Ultra Shiny, Beccy Feather

Theses

Ultra Shiny; what could be more compelling to a crow, or a hypnotized, dazed supermarket consumer? This thesis will discuss my theories regarding package design, advertising techniques, glitz, pizzazz and pyrotechnics from the sublime to the ridiculous, as a legitimate strategy for art making, both utterly sincere and ironic.

English In Iranian Magazine Advertising, Robert J. Baumgardner, Kimberley Brown Aug 2012

English In Iranian Magazine Advertising, Robert J. Baumgardner, Kimberley Brown

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the thirty-two years since the Islamic Revolution occurred in Iran, economic and cultural globalization have affected the role of English in multiple domains in the country. Within the domain of advertising, shifts have occurred throughout the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Persian scholars have attributed the source of these shifts to tension between local and global identities and to shifts in government advertising policy. This paper explores a data set of 335 advertisements taken from magazines from the period 2006–2008. We contrast borrowings and language display and explore language use in the six parts of the advertisements. …

The Effect Of Urbanization On Ant Abundance And Diversity: A Temporal Examination Of Factors Affecting Biodiversity., Grzegorz A. Buczkowski, Douglas S. Richmond Aug 2012

The Effect Of Urbanization On Ant Abundance And Diversity: A Temporal Examination Of Factors Affecting Biodiversity., Grzegorz A. Buczkowski, Douglas S. Richmond

Department of Entomology Faculty Publications

Numerous studies have examined the effect of urbanization on species richness and most studies implicate urbanization as the major cause of biodiversity loss. However, no study has identified an explicit connection between urbanization and biodiversity loss as the impact of urbanization is typically inferred indirectly by comparing species diversity along urban-rural gradients at a single time point. A different approach is to focus on the temporal rather than the spatial aspect and perform “before and after” studies where species diversity is cataloged over time in the same sites. The current study examined changes in ant abundance and diversity associated with …

Dean, Wensheng Zhao, Mi Shen, Haiwang Zhang, Chao Li, Liyuan Liu, Lei Cao, Xiaowen Xu, Yunfei Xing, Tom Hsiang, Ziding Zhang, Jin-Rong Xu, You-Liang Peng

Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Rice blast caused by Magnaporthe oryzae is one of the most destructive diseases of rice worldwide. The fungal pathogen is notorious for its ability to overcome host resistance. To better understand its genetic variation in nature, we sequenced the genomes of two field isolates, Y34 and P131. In comparison with the previously sequenced laboratory strain 70-15, both field isolates had a similar genome size but slightly more genes. Sequences from the field isolates were used to improve genome assembly and gene prediction of 70-15. Although the overall genome structure is similar, a number of gene families that are likely involved …

Perceptions Of Industry Change: Decadal Comparative Analysis Of Consumer Satisfaction, Brent D. Bowen, Erin E. Bowen, Dean E. Headley, Edward Sabin

Aviation Technology Faculty and Staff Publications

Longitudinal comparisons of perceptions are rarely available over rapid industrial change, and few industries have changed to the degree of airline travel in the post-9/11 decade. This study presents comparative analysis of airline consumer perceptions following September 11th 2001 to findings from a Congressperson-initiated survey of 3,500 travelers ending 2011.

The National Airline Quality Rating (AQR), released annually each April at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. and viewed each year by more than 75 million people both nationally and internationally, debuted in the national media as an innovative, objective method of comparing airline quality on combined multiple performance …

The Effects Of Explicit Instruction On The Development Of Reading Fluency, Michael Jeffrey Zwick Aug 2012

The Effects Of Explicit Instruction On The Development Of Reading Fluency, Michael Jeffrey Zwick

Theses and Dissertations

Developing reading fluency in a first language (L1) is a topic that has received a considerable amount of attention. Developing reading fluency in a second language (L2), however, has received relatively little attention (Grabe, 2009). Anderson (2008) defines reading fluency as "reading at an appropriate rate with adequate comprehension." For adult ESL learners, Anderson suggests a minimum rate of 200 wpm with at least 70% comprehension. Previous studies that have been conducted on L2 reading fluency focus primarily on reading rate development. This study seeks to combine rate development and comprehension development to effectively foster L2 reading fluency. Doing so …

The Effect Of Utilizing A Humanoid Robot On Social Engagement Behaviors In Children With Autism During Interaction With A Familiar Adult, Alyssa Stabenow Aug 2012

The Effect Of Utilizing A Humanoid Robot On Social Engagement Behaviors In Children With Autism During Interaction With A Familiar Adult, Alyssa Stabenow

Theses and Dissertations

This study focused on intervention using a humanoid robot to facilitate social engagement and joint attention in four children with autism. Intervention was conducted over a three month period, with each child receiving pre-testing, intervention, and post-testing. Intervention was based on the SCERTS model (Prizant, Wetherby, Rubin, & Laurent, 2003). Pre- and post-testing involved interactions with a parent, a familiar adult interaction, a less-familiar adult interaction, and a triadic interaction. This study focuses on the baseline and follow-up testing from the interaction with the familiar adult. Following a period of traditional intervention, sessions involving a humanoid robot (named Troy) were …

