3d Differentiation Of Neural Stem Cells In Macroporous Photopolymerizable Hydrogel Scaffolds, Nic Leipzig Oct 2012

3d Differentiation Of Neural Stem Cells In Macroporous Photopolymerizable Hydrogel Scaffolds, Nic Leipzig

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

Neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs) are the stem cell of the adult central nervous system (CNS). These cells are able to differentiate into the major cell types found in the CNS (neurons, oligodendrocytes, astrocytes), thus NSPCs are the mechanism by which the adult CNS could potentially regenerate after injury or disorder. Microenviromental factors are critical for guiding NSPC differentiation and are thus important for neural tissue engineering. In this study, D-mannitol crystals were mixed with photocrosslinkable methacrylamide chitosan (MAC) as a porogen to enhance pore size during hydrogel formation. D-mannitol was admixed to MAC at 5, 10 and 20 wt% D-mannitol …

Fabrication And Degradation Of Electrospun Scaffolds From L-Tyrosine Based Polyurethane Blends For Tissue Engineering Applications, Lingyun Liu Oct 2012

Fabrication And Degradation Of Electrospun Scaffolds From L-Tyrosine Based Polyurethane Blends For Tissue Engineering Applications, Lingyun Liu

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

It is important to control the degradation rate of a tissue-engineered scaffold so that the scaffold will degrade in an appropriate matching rate as the tissue cells grow in. A set of potential tissue engineering scaffolds with controllable rates of degradation were fabricated from blends of two biocompatible, biodegradable L-tyrosine-based polyurethanes (PEG1000-HDI-DTH and PCL1250-HDI-DTH) using the electrospinning process. The scaffolds were characterized by mat morphology, fiber diameter, diameter distribution, pore size, and hydrolytic degradation behavior. The majority of the scaffolds, despite having radically different chemical compositions, possessed no statistical difference with pore sizes and fiber diameters. The degradation pattern observed …

Draining The Serbonian Bog: Originalism And The Need For Temporary Takings By Floodwaters, Brian D. Lee Oct 2012

Draining The Serbonian Bog: Originalism And The Need For Temporary Takings By Floodwaters, Brian D. Lee

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In May 2011, approximately 130,000 acres of Missouri farmland were flooded when the United States Army Corps of Engineers crevassed the levee protecting that land from the waters of the Mississippi River.  The owners of these lands, however, were unable to obtain compensation from the federal government pursuant to the Takings Clause of the United States Constitution because the flooding was not permanent or certain to recur.  This treatment of temporary floodwaters is in stark contrast to the takings analysis conducted when other temporary government actions are examined.

This Comment argues that temporary flooding should be treated exactly as other …

The On Track Survey 2012: The Destinations Of School Leavers In Victoria. Statewide Report, Sheldon Rothman, Catherine Underwood

Vocational, adult and professional education research

The On Track project was initiated in 2003. Since the first large-scale survey in that year, around 385,000 school leavers have participated in the On Track surveys, providing valuable insights into their post-school destinations and pathways. The On Track survey was conducted in April–May 2012 by the Social Research Centre (SRC) in collaboration with the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). This involved a short telephone survey of school leavers who had earlier agreed to participate. Separate questionnaires were used for Year 12 or equivalent completers and early school leavers. This report is based on data from telephone surveys of …

The Pierre Auger Observatory is exploring the potential of the radio detection technique to study extensive air showers induced by ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) addresses both technological and scientific aspects of the radio technique. A first phase of AERA has been operating since September 2010 with detector stations observing radio signals at frequencies between 30 and 80 MHz. In this paper we present comparative studies to identify and optimize the antenna design for the final configuration of AERA consisting of 160 individual radio detector stations. The transient nature of the air shower signal requires …

Increasing Access For Economically Disadvantaged Students: The Nsf/Csem & S-Stem Programs At Louisiana State University, Zakiya S. Wilson, Sitharama S. Iyengar, Su Seng Pang, Isiah M. Warner, Candace A. Luces

Faculty Publications

Increasing college degree attainment for students from disadvantaged backgrounds is a prominent component of numerous state and federal legislation focused on higher education. In 1999, the National Science Foundation (NSF) instituted the "Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarships" (CSEMS) program; this initiative was designed to provide greater access and support to academically talented students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Originally intended to provide financial support to lower income students, this NSF program also advocated that additional professional development and advising would be strategies to increase undergraduate persistence to graduation. This innovative program for economically disadvantaged students was extended in 2004 to …

Polar Opposites: Fine-Tuning Cytokinesis Through Sin Asymmetry, Alyssa E. Johnson, Dannel Mccollum, Kathleen L. Gould Oct 2012

Polar Opposites: Fine-Tuning Cytokinesis Through Sin Asymmetry, Alyssa E. Johnson, Dannel Mccollum, Kathleen L. Gould

Faculty Publications

Mitotic exit and cell division must be spatially and temporally integrated to facilitate equal division of genetic material between daughter cells. In the fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, a spindle pole body (SPB) localized signaling cascade termed the septation initiation network (SIN) couples mitotic exit with cytokinesis. The SIN is controlled at many levels to ensure that cytokinesis is executed once per cell cycle and only after cells segregate their DNA. An interesting facet of the SIN is that its activity is asymmetric on the two SPBs during anaphase; however, how and why the SIN is asymmetric has remained elusive. Many …

Mexican Rice Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) Injury To Corn Greater Than To Sorghum And Sugarcane Under Field Conditions, Allan T. Showler, Blake E. Wilson, Thomas E. Reagan Oct 2012

Mexican Rice Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) Injury To Corn Greater Than To Sorghum And Sugarcane Under Field Conditions, Allan T. Showler, Blake E. Wilson, Thomas E. Reagan

