A Critique Of Political Self-Deception: Kant And Freud At The Edge Of Critical Theory, James A. Manos Aug 2012

A Critique Of Political Self-Deception: Kant And Freud At The Edge Of Critical Theory, James A. Manos

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

In the spirit of Kantian critique this dissertation pursues the enlightenment project of examining the limits of reason and its political ramifications. Beginning from the claim that psychoanalysis is the inheritor of the Kantian project, this dissertation argues the limits of political reason lie beyond the concepts of overcoming and mastery. While traditionally this conversation has been occupied with the concept of ideology, this dissertation draws on the Freudian concept of self-deception. It contends the concept of ideology contains the seeds of its own overcoming, and thus cannot represent the limits of political reason. In contrast to ideology, this dissertation …

Investigation Of Spillover Effect To Enhance Hydrogen Storage, Sarah C. Corrigan, Lin Simpson, Thomas Gennett Aug 2012

Investigation Of Spillover Effect To Enhance Hydrogen Storage, Sarah C. Corrigan, Lin Simpson, Thomas Gennett

STAR Program Research Presentations

Hydrogen is an attractive energy option because of its low
environmental impact, but a critical problem is its low energy
density, which makes it difficult to store. For example, the US
Department of Energy (DOE) hydrogen plan for fuel cell powered
vehicles requires a gravimetric density of 6.5 wt%. There are several
existing hydrogen storage methods, including compressed gas,
liquefaction, metal hydrides, and physisorption, but at present, none
of these technologies comes close to achieving the targets set by the
DOE. Although chemical storage methods have been claimed to be the
most promising hydrogen storage technology, and activated carbons the …

Determining The Elemental Composition Of Naturally Reduced Sediments At Old Rifle Aquifers, Don Pham, John Bargar, Noémie Janot Aug 2012

Determining The Elemental Composition Of Naturally Reduced Sediments At Old Rifle Aquifers, Don Pham, John Bargar, Noémie Janot

STAR Program Research Presentations

Uranium is one of the most common and problematic contaminants at the Department of Energy legacy sites. The level of oxidative uranium, U(VI), in groundwater exceeds that of EPA standards and remains persistent. The goal of this research is to study the geochemistry of uranium in the aquifer and understand the underlining cause of the persistence of uranium plumes in groundwater. In this study, we used X-Ray fluorescence spectroscopy to determine the elemental composition of sediments collected at a former uranium mining site, Old Rifle (Colorado). The XRF results show that the naturally reduced sediments contain higher concentrations of uranium …

High School Horticulture Curriculum, Margaret Maratsos Aug 2012

High School Horticulture Curriculum, Margaret Maratsos

Horticulture and Crop Science

Horticulture is just one of the many topics covered in a high school agriculture curriculum, and yet, there are very few lesson plans or resources available to teachers for these classes specifically. The objectives of this project were to compile a set of lesson plans, lab plans, and tests that would emphasize interactive and investigative learning. The lesson plans were written in such a way that they reflected a certain set of standards, set down by the state of California, and were meant to serve as a bare outline of topics that would be discussed within a week’s worth of …

Investigating An Afterschool Program For Black Teenage Males Designed To Increase Self-Efficacy, Marvin Lee Byrd Aug 2012

Investigating An Afterschool Program For Black Teenage Males Designed To Increase Self-Efficacy, Marvin Lee Byrd

Dissertations

This is a study of the experiences of Black male teenagers in an after-school program designed to increase self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is the measure of one‘s confidence in their capacity to achieve an ultimate goal. Inequality has proven to be a cyclical state-of-being that plagues families from one generation to another. In many instances, Black families find themselves in this cycle of inequality. Education seems to be a factor in breaking the cycle. This study was developed under the belief that there are also qualitative components that must be considered when it comes to erasing the gap between minority and white …

Best Practices For Student Success On The Act, Grant Coday Boyer Aug 2012

Best Practices For Student Success On The Act, Grant Coday Boyer

Dissertations

Large achievement gaps have been found in ACT scores between high schools throughout the same state and in comparisons between states. In Missouri, four public high schools have consistently scored four points higher than the Missouri average for years 2007-2011. States, such as Nebraska, Minnesota, and Iowa, have shown consistent above average scores as compared to states with similar participation numbers throughout the nation. Schmoker (2006) believed that due to the existing culture of schools and school leadership, learning from others’ successes is often discouraged; therefore, this study was conducted in an attempt to discover the best practices used in …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Works

We review some facts about rank two arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay bundles on quintic threefolds. In particular, we separate them into seventeen natural classes, only fourteen of which can appear on a general quintic. We discuss some enumerative problems arising from these. © 2012 Versita Warsaw and Springer-Verlag Wien.

Parent And Family Engagement: The Missing Piece In Urban Education Reform, Sonya D. Horsford, Tonia Faye Holmes-Sutton Aug 2012

Parent And Family Engagement: The Missing Piece In Urban Education Reform, Sonya D. Horsford, Tonia Faye Holmes-Sutton

Lincy Institute Reports and Briefs

Parent and family engagement in the educational lives of children and youth positively influence student learning and achievement. While this connection may seem obvious, varying ideals of parent engagement limit the ways in which school communities understand, encourage, and benefit from meaningful school‐home‐community interactions. This is frequently the case in culturally diverse, urban communities where education reform has focused heavily on high‐stakes testing, teacher accountability, and school choice, but less on the fragile connections that often exist between schools and the families they serve. The purpose of this policy brief is to review selected research on parent involvement and expand …

Obesity And Outcomes Of Bariatric Surgery: A Focus On Patients With Postoperative Substance Use Disorders, Melissa Pulcini Aug 2012

