The Humanistic, Fideistic Philosophy Of Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560), Charles William Peterson Oct 2012

The Humanistic, Fideistic Philosophy Of Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560), Charles William Peterson

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation examines the way Philip Melanchthon, author of the Augsburg Confession and Martin Luther's closest co-worker, sought to establish the relationship between faith and reason in the cradle of the Lutheran tradition, Wittenberg University. While Melanchthon is widely recognized to have played a crucial role in the Reformation of the Church in the sixteenth century as well as in the Renaissance in Northern Europe, he has in general received relatively little scholarly attention, few have attempted to explore his philosophy in depth, and those who have examined his philosophical work have come to contradictory or less than helpful conclusions …

Photochemical Eilmination Reactions Via Zwitterionic Intermediates Generated By Electrocyclic Ring Closures, Majher Ibna Mannan Sarker Oct 2012

Photochemical Eilmination Reactions Via Zwitterionic Intermediates Generated By Electrocyclic Ring Closures, Majher Ibna Mannan Sarker

Dissertations (1934 -)

The research focuses on the design of photoremovable protecting groups that can be used to deprotect biological substrates of an organic compound by photolysis. The deprotection of the protecting group via photolysis requires heterolysis of a bond to the substrate. Heterolysis of a C-O or C-S σ-bonds in a zwitterionic intermediate is proposed. The photochemical electrocyclic reactions studied involve acrylanilides, benzothiophene carboxanilides, and N-(9-oxothioxanthenyl) benzothiophene carboxamides. α,β-Unsaturated anilides bearing leaving groups at the allylic position of the α-methylacrylamide group undergo photochemical electrocyclic ring closure with release of leaving group which could occur directly from a photochemically produced zwitterionic intermediate or …

Number Sense Mediated By Mathematics Self-Concept In Impacting Middle School Mathematics Achievement, Lara K. Geronime Oct 2012

Number Sense Mediated By Mathematics Self-Concept In Impacting Middle School Mathematics Achievement, Lara K. Geronime

Dissertations (1934 -)

The purpose of the current study was to extend the research on number sense to the middle school level and to simultaneously consider socioemotional elements related to the construct at this developmental stage. Its genesis was initially rooted in an ongoing and dramatic emphasis by U.S. policymakers, researchers, and educators on improving mathematics achievement in order to compete globally in technology and innovation. Despite debates about optimal curriculum and instruction, tremendous support exists for the construct of number sense. However, middle school research examining the phenomena has been limited to intervention protocols targeting specific skillsets and better measurement of its …

Corticosterone-Induced Potentiation Of Cocaine Seeking: A Potential Role For Organic Cation Transporter 3, Evan N. Graf Oct 2012

Corticosterone-Induced Potentiation Of Cocaine Seeking: A Potential Role For Organic Cation Transporter 3, Evan N. Graf

Dissertations (1934 -)

While it is known that stress plays a role in the relapse of cocaine-seeking behavior, recent studies demonstrate that stress may be acting as a "stage setter" rather than directly triggering further cocaine use. This model suggests stimuli that do not normally evoke relapse under stress-free conditions may result in drug seeking when the exposure occurs under stressful conditions. In this study, we examined the corticosterone-dependent potentiation of cocaine-induced reinstatement by a stressor, electric footshock (EFS), in rats following cocaine self-administration and extinction. We found that in rats with a history of drug exposure under low intake conditions, footshock alone …

Semi-Automatic Simulation Initialization By Mining Structured And Unstructured Data Formats From Local And Web Data Sources, Olcay Sahin Oct 2012

Semi-Automatic Simulation Initialization By Mining Structured And Unstructured Data Formats From Local And Web Data Sources, Olcay Sahin

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Initialization is one of the most important processes for obtaining successful results from a simulation. However, initialization is a challenge when 1) a simulation requires hundreds or even thousands of input parameters or 2) re-initializing the simulation due to different initial conditions or runtime errors. These challenges lead to the modeler spending more time initializing a simulation and may lead to errors due to poor input data.