Faculty Publications

The Mexican rice borer, Eoreuma loflini (Dyar) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is the key pest of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) in Texas; it can attack several grassy crop and noncrop host plants and has spread into Louisiana. Through small-plot, commercial field, and pheromone trap experiments, this study demonstrates that the pest uses corn, Zea mays L., more than sugarcane and sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, but when corn is harvested in late summer, injury to nearby sugarcane strongly increases during the next ≈2 mo to harvest. Corn was more infested than sugarcane and sorghum in commercial fields regardless of whether sampling occurred on …

Evaluation Of Three Bait Materials And Their Food Transfer Efficiency In Formosan Subterranean Termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), Cai Wang, Gregg Henderson

Faculty Publications

The consumption and food transfer efficiency of two commercially used termite bait materials, southern yellow pine wood and cardboard, and one potential bait material, maize (Zeamays L.) cob, were evaluated for use against the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), in the laboratory. In the no-choice test, the consumption of wood and cob was similar and significantly more than cardboard. Tunneling under the food sources was similar. In the two-choice test, the consumption was cob > wood, wood > cardboard, cob = cardboard, and tunneling under these choices was cob = wood, wood = cardboard, cob > cardboard. In the three-choice …

Purity And Decomposition Theorems For Staggered Sheaves, Pramod N. Achar, David Treumann Oct 2012

Purity And Decomposition Theorems For Staggered Sheaves, Pramod N. Achar, David Treumann

Faculty Publications

Two major results in the theory of ℓ-adic mixed constructible sheaves are the purity theorem (every simple perverse sheaf is pure) and the decomposition theorem (every pure object in the derived category is a direct sum of shifts of simple perverse sheaves). In this paper, we prove analogues of these results for coherent sheaves. Specifically, we work with staggered sheaves, which form the heart of a certain t-structure on the derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves. We prove, under some reasonable hypotheses, that every simple staggered sheaf is pure, and that every pure complex of coherent sheaves is a direct …

We present interferometric angular diameter measurements of 21 low-mass, K- and M-dwarfs made with the CHARA Array. This sample is enhanced by adding a collection of radius measurements published in the literature to form a total data set of 33K-M-dwarfs with diameters measured to better than 5%. We use these data in combination with the Hipparcos parallax and new measurements of the star's bolometric flux to compute absolute luminosities, linear radii, and effective temperatures for the stars. We develop empirical relations for K0 to M4 main-sequence stars that link the stellar temperature, radius, and luminosity to the observed (B - …

Tearing Up The Disk: How Black Holes Accrete, Chris Nixon, Andrew King, Daniel Price, Juhan Frank Oct 2012

Tearing Up The Disk: How Black Holes Accrete, Chris Nixon, Andrew King, Daniel Price, Juhan Frank

Faculty Publications

We show that in realistic cases of accretion in active galactic nuclei or stellar-mass X-ray binaries, the Lense-Thirring effect breaks the central regions of tilted accretion disks around spinning black holes into a set of distinct planes with only tenuous flows connecting them. If the original misalignment of the outer disk to the spin axis of the hole is 45° ≲ θ ≲ 135°, as in 70% of randomly oriented accretion events, the continued precession of these disks sets up partially counterrotating gas flows. This drives rapid infall as angular momentum is canceled and gas attempts to circularize at smaller …

Molecular Phylogeny And Insular Biogeography Of The Lowland Tailorbirds Of Southeast Asia (Cisticolidae: Orthotomus), Frederick H. Sheldon, Carl H. Oliveros, Sabrina S. Taylor, Bailey Mckay, Haw Chuan Lim, Mustafa Abdul Rahman, Herman Mays, Robert G. Moyle

Faculty Publications

The lowland tailorbirds of Southeast Asia (Orthotomus) offer an excellent opportunity for comparative biogeography because of their diversity in the Greater Sunda and Philippine islands. We reconstructed the phylogeny of all species in the genus using maximum likelihood, Bayesian, and coalescent methods on DNA sequences of three gene segments: an autosomal intron (TGF), a Z-linked intron (MUSK), and a mitochondrial coding gene (ND2). Although resolution is low in parts of the phylogeny, several well defined clades emerge. When considered in light of distribution, these clades indicate that the Greater Sunda and Philippine islands were occupied early in Orthotomus history by …

Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus, which are native to estuaries globally, are agents of seafood-borne or wound infections, both potentially fatal. Like all vibrios autochthonous to coastal regions, their abundance varies with changes in environmental parameters. Sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface height (SSH), and chlorophyll have been shown to be predictors of zooplankton and thus factors linked to vibrio populations. The contribution of salinity, conductivity, turbidity, and dissolved organic carbon to the incidence and distribution of Vibrio spp. has also been reported. Here, a multicoastal, 21-month study was conducted to determine relationships between environmental parameters and V. parahaemolyticus and …

Lifetime Of Combustion-Generated Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals On Zn(Ii)O And Other Transition Metal Oxides, Eric Vejerano, Slawo Lomnicki, Barry Dellinger

Faculty Publications

Previous studies indicated that Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals (EPFRs) are formed in the post-flame, cool zone of combustion. They result from the chemisorption of gas-phase products of incomplete combustion (particularly hydroxyl- and chlorine-substituted aromatics) on Cu(ii)O, Fe(iii) 2O3, and Ni(ii)O domains of particulate matter (fly ash or soot particles). This study reports our detailed laboratory investigation on the lifetime of EPFRs on Zn(ii)O/silica surface. Similarly, as in the case of other transition metals, chemisorption of the adsorbate on the Zn(ii)O surface and subsequent transfer of electron from the adsorbate to the metal forms a surface-bound EPFR and a reduced metal …