Obesity And Outcomes Of Bariatric Surgery: A Focus On Patients With Postoperative Substance Use Disorders, Melissa Pulcini

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Recent evidence suggesting post-Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery patients are at an increased risk for developing substance use disorders (SUDs) has brought to light the importance of understanding how the postoperative development of a SUD may affect weight loss and psychosocial outcomes. The present investigation used a quasi- experimental, non- equivalent, matched pair between subjects group design to compare these outcomes in post-RYGB patients in inpatient treatment for SUDs with post-RYGB patients who reported no significant post-surgical substance-related problems. Participants were matched on sex, age, and time since surgery. Average weight losses of the two groups were not significantly different, …

Seeing Is Evolving: Biocultural Evolution Of Refractive Error And Stone Tool Industries, Erin Mcquillan-Hicks Aug 2012

Seeing Is Evolving: Biocultural Evolution Of Refractive Error And Stone Tool Industries, Erin Mcquillan-Hicks

Anthropology Undergraduate Senior Theses

While previous studies have examined different aspects of hominin Biocultural evolution and stone tools, this project will consider the role which vision might have had in tool production. Paralleling Key and Lycett's line of argument, we believe that vision would have played just as integral a role in producing an ideal cutting tool as precision gripping. If a certain type of vision was "adaptive" to stone tool synthesis, then this would explain its frequency in modern human populations. Consequently, this study will attempt to answer why there is such a significant number of individuals possessing seemingly maladaptive visual errors in …

Coastal Hurricane Damage Assessment Via Wavelet Transform Of Remotely Sensed Imagery, Ricky Carl Crowsey Aug 2012

Coastal Hurricane Damage Assessment Via Wavelet Transform Of Remotely Sensed Imagery, Ricky Carl Crowsey

Dissertations

This dissertation uses post storm imagery processed using wavelet transforms to investigate the capability of wavelet transform-based methods to classify post storm damage of residential areas. Five level Haar, Meyer, Symlets, and Coiflets wavelet transform decompositions of the post storm imagery are inputs to damage classification models of post hurricane and tornado damage. Hurricanes Ike, Rita, Katrina, and Ivan are examined as are the 2011 Joplin and Tuscaloosa tornadoes.

Wavelet transform-based classification methods yielded varying classification accuracies for the four hurricanes examined, ranging from 67 percent to 89 percent classification accuracy for classification models informed by samples from the storms …

Food Availability, Foraging Behavior, And Diet Of Autumn Migrant Landbirds In The Boise Foothills Of Southwestern Idaho, Jay D. Carlisle, Karen L. Olmstead, Casey H. Richart, David L. Swanson Aug 2012

Food Availability, Foraging Behavior, And Diet Of Autumn Migrant Landbirds In The Boise Foothills Of Southwestern Idaho, Jay D. Carlisle, Karen L. Olmstead, Casey H. Richart, David L. Swanson

Intermountain Bird Observatory Publications and Presentations

Food availability and acquisition are critical components of a stopover site's suitability, but we know relatively little about how changes in food availability affect the stopover ecology of migrating landbirds. We examined fruit and arthropod availability in three habitats, studied foraging behavior and diet, and investigated use versus availability for passerines migrating through southwestern Idaho in autumn. Hemiptera dominated foliage-dwelling arthropod communities in all three habitats, whereas Hymenoptera were most numerous among ground-dwelling arthropods. Mountain shrubland had relatively high biomass of both ground-dwelling and foliage-dwelling arthropods, whereas conifer forest had high biomass of foliage-dwelling arthropods only and shrub steppe had …

A Study Of Effective Leadership In The Chinese Context, Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau Aug 2012

A Study Of Effective Leadership In The Chinese Context, Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau

Management Faculty Research

The study of leadership is one of the most often researched management topics. However, most research and theory contributions are to a great extent limited to accounting for leadership practice in the West. This study is designed to develop an effective leadership model that works in the Chinese context. Paternalistic leadership, a dominant leadership style in an Eastern business environment, is compared with transformational leadership, a dominant leadership style in a Western business environment. In addition, the cultural differences between China and the West relating to leader-follower relationships suggest different leadership behaviors may be more effective in one of these …

How Does The Use Of Phonemic Awareness Skill-Building Software In Conjunction With An In-School Literacy Program Benefit Students' Literacy Skills?, Amanda Radell Aug 2012

How Does The Use Of Phonemic Awareness Skill-Building Software In Conjunction With An In-School Literacy Program Benefit Students' Literacy Skills?, Amanda Radell

Education Masters

This study examined how phonemic awareness skill building software benefited the literacy skills of school age children. Research was conducted through observation of two students, a kindergartener and third grader, using Earobics software. In addition to observation, informal interviews were also used to determine the necessity of the software and its possible benefits. The students demonstrated an increase in literacy skills, but not phonemic awareness skills specifically. The benefits of this software allow for students to develop their literacy skills more fully by providing a strong skill base when used as a supplement to a complete literacy program.

Consonance And Dissonance In Visual Music, Bill Alves Aug 2012

Consonance And Dissonance In Visual Music, Bill Alves

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The concepts of consonance and dissonance broadly understood can provide structural models for creators of visual music. The application of words such as 'harmony' across both music and visual arts indicated potential correspondences not just between sensory elements such as pitch and colour but also with the manipulation of tension and resolution, anticipation and stability in visual music. Concepts of harmony have a long history in proportions of space, colour and motion as well as music that artists can now exploit with new technologies. I will offer examples from my own work as well as techniques from artists such as …