This thesis proposes two semi-automatic simulation initialization approaches that provide initialization using data mining from structured and unstructured data formats from local and web data sources. First, the System Initialization with Retrieval (SIR) …

Orientation-Invariant Ecg-Based Virtual Pathology Stethoscope Tracking For Standardized Patient Heart Auscultation, Nahom B. Kidane Oct 2012

Orientation-Invariant Ecg-Based Virtual Pathology Stethoscope Tracking For Standardized Patient Heart Auscultation, Nahom B. Kidane

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Cardiac auscultation (CA), the act of listening to the heart sounds, is a critical physician's skill that provides substantial information for diagnosing many cardiovascular disorders; therefore, competent training can be a key for accurate and reliable diagnosis. The teaching of CA has been an area of recognized importance since the inception of the stethoscope. However, recent changes in health-care, such as limited student access to patients and higher reliance on competing technologies have made it challenging to teach bedside CA techniques.

Over the past few decades, standardized patients (SPs), individuals trained to portray real patients, have been widely used for …

Life History Of Stranded Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) In Virginia, Margaret Cook Lynott Oct 2012

Life History Of Stranded Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) In Virginia, Margaret Cook Lynott

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Little is known about the life history and overall ecology of bottlenose dolphins that strand in Virginia. In this study, I examined archived life history samples and stranding data from bottlenose dolphins found in Virginia waters to (1) develop growth curves based on ages from sectioned teeth, (2) document characteristics of male and female reproductive organs, and (3) define the relationship between age/length and presence of neonatal characteristics during the first year of life. The Gompertz growth model provided the best fit of growth data for stranded T. truncatus in Virginia. Length at birth and asymptotic length for males were …

Observation Of A Self-Limiting, Shear-Induced Turbulent Inversion Layer Above Marine Stratocumulus, J. Katzwinkel, H. Siebert, R. A. Shaw Oct 2012

Observation Of A Self-Limiting, Shear-Induced Turbulent Inversion Layer Above Marine Stratocumulus, J. Katzwinkel, H. Siebert, R. A. Shaw

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

High-resolution measurements of thermodynamic, microphysical, and turbulence properties inside a turbulent inversion layer above a marine stratocumulus cloud layer are presented. The measurements are performed with the helicopter-towed measurement payload Airborne Cloud Turbulence Observation System (ACTOS), which allows for sampling with low true air speeds and steep profiles through cloud top. Vertical profiles show that the turbulent inversion layer consists of clear air above the cloud top, with nearly linear profiles of potential temperature, horizontal wind speed, absolute humidity, and concentration of interstitial aerosol. The layer is turbulent, with an energy dissipation rate nearly the same as that in the …

Mandatory Predispute Consumer Arbitration, Structural Bias, And Incentivizing Procedural Safeguards, Nancy A. Welsh Oct 2012

Mandatory Predispute Consumer Arbitration, Structural Bias, And Incentivizing Procedural Safeguards, Nancy A. Welsh

Faculty Scholarship

Within the past several decades, there has been an explosion in the creation, institutionalization and use of “alternative” dispute resolution procedures. Mandatory predispute arbitration has generated the most controversy because it appears beset with structural bias. The recent cases of AT&T Mobility LLC v. Concepcion and Compucredit Corp. v. Greenwood have raised additional concerns as the Supreme Court has announced that corporations can force consumers to arbitrate their private and statutory claims and give up their rights to pursue class relief. This Article begins by arguing that the Supreme Court’s enthusiastic embrace of mandatory predispute arbitration should be understood primarily …

Health Insurance And Federalism-In-Fact, Radha A. Pathak, Brendan S. Maher Oct 2012

Health Insurance And Federalism-In-Fact, Radha A. Pathak, Brendan S. Maher

Faculty Scholarship

The constitutional legitimacy of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (“ACA”) received substantial attention. Less examined has been the legislation’s sub-constitutional effect on the regulatory power that states can and might exercise. Regarding a state's ability to promulgate "sickness rules," (those legal rules pertaining to the conditions or treatment an insurance policy covers) and "non-sickness" rules (those legal rules pertaining to insurance other than sickness rules), we scrutinize the ACA itself and contrast it with the other most significant statute governing private health insurance, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (“ERISA”). The authors would like to thank …

The Prospective Role Of Temporary Protected Status: How Discretionary Designation Has Hindered The United States' Ability To Protect Those Displaced By Environmental Disaster, Chelsea Krombel Oct 2012

