Florida v. Harris, the State has asked the Supreme Court to find that a positive alert by a certified narcotics-detection dog is per se sufficient, in and of itself, to establish probable cause for the search of a vehicle. This essay, to be published in conjunction with Leslie Shoebotham's amici brief in Harris, argues that this "credentials alone" conception of probable cause violates the Compulsory Process Clause.

Dipl 6131 Aa Causes Of War, Edislav Manetovic Phd Oct 2012

Dipl 6131 Aa Causes Of War, Edislav Manetovic Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

Why do states go to war? Why do social groups go to war? Major part of this course will be devoted to surveying main conceptual explanations on the causes of war. We will end the course by focusing on a single recent case study - Bosnia. To a large extend the war in Bosnia symbolizes post-Cold War conflicts because it involved numerous actors and because it was the first major peacebuilding attempt conducted by the international community. Two decades since the start of the Bosnian war, the international community is still heavily involved in Bosnia.

Endeavor to actively engage the …