Trouble Every Day, Nina E. Schwanse Aug 2012

Trouble Every Day, Nina E. Schwanse

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

My interests lie in the intersection of the public and private, the corporate and personal, especially with regard to self-representation within cultural power structures. Utilizing video and web technologies, performance, and painting, I create imagined realms of fantasy, desire, obsession, and anxiety. Operating within, but not bound by, feminist discourse, my work explores the vehicles and effects by which both analog and digital technologies influence the relationship between the self and the object of desire (whether physical or virtual, interior or exterior to the body) and have produced both progressive and regressive offspring. By performing the role of both producer …

Ii-Vi Core-Shell Nanowires: Synthesis, Characterizations And Photovoltaic Applications, Kai Wang Aug 2012

Ii-Vi Core-Shell Nanowires: Synthesis, Characterizations And Photovoltaic Applications, Kai Wang

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The emergence of semiconducting nanowires as the new building blocks for photovoltaic (PV) devices has drawn considerable attention because of the great potential of achieving high efficiency and low cost. In special, nanowires with a coaxial structure, namely, core-shell structures have demonstrated significant advantages over other device configurations in terms of radial charge collection and cost reduction. In this dissertation, several core-shell nanowire structures, including ZnO/ZnSe, ZnO/ZnS, and CdSe/ZnTe, have been synthesized and the photovoltaic devices processed from a ZnO/ZnS core-shell nanowire array and a single CdSe/ZnTe core-shell nanowire have been demonstrated.

By combining the chemical vapor deposition and pulsed …

Municipal Wastewater Disinfection With Electromagnetic Waves Using Escherichia Coli Concentration As Measurement Of Quantification, Lauren M. Cagle Aug 2012

Municipal Wastewater Disinfection With Electromagnetic Waves Using Escherichia Coli Concentration As Measurement Of Quantification, Lauren M. Cagle

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Wastewater treatment is essential to protecting the environment and human welfare. Although chlorination is widely used, the environmental and health concerns associated with chlorine are growing. Treatment facilities are implementing alternative technologies, though the cost and efficiency associated with these practices leave much room in the wastewater field for innovation.

Hydropath Technologies Limited introduced a piece of equipment that uses the properties of a transformer to pass an alternating electric current through the pipe and into the contents of the channel. Hydroflow claims that the charged microorganisms react with the oppositely charged water molecule to force osmosis and kill the …

Completely Recursive Least Squares And Its Applications, Xiaomeng Bian Aug 2012

Completely Recursive Least Squares And Its Applications, Xiaomeng Bian

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The matrix-inversion-lemma based recursive least squares (RLS) approach is of a recursive form and free of matrix inversion, and has excellent performance regarding computation and memory in solving the classic least-squares (LS) problem. It is important to generalize RLS for generalized LS (GLS) problem. It is also of value to develop an efficient initialization for any RLS algorithm.

In Chapter 2, we develop a unified RLS procedure to solve the unconstrained/linear-equality (LE) constrained GLS. We also show that the LE constraint is in essence a set of special error-free observations and further consider the GLS with implicit LE constraint in …

Ethnic Diversity And Poverty: A Dynamic Panel Study Of Illinois Counties, Ambuj Neupane Aug 2012

Ethnic Diversity And Poverty: A Dynamic Panel Study Of Illinois Counties, Ambuj Neupane

Master's Theses - Economics

Ethnic diversity’s effects on factors of economic development have been studied widely in recent years. I expand upon this research by directly studying ethnic diversity’s effects on the poverty rates within the counties of Illinois, using a dynamic panel technique devised by Blundell and Bond (1998). My results are consistent with the noted effects in previous literature, and provide extra weight towards measures of fractionalization and polarization. I conclude with policy implications and limitations which require future research.

Preparation And Characterization Of A Self-Crimp Side-By-Side Bicomponent Electrospun Material, Yang Han Aug 2012

Preparation And Characterization Of A Self-Crimp Side-By-Side Bicomponent Electrospun Material, Yang Han

Theses and Dissertations

Bicomponent composite fibers have been widely used in the textile industry and are gaining increasing attention on biomedical applications. In this research, polycaprolactone/poly (lactic acid) side-by-side bicomponent fibers were created for the application of a biodegradable scaffold. The side-by-side structure endowed the fiber with self-crimps when it was processed under certain conditions. This material was produced by electrospinning and collected on a high speed rotating mandrel to get highly oriented fibers. A mechanical stretch at the same direction was done followed by a wet heat treatment for polymer retraction. Crimped fibers were demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy. The quantitative porosity …

Cellular Automata-Based Parallel Random Number Generators Using Fpgas, David H.K. Hoe, Jonathan M. Comer, Juan C. Cerda, Chris D. Martinez, Mukul V. Shirvaikar Aug 2012

Cellular Automata-Based Parallel Random Number Generators Using Fpgas, David H.K. Hoe, Jonathan M. Comer, Juan C. Cerda, Chris D. Martinez, Mukul V. Shirvaikar

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cellular computing represents a new paradigm for implementing high-speed massively parallel machines. Cellular automata (CA), which consist of an array of locally connected processing elements, are a basic form of a cellular-based architecture. The use of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) for implementing CA accelerators has shown promising results. This paper investigates the design of CA-based pseudo-random number generators (PRNGs) using an FPGA platform. To improve the quality of the random numbers that are generated, the basic CA structure is enhanced in two ways. First, the addition of a superrule to each CA cell is considered. The resulting self-programmable CA …