The Prospective Role Of Temporary Protected Status: How Discretionary Designation Has Hindered The United States' Ability To Protect Those Displaced By Environmental Disaster, Chelsea Krombel

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Climate change, increasing population density, and unsustainable land use practices continue to contribute to the frequency and exacerbate the impact of environmental disasters. The world population continues to grow, particularly in areas in which the environment is unstable or prone to natural disasters. In 2010 and 2011, alone, earthquakes in Chile, Haiti, Japan, and Turkey led to widespread damage, thousands of casualties, and subsequent international relief efforts, many of which continue, today. For foreign nationals who have been displaced or must return to an area destabilized by environmental disasters, there remain few opportunities for protection. Unlike refugees, for whom an …

Lessons From Greco-Multilateralism For Creditors, Georgakopoulos Oct 2012

Lessons From Greco-Multilateralism For Creditors, Georgakopoulos

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Sovereign insolvencies cause enormous losses to lenders, huge disruptions in the debtor's population and its welfare, and extraordinary mobilization of international organizations, such as the International Monetary Fund ("IMF") and the European Central Bank ("ECB"), which were designed to safeguard the financial system. Greece's insolvency displays all these phenomena, but it also demonstrates the improvement that would be available from a sovereign insolvency regime following three simple principles: (1) post-insolvency creditors should have priority; (2) creditors should vote by classes; and (3) restructuring should be conditional on the debtor's compliance with reforms.

Part II offers some historical anecdotes about the …

Dreyfus, Laicite And The Burqa, C.M.A. Mccauliff

Connecticut Journal of International Law

A Muslim woman wearing a face covering, a hijab or burqa, wants to go to her job in Paris, but a recent statute prevents her from setting out for work dressed as she is. The state and the right to religious freedom conflict in many countries but perhaps no more famously now than in France. France has officially embraced secularism, larcit6, as a fundamental value along with libertd, igalitd, fratemitd. Lalcit6 suggests that only characteristics the French hold in common constitute society.' Differences are masked and relegated to the private sphere, largely inadmissible in public discourse. 2 The disguise of …

The Right To Leave Any Country Including Your Own In International Law, Dimitry Kochenov Oct 2012

The Right To Leave Any Country Including Your Own In International Law, Dimitry Kochenov

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Nationality and territory are connected in many ways.' The classical understanding of sovereignty is traditionally rooted in the exercise of authority over people and place. A necessary consequence of understanding the world as inhabited by sovereign countries in charge of separate societies divided by unambiguous borders is the perpetuation of a clear distinction between what is "inside" and what is "outside," both in terms of territory and in terms of people who either "belong here" or "not."2 This vision of the world, which is largely based on the de Vattelian tradition of international relations and law,3 is very much simplified, …

Strengths And Weaknesses In The Protection Of The Internally Displaced Persons In Sub-Saharan Africa, Cristiano D'Orsi Oct 2012

Strengths And Weaknesses In The Protection Of The Internally Displaced Persons In Sub-Saharan Africa, Cristiano D'Orsi

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Since the 1970s a relatively new phenomenon emerged in the human, world panorama: the plight of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), a phenomenon which has significantly affected the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region in particular. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee (UNHCR), the number of IDPs protected or assisted by the agency, including people in IDP-like situations in the four macro-regions composing the SSA (Central Africa-Great Lakes, East and Horn of Africa, Southern Africa, Western Africa) in 2010 amounted to 6,230,071 individuals against the 4,376,376 million in Asia and 3,672,054 in Latin America and the Caribbean.' Therefore, only by …

The Gender Bind: Men As Inauthentic Caregivers , Kelli K. García Oct 2012

The Gender Bind: Men As Inauthentic Caregivers , Kelli K. García

Duke Journal of Gender Law & Policy

Almost twenty years after the enactment of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), an ostensibly gender-neutral statute, companies are still less likely to offer paternity leave than they are to offer maternity leave. Although women have traditionally faced discrimination in the workplace because they are viewed as inauthentic workers—not fully committed to paid employment—men face the corresponding problem and are viewed as inauthentic caregivers. Men who seek family leave transgress gender norms and risk workplace discrimination and stereotyping. This article makes explicit how the social and cultural contexts in which the FMLA is applied interact to maintain the status …
