Piezoelectric Probes And Their Capacity To Monitor Time Varying Viscosity, Eman Ahmed
Piezoelectric Probes And Their Capacity To Monitor Time Varying Viscosity, Eman Ahmed
Theses and Dissertations
Real-time, bedside observation of patient clotting is essential in various surgeries in the operating room (OR), but specifically during cardiac surgeries. The objective of this thesis is to design and test a new piezoelectric device that can be used for viscoelasticity measurement with time as a Point of Care (POC) test. Slow turnaround times (TAT) of current methods to monitor blood viscoelastic changes in patients have led to excessive bleeding and the need for blood transfusions in many situations (Despotis et al, 1997). This study shows that the phase shift produced by a resonator sensor can be related to the …

The Defense Of Marriage Act (Doma) Takes Another Bullet: How Can It Survive?, Joanna L. Grossman
The Defense Of Marriage Act (Doma) Takes Another Bullet: How Can It Survive?, Joanna L. Grossman
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Another federal judge has now ruled that the provision of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that precludes recognition of same-sex marriage for any federal-law purpose is unconstitutional. This provision of DOMA has taken several bullets in the last year, but the ruling in Pedersen v. OPM is even more damaging, as it carefully refutes every conceivable argument made in defense of the law, and identifies multiple theories on which it could be invalidated.

Niche-Seeking In Influence Maximization With Adversary, Long Foong Liow, Shih-Fen Cheng, Hoong Chuin Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In hotly contested product categories dominated by a few powerful firms, it is quite common for weaker or late entrants to focus only on particular segments of the whole market. The rationale for such strategy is intuitive: to avoid direct confrontation with heavy-weight firms, and to concentrate in segments where these weaker firms have comparative advantages. In marketing, this is what people called “go niche or go home". The niche-building strategy may rely on “homophily", which implies that consumers in a particular market segment might possess certain set of attributes that cause them to appreciate certain products better (in other …

Between 2007 and 2010 Virgo collected data in coincidence with the LIGO and GEO gravitational-wave (GW) detectors. These data have been searched for GWs emitted by cataclysmic phenomena in the universe, by non-axisymmetric rotating neutron stars or from a stochastic background in the frequency band of the detectors. The sensitivity of GW searches is limited by noise produced by the detector or its environment. It is therefore crucial to characterize the various noise sources in a GW detector. This paper reviews the Virgo detector noise sources, noise propagation, and conversion mechanisms which were identified in the three first Virgo observing …
Purification And Reconstitution Into Planar Bilayers Of The Human Dopamine Transporter, Yoori Kim
Purification And Reconstitution Into Planar Bilayers Of The Human Dopamine Transporter, Yoori Kim
Theses and Dissertations
The human dopamine transporter (hDAT) provides the primary mechanism for dopamine clearance in synapses and thus facilitates the regulation of dopaminergic functions in cognition and reward. It is the molecular target of many centrally-active agents including amphetamines and cocaine. Therefore, an understanding of hDAT function and its modulation by these therapeutic drugs and drugs of abuse can provide insight into the mechanisms of abuse and addiction. In the presented studies, hDAT is tagged with a hexahistidine construct and heterologously expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes. The plasma membranes are isolated, solubilized, and applied to a Nickel affinity column to obtain purified …

Book Review: Disentitlement? The Threats Facing Our Public Health Care Programs And A Rights-Based Response, Elizabeth A. Conradson Cleary
Marquette Elder's Advisor
Timothy Jost suggests that, based on the uniqueness of health care, an entitlement-based health-care system would be more efficient than the current market-based system. He explores the increase in entitlements in the current system, and the threats faced due to current political trends. The entitlement to health care in other countries is discussed. Jost postulates that universal access to health care will require legal entitlements.

Grandparents' Visitation Rights: A Survey Of Reciprocal Kinship-Ties Based In Historical Common Law And Legislative Policies, Jane E. Atkinson
Marquette Elder's Advisor
This article presents an in-depth exploration of the view that family ties and relationships should play an important role in determining grandparent-grandchild visitation rights, based on the important role of the extended family throughout recorded history. Atkinson postulates that post-Troxel visitation decisions should include increased consideration of the value to the child of grandparent visitation.
Medicare Advantage Private Fee-For-Service Plans: What Privatization Means For Today's Beneficiaries, Melissa M. Ostrowski
Medicare Advantage Private Fee-For-Service Plans: What Privatization Means For Today's Beneficiaries, Melissa M. Ostrowski
Marquette Elder's Advisor
Originally solely a government-administered program, Medicare is now offering options involving private insurers. Private fee-for-service plans may offer additional benefits and lower out-of-pocket costs. These plans are expected to have lower administrative costs, but currently require a government subsidy. Advantages and disadvantages of such plans are discussed, and examples showing detailed cost comparisons of two plans, SmartValue Classic and Humana Gold Choice, are given.

Both association and personal liability are discussed.
Book Review: Final Exam: A Surgeon's Reflection On Mortality By Pauline Chen , Kenney F. Hegland
Book Review: Final Exam: A Surgeon's Reflection On Mortality By Pauline Chen , Kenney F. Hegland
Marquette Elder's Advisor
Chen describes modern-day medical practice as a series of situations where something must be done - doing nothing is not an option, almost in defiance of patients' desires. She describes her journey through medical school (and make some comparisons with law school) and tells how patients become representative cases. She speculates that modern cures may spell the demise of bedside manner.

Also discussed are issues involving loans to children, compensation for parent care, blended families, and the advisability of discussion of will provisions with adult children, especially if bequests are unequal. In all instances, steps to maintain family harmony are urged.

Grandparent Molesting: Sexual Abuse Of Elderly Nursing Home Residents And Its Prevention , Robert A. Hawks
Marquette Elder's Advisor
Nursing home residents, especially those with diminished capacity and/or no close relatives nearby, are probably at much greater risk of abuse (especially sexual abuse) than available statistics would indicate. Hawks explains why abuse is underreported, how reporting requirements vary, and describes the effects of elder sexual abuse and its treatment. Legal actions that abused victims and government agencies can or should take and possible legislative changes are also explored.

The Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Benefit: Who Wins And Who Loses? , Enrich Andreas Drotleff
Marquette Elder's Advisor
The author examines the new Medicare Part D Program, discusses first the background history which led to its enactment, and then explains how enrollment decisions affect different classes of beneficiaries. The politics involved in the passage of this legislation are explored. Transitioning dual eligibles (those covered by both Medicare and Medicaid) into the new drug program has often resulted in reduced benefits.
