Art As A Cure: Analyzing Healthcare Treatment For The Mentally Ill Through The Lens Of Art Therapy Programs In Dakar, Senegal, Sofia Porter-Castro Oct 2012

Art As A Cure: Analyzing Healthcare Treatment For The Mentally Ill Through The Lens Of Art Therapy Programs In Dakar, Senegal, Sofia Porter-Castro

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Mental illness is a malady that affects roughly 2.3 million people in Senegal ("Statistics by Country” 2012), but the wide and sometimes opposing range of healing practices suggests that the attitudes surrounding mental illness are still largely contested. This is especially true in Senegal’s capital, where advances in medicine in big city hospitals are growing while ties to traditional beliefs and practices remain strong. Alternative therapies, such as art therapy, provide an opportunity for practitioners to explore different techniques for treating the mentally ill while still integrating elements of the local culture. It is precisely this integration that this paper …

Educación Intercultural Y Bilingüe Para Todos: Espoleando Para Un Quiebre Potencial En Las Normas De La Sociedad Chilena, Elizabeth Bickley

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Chile, Menos La Solidaridad: El Presente Y Futuro De Desigualdad Económica En Chile, Carolyn Lenderts

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Swimways: Protecting Paddlefish Through Movement-Centered Management, Brenda M. Pracheil, Mark A. Pegg, Larkin A. Powell, Gerald Mestl

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Attempts to mitigate lack of formal interjurisdictional paddlefish management have been made in the United States through the Mississippi River Interstate Cooperative Resource Association (MICRA). We used 1988–2009 data from the MICRA paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) stock assessment database—a database containing mark–recapture and biometric information on more than 30,000 individually marked wild paddlefish and more than 2 million hatchery-origin paddlefish—to estimate survival and movement across large and potentially biologically relevant spatial scales. Paddlefish frequently moved between political jurisdictions with differing conservation strategies and harvest regulations and showed differences in survival parameter estimates throughout their range. We argue that the degree of …

Is Complementarity The Right Approach For The International Criminal Court’S Crime Of Aggression - Considering The Problem Of Overzealous National Court Prosecutions, Jennifer Trahan Oct 2012

Is Complementarity The Right Approach For The International Criminal Court’S Crime Of Aggression - Considering The Problem Of Overzealous National Court Prosecutions, Jennifer Trahan

Cornell International Law Journal

At the first Review Conference on the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Assembly of States Parties to the ICC adopted an amendment defining the crime of aggression and conditions for the ICC's exercise of jurisdiction over the crime. Because the definition will be incorporated into the existing framework of the Rome Statute, the crime will be subject to the "complementarity" provision contained therein. That provision specifies that a case is "inadmissible" before the ICC if there are national investigations and/or prosecutions, unless the state demonstrates an unwillingness or inability to investigate or prosecute the case. By …

[Accepted Article Manuscript Version (Postprint)] Track Me To Track Us: Leveraging Short Range Wireless Technologies For Enabling Energy Efficient Wi-Fi-Based Localization, Mohamed Abdellatif, Abderrahmen Mtibaa, Khaled Harras

Computer Science Faculty Works

Given the success of outdoor tracking via GPS and the rise of real-time context-aware services, users will soon rely on applications that require higher granularity indoor localization. This need is further manifested in countries like Qatar, where various social and business activities occur indoors. Wi-Fi-based indoor localization is one of the most researched techniques due to its ubiquitous deployment and acceptable accuracy for a wide range of applications. However, we do not witness such techniques widely deployed mainly due to their high demand on energy, which is a precious commodity in mobile devices. We propose an energy-efficient indoor localization system …

Analysis Of Music Note Patterns Via Markov Chains, Ala'a Wadi Oct 2012

Analysis Of Music Note Patterns Via Markov Chains, Ala'a Wadi

Senior Honors Projects

This is a presentation of a novel method for measuring the distance between two seemingly analogous fragments of music, as deemed by human perception. This is an approach entirely based on coarse-grained and primitive representations of the order of the notes that make up the songs. Through the use of a simplified Markov chain analysis, transition matrices are derived for each music piece and compared through linear algebraic techniques.

We begin by applying the method to two distinctive, intrinsic, and familiar compositions, “Row Your Boat” and “Happy Birthday”. We will advance to more complicated compositions that have garnered attention for …

African Americans In Honors Programs, Sarah Rigsby, Destiny Savage, Jorge Wellmann

Research & Program Evaluation (CNS598)

This qualitative study aims to explore the reasons why African American students have low involvement in the Western Kentucky University Honors College program and its’ initiatives. Findings show that this low level of involvement is the consequence of a perceived lack of diversity within the Honors College, a lack of diversity in Honors College recruitment initiatives and materials, a feeling of not being accepted by their Caucasian peers, high levels of participation in and commitment to activities outside the Honors College community, and no minority community within the Honors College. Accordingly, African American Honors College students do not have high …

Serotonin System Gene Polymorphisms Are Associated With Impulsivity In A Context Dependent Manner, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Christa C. Christ, Krista B. Highland Oct 2012

Serotonin System Gene Polymorphisms Are Associated With Impulsivity In A Context Dependent Manner, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Christa C. Christ, Krista B. Highland

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Impulsivity is a risk factor for adverse outcomes and characterizes several psychiatric disorders and risk for suicide. There is strong evidence that genetic variation influences individual differences in impulsivity, but the details are not yet understood. There is growing interest in better understanding the context dependency of genetic effects that is reflected in studies examining gender specificity, gene × environment interaction and epistasis (gene-gene interaction). In a cross-sectional study we examined whether polymorphisms in six serotonin system candidate genes and the experience of early life trauma (age 0–12) were associated with individual differences in impulsivity in a nonclinical sample of …

Basketball Market Efficiency And The Big Dog Bias, Ladd Kochman, Randy Goodwin Oct 2012

Basketball Market Efficiency And The Big Dog Bias, Ladd Kochman, Randy Goodwin

Faculty Articles

A betting rule is devised to profit from an alleged unwillingness of strong favorites in the National Basketball Association to cover large point spreads. Imaginary wagers placed on NBA underdogs awarded 10+ points by Las Vegas oddsmakers produced a significantly nonrandom wins-to-bets ratio of 53.4 percent during the five consecutive seasons ending in 2007. The failure to generate a W/B ratio of at least 55.4 percent over the 758 games meeting our point spread constraint precludes any claim of profitability.
