Clandestine Partnerships?: The Link Between Human Trafficking And Organized Crime In Metropolitan Atlanta, Tara M. Tripp Oct 2012

Clandestine Partnerships?: The Link Between Human Trafficking And Organized Crime In Metropolitan Atlanta, Tara M. Tripp

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

Since the enactment of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000, which directly criminalized human trafficking, research on human trafficking has significantly increased. While recent studies have analyzed trafficking legislation, characteristics of offenders and victims, and types of human trafficking rings, little data has been collected on human trafficking ties to organized crime. Therefore, this research explores human trafficking and its relationship to organized crime through an analysis of public court records. Specifically, the study includes the 20 federal human trafficking cases in metropolitan Atlanta indicted between 2000 and 2012. It was found that 80% of the 20 human trafficking …

Two Essays On The Degree Of Globalization Of A Firm: Measurement, Antecedents, And Consequences, Victor B. Marshall Oct 2012

Two Essays On The Degree Of Globalization Of A Firm: Measurement, Antecedents, And Consequences, Victor B. Marshall

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

In this research I address the question: how global should a firm be? Answering this question requires addressing several related questions. First, what is a global firm, and how does one measure how global a firm is? Second, which firm capabilities are antecedents to firm globalization? And finally, what is the relationship between firm globalization and performance?

I begin by examining Rugman’s (2003, 2005) and Asmussen’s (2009) measures for the globalization of a firm and develop a new, simplified, enhanced measure, the Degree of Globalization (DOG). DOG is an easy to interpret continuous ratio variable that is mathematically and empirically …

The Influence Of Auxiliary Ligands On The Photophysical Characteristics Of A Series Of Ruthenium (Ii) Polypyridyl Complexes, Luke O'Neill, Laura Perdisatt, Christine O'Connor Oct 2012

The Influence Of Auxiliary Ligands On The Photophysical Characteristics Of A Series Of Ruthenium (Ii) Polypyridyl Complexes, Luke O'Neill, Laura Perdisatt, Christine O'Connor

Articles

A series of ruthenium polypyridyl complexes were studied using UV/Vis absorption and luminescence spectroscopy as well as luminescence lifetime determination by time correlated single photon counting (TCSPC). The complexes were characterised with regard to the variation in the electronic band-gap as a result of the sequential variation of the auxiliary ligand 2,2’-bipyridine (bpy), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 2,2’-biquinoline (biq) ligands while the main ligand remained constant for three different main ligand types. Luminescence yields were calculated and correlated with structural and electronic variation. It was found that both the absorption and emission characteristics could be tailored through the systematic variation of …

Salary Inversion In Business Schools: Does A Rising Tide Lift All Boats?, Tom Arnold, Raymond P.H. Fishe, Adam Schwartz Oct 2012

Salary Inversion In Business Schools: Does A Rising Tide Lift All Boats?, Tom Arnold, Raymond P.H. Fishe, Adam Schwartz

Finance Faculty Publications

The paper analyzes AACSB salary survey information from 1979 to 2008. The question addressed in this analysis is whether salary inversion is widespread across the three business disciplines of accounting, economics, and finance. We find limited evidence of mean level inversions, which is concentrated in recent years. Stochastic dominance methods confirm these results. We also develop a measure of salary dominance based on comparing the distribution of reported salaries. This statistic shows a significant trend towards salary inversion in finance and accounting.

Cine Mexicano Y Su Representación Periférica: La Representación De Las Luchas Armadas Contemporáneas, Guillermo Martínez Sotelo

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

El Sujeto De La Lengua Sujeto A La Lengua: Reflexiones Sobre La Dramaturgia Performativa Contemporánea, Stephan Baumgärtel, Miguel Ángel Zamorano, Karen Basaure Oct 2012

El Sujeto De La Lengua Sujeto A La Lengua: Reflexiones Sobre La Dramaturgia Performativa Contemporánea, Stephan Baumgärtel, Miguel Ángel Zamorano, Karen Basaure

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

O Silêncio Do Subalterno Em Menino De Engenho E Bangüê, Olimpia E. Rosenthal Oct 2012

