Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design And Crime Rates In Apartment Settings, Robyn M. Radosevich Aug 2012

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design And Crime Rates In Apartment Settings, Robyn M. Radosevich

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This comparative study has employed qualitative and quantitative methods to examine the implications of the Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) theory. Due to significant inconsistencies in prior research, the effectiveness of CPTED in reducing crime rates was examined. Research analysis has examined the elements of CPTED present at three sample apartment complexes located in a large western city and determined if the apartment settings with physical elements consistent with CPTED experienced lower crime rates. Observational qualitative data and quantitative crime rates were applied in a comparative analysis.

Diironcarbonyl-Coumarin Complex: Preparation Intramolecular Electron Transfer And Electro-Generation Of Hydrogen, Charles A. Mebi, Joshua J. Trujillo, Anwar A. Bhuiyan

Faculty Publications - Physical & Earth Sciences

A new organometallic complex coupling photoactive coumarin to a diironhexacarbonyl unit has been successfully prepared and its composition and electronic structure confirmed by elemental and spectroscopic analyses. Emission spectral analysis of the complex reveals photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer from coumarin to the iron-carbonyl moiety. The compound is electrochemically reduced at -1.24 V vs. Fc/Fc +. This reduction is irreversible, attesting to the instability of the complex. Electrochemical evolution of hydrogen in the presence of the complex has been studied and results are discussed. © Versita Sp. z o.o.

Experimental Determination Of The Stiffness And Strength Of Continuity Tie Connections In Large Wood Roof Dipahragms, And Impact On The Collective Chord Model, Caroline Nicole Yarber Aug 2012

Experimental Determination Of The Stiffness And Strength Of Continuity Tie Connections In Large Wood Roof Dipahragms, And Impact On The Collective Chord Model, Caroline Nicole Yarber

Master's Theses

The goal of this thesis is to determine whether continuity ties in large wood diaphragms are stiff enough to engage and provide diaphragm flexural stiffness in a collective chord model. Four series of continuity tie assemblies using Simpson Strong-Tie steel connectors were tested to determine the stiffness of each assembly. The results found from testing were applied to an example building and then analyzed using both the traditional chord method and the collective chord method.

The completed analysis on a typical size warehouse building showed that the collective chord model will act inadvertently on an existing building designed with a …

Oscillation And Spectral Theory For Linear Hamiltonian Systems With Nonlinear Dependence On The Spectral Parameter, Martin Bohner, Werner Kratz, Roman Šimon Hilscher Aug 2012

Oscillation And Spectral Theory For Linear Hamiltonian Systems With Nonlinear Dependence On The Spectral Parameter, Martin Bohner, Werner Kratz, Roman Šimon Hilscher

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we consider linear Hamiltonian differential systems which depend in general nonlinearly on the spectral parameter and with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Our results generalize the known theory of linear Hamiltonian systems in two respects. Namely, we allow nonlinear dependence of the coefficients on the spectral parameter and at the same time we do not impose any controllability and strict normality assumptions. We introduce the notion of a finite eigenvalue and prove the oscillation theorem relating the number of finite eigenvalues which are less than or equal to a given value of the spectral parameter with the number of …

The Nebraska Phosphorus Index (2012): Background And Users Guide, Charles Wortmann, Charles Shapiro, Leslie J. Johnson, Renee F. Hancock

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This publication provides the basis and procedure for using a phosphorus (P) index to assess risk of P delivery from agricultural land to surface waters. The P index is intended for planning as well as regulatory and educational purposes.

Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for the growth of both crops and aquatic vegetation. Phosphorus, either in inorganic form such as with fertilizer or in organic form as with animal manures, often needs to be applied to the land for optimal crop growth. An important byproduct of animal feeding is manure that contains P. Land application of manure can be beneficial …

Book Review: The Ethics Of Emerging Media: Information, Social Norms And New Media Technology, Sue Burzynski Bullard

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Discussions of new media and ethics sometimes include the notion that “ethics are ethics”—that doing the right thing is, and has been, a constant over time and across media.

The idea has a certain appeal. But it gets new twists in The Ethics of Emerging Media, by Bruce E. Drushel and Kathleen German, assistant professors of communication at Miami University. New media create new ethical questions and opportunities to cross ethical lines, as the thirteen contributors to this collection examine.

Creating A Model Antigen System To Test The Mechanism Of Gcc-Specific Tolerance, Patrick Ihejirika Aug 2012

Creating A Model Antigen System To Test The Mechanism Of Gcc-Specific Tolerance, Patrick Ihejirika

Summer Training Program in Cancer Immunotherapy

Immunotherapeutics for colorectal cancer have been under investigation for decades. Unfortunately, a recent meta-analysis has revealed only a 1% response rate for all immunotherapeutic trials in colorectal cancer, highlighting the need for improved immunotherapeutic target antigens which are tumor-specific, immunogenic, and shared by patients. However, to produce immunological responses targeting tumor/self antigens, one has to overcome tolerance, which has constituted an obstacle to previous studies. Guanylyl cylcase C is the index cancer-mucosa antigen, an emerging class of tumor antigens in colorectal cancer. As a mucosa-restricted antigen, GCC is amenable to immunological targeting and uniquely suited for immunotherapy of colorectal cancers. …

Land, Livelihood And Rana Tharu Identity Transformations In Far-Western Nepal, Lai Ming Lam Aug 2012

Land, Livelihood And Rana Tharu Identity Transformations In Far-Western Nepal, Lai Ming Lam

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This paper examines the interlocking relationships between land, livelihood and the identity transformations of Rana Tharus in far western Nepal. I argue that the formation and transformation of ethnicity is not simply shaped by social changes specifically as a strategic tool for sharing more political power. It also serves as an important currency for the people to achieve a better livelihood. The nature of ethnicity is in fluidity and artificiality. While ideologies concerning ‘Sanskritization’ (the social mobility of non-high caste groups by emulating Hindu ideologies and practices) and ‘Indigenousness’ (social movements that are anti-Hindu and anti-caste) have dominated the discussion …

Co-Exposure To Cigarette Smoke And Alcohol Decreases Airway Epithelial Cell Cilia Beating In A Protein Kinase Cε-Dependent Manner, Todd A. Wyatt, Joseph H. Sisson, Diane S. Allen-Gipson, Michael L. Mccaskill, Jessica A. Boten, Jane M. Devasure, Kristina L. Bailey, Jill A. Poole

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Alcohol use disorders are associated with increased lung infections and exacerbations of chronic lung diseases. Whereas the effects of cigarette smoke are well recognized, the interplay of smoke and alcohol in modulating lung diseases is not clear. Because innate lung defense is mechanically maintained by airway cilia action and protein kinase C (PKC)-activating agents slow ciliary beat frequency (CBF), we hypothesized that the combination of smoke and alcohol would decrease CBF in a PKC-dependent manner. Primary ciliated bronchial epithelial cells were exposed to 5% cigarette smoke extract plus100 mmol/L ethanol for up to 24 hours and assayed for CBF and …

Don’T I Know You? A Misstep In Teaching Mathematics With And For Social Justice In A Rural Context, Joel Amidon Aug 2012

Don’T I Know You? A Misstep In Teaching Mathematics With And For Social Justice In A Rural Context, Joel Amidon

Journal of Contemporary Research in Education

In this paper, I document my own struggles and insights in moving toward a pedagogy of teaching mathematics with and for social justice within a rural high school. Teaching mathematics for social justice has been presented as a way to address the inequities present in the classroom, and the world at large, by having students work with mathematics to question and analyze inequities in their world (Gutstein, 2006). Inclusive education has been presented as a means for providing all students, regardless of their needs, abilities and interests, access to engaging content in the classroom (Villa & Thousand, 2005). These approaches …