O Silêncio Do Subalterno Em Menino De Engenho E Bangüê, Olimpia E. Rosenthal

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Genetic Characterization Of North American Populations Of The Wheat Curl Mite And Dry Bulb Mite, Gary L. Hein, Roy French, Benjawan Siriwetwiwat, James W. Amrine Oct 2012

Genetic Characterization Of North American Populations Of The Wheat Curl Mite And Dry Bulb Mite, Gary L. Hein, Roy French, Benjawan Siriwetwiwat, James W. Amrine

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The wheat curl mite, Aceria tosichella Keifer, transmits at least three harmful viruses, wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV), high plains virus (HPV), and Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV) to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) throughout the Great Plains. This virus complex is considered to be the most serious disease of winter wheat in the western Great Plains. One component of managing this disease has been developing mite resistance in wheat; however, identification of mite biotypes has complicated deployment and stability of resistance. This biotypic variability in mites and differential virus transmission by different mite populations underscores the need to better understand …

Whose Invention Is It Anyway? Employee Invention-Assignment Agreements And Their Limits, Parker A. Howell Oct 2012

Whose Invention Is It Anyway? Employee Invention-Assignment Agreements And Their Limits, Parker A. Howell

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

Pre-invention assignment provisions have become important and commonplace facets of employment agreements, supplanting common law rules for invention ownership. Yet statutes in seven states—including California, Washington, and Minnesota—restrict invention assignment. These statutes make agreements unenforceable when a worker invents on his or her own time without use of employer resources and the invention does not relate to the employer’s business or the employee’s work. Employers should be ready to argue why a given invention is not excluded from assignment by statute, although judicial decisions suggest many disputed inventions nonetheless belong to the employer. Statutory arguments notwithstanding, employee-inventors may challenge the …

Social Media Policies For Character And Fitness Evaluations, Jessica Belle Oct 2012

Social Media Policies For Character And Fitness Evaluations, Jessica Belle

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

In 2009, Florida became the first U.S. jurisdiction to articulate a Character and Fitness Evaluation (CFE) policy of examining the social media accounts of bar applicants who had demonstrated a history of questionable conduct such as substance abuse or seeking to violently overthrow the U.S. government. This policy may allow access to otherwise legally inaccessible data, which creates a risk of the bar unlawfully considering information protected by applicants’ constitutional rights. Over the past 60 years, the U.S. Supreme Court has split on whether bar organizations may constitutionally deny bar admission to applicants who refuse to answer certain questions on …

Public-Private Cooperation In The Department Of Defense: A Framework For Analysis And Recommendations For Action, Linton Wells Ii, Samuel Bendett Oct 2012

Public-Private Cooperation In The Department Of Defense: A Framework For Analysis And Recommendations For Action, Linton Wells Ii, Samuel Bendett

Defense Horizons

In 2010, a National Defense University (NDU) research project called TIDES1 (Transformative Innovation for Development and Emergency Support) was invited to partner with a company to produce a tradeshow about humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions and related capabilities. Despite senior-level Department of Defense (DOD) guidance to pursue public-private partnerships, DOD attorneys told TIDES managers to reject the agreement. Differing legal interpretations of the word partner generated concern that the proposed partnership could create an impermissible perception of government endorsement of a private company. Even though it would have advanced the government’s mission and promoted efficiency, a variety of obstacles …

Quantitative Analysis Of Methangenic Community In Anaerobic Digesters And Its Response To Freeze Drying And Exposure To Oxygen, Keerthi Cherukuri Oct 2012

Quantitative Analysis Of Methangenic Community In Anaerobic Digesters And Its Response To Freeze Drying And Exposure To Oxygen, Keerthi Cherukuri

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Methanogens are integral to carbon cycling, catalyzing the production of methane and carbon dioxide, both potent greenhouse gases. Methane is produced in a wide variety of highly reduced anaerobic environments, as well as by degradation of organic compounds in industrial and municipal wastewater. This process is carried out by the concerted activity of an interdependent microbial community, composed of Bacteria and Archaea, the later including methanogens which complete the final step and produce methane and carbon dioxide. Methanogenesis is often the rate limiting step and is sensitive to processing imbalances. Therefore, an understanding of the microbial community structure and dynamics …
