Cofeel: Using Emotions For Social Interaction In Group Recommender Systems, Yu Chen, Pearl Pu Sep 2012

Cofeel: Using Emotions For Social Interaction In Group Recommender Systems, Yu Chen, Pearl Pu

Faculty Publications, Information Systems & Technology

Group and social recommender systems aim to suggest items of interest to a group or a community of people. One important issue in such environment is to understand each individual’s preference and attitude within the group. Social and behavioral scientist have evidenced the role of emotions in group work and social communication. This paper aims to examine the role of emotion for social interaction in group recommenders. We implemented CoFeel, an interface that aims to provide emotional input in group recommenders. We further apply CoFeel in a GroupFun, a mobile group music recommender system. Results of an in-depth field study …

Impact Of Older-Worker-Friendly Organizational Policies On Retirement Attitudes And Planning, Jeremy Cochran, Kerri Anne Crowne, Caryl E. Carpenter Sep 2012

Impact Of Older-Worker-Friendly Organizational Policies On Retirement Attitudes And Planning, Jeremy Cochran, Kerri Anne Crowne, Caryl E. Carpenter

Organization Management Journal

This study develops and analyzes a model of the impact of older-worker-friendly (OWF) organizations’ policies on retirement, specifically attitudes toward retirement, preparation for retirement, and years to planned retirement age. This is particularly a timely topic as the Baby Boomer generation heads into retirement and organizations need to better understand the retirement intentions of this group. A model was developed and tested using linear regression, and results indicate that the hypothesized relationships are supported. Instituting certain OWF policies leads to older workers who are more prepared for retirement, and thus have more positive attitudes about retiring, which ultimately leads to …

Relational Aesthetics And Emotional Relations: Leadership On Board Merchant Marine Ships, Nana Gharibyan-Kefalloniti, David Sims

Organization Management Journal

Life on board merchant marine ships is very tough, very male, and isolated from much of the rest of the world by language, culture, and usually a large expanse of sea. This article presents data that show that leadership in this environment is full of aesthetic appreciation that is often relational, arising in interaction with others’ appreciation, and also full of strongly felt emotion. Those who exercise leadership on merchant marine ships (captains, chief engineers, first officers) turn out to have strong views on the importance of understanding aesthetics and emotions in discharging their responsibilities. We illuminate these leaders’ aesthetics …

The Interactive Effects Of Self-Esteem, Goal Instructions, And Incentives On Personal Goals And Goal Attainment, Faten M. Moussa Sep 2012

The Interactive Effects Of Self-Esteem, Goal Instructions, And Incentives On Personal Goals And Goal Attainment, Faten M. Moussa

Organization Management Journal

An individual’s personal goal is one of the strongest motivators, yet its determinants and processes are not well understood, especially those dealing with person–situation interaction. This research examines the interactive effects of monetary incentive types, self-set goal level instructions, and self-esteem on personal goals and goal attainment. A laboratory research study with a sample of 300 students found a statistically significant three-way interaction among monetary incentive types (pay for performance [piece rate], pay for goal attainment [GA-bonus], and pay for participation [hourly flat rate]), self-set goal level instructions (an instruction to set hard, easy, any, and no goals), and self-esteem …

Optimal Control Of Vehicular Formations With Nearest Neighbor Interactions, Fu Lin, Makan Fardad, Mihailo R. Jovanovic Sep 2012

Optimal Control Of Vehicular Formations With Nearest Neighbor Interactions, Fu Lin, Makan Fardad, Mihailo R. Jovanovic

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

We consider the design of optimal localized feedback gains for one-dimensional formations in which vehicles only use information from their immediate neighbors. The control objective is to enhance coherence of the formation by making it behave like a rigid lattice. For the single-integrator model with symmetric gains, we establish convexity, implying that the globally optimal controller can be computed efficiently. We also identify a class of convex problems for double-integrators by restricting the controller to symmetric position and uniform diagonal velocity gains. To obtain the optimal non-symmetric gains for both the single- and the double-integrator models, we solve a parameterized …

The Educational Achievement Gap As A Social Justice Issue For Teacher Educators, Rachel M. B. Collopy, Connie L. Bowman, David A. Taylor Sep 2012

The Educational Achievement Gap As A Social Justice Issue For Teacher Educators, Rachel M. B. Collopy, Connie L. Bowman, David A. Taylor

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

The educational achievement gap is a critical social justice issue. Catholic and Marianist conceptions of social justice in particular call people to work with others in their spheres of life to transform institutions in order to further human rights while promoting the common good. Drawing on key elements of Catholic teaching on social justice, we argue that the achievement gap constitutes a social injustice. We then offer a case illustrating collaboration between university-based teacher educators and school faculty to address the achievement gap through transforming the institutions of school and of teacher preparation. The Dayton Early College Academy (DECA), founded …

Phthalate Exposure Changes The Metabolic Profile Of Cardiac Muscle Cells, Nikki G. Posnack, Luther M. Swift, Matthew W. Kay, Norman H. Lee, Narine Sarvazyan Sep 2012

Phthalate Exposure Changes The Metabolic Profile Of Cardiac Muscle Cells, Nikki G. Posnack, Luther M. Swift, Matthew W. Kay, Norman H. Lee, Narine Sarvazyan

Pharmacology and Physiology Faculty Publications

Background: Phthalates are common plasticizers present in medical-grade plastics and other everyday products. They can also act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals and have been linked to the rise in metabolic disorders. However, the effect of phthalates on cardiac metabolism remains largely unknown.

Objectives: We examined the effect of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) on the metabolic profile of cardiomyocytes because alterations in metabolic processes can lead to cell dysfunction.

Methods: Neonatal rat cardiomyocytes were treated with DEHP at a concentration and duration comparable to clinical exposure (50–100 μg/mL, 72 hr). We assessed the effect of DEHP on gene expression using microarray analysis. Physiological responses …

The Use Of Mobile Phone Cameras In Guiding Treatment Decisions For Laceration Care, Neal Sikka, Michael Pirri, Katrina Norbury Carlin, Ryan Strauss, Faisal Rahimi, Jesse M. Pines Sep 2012

The Use Of Mobile Phone Cameras In Guiding Treatment Decisions For Laceration Care, Neal Sikka, Michael Pirri, Katrina Norbury Carlin, Ryan Strauss, Faisal Rahimi, Jesse M. Pines

Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications

Objectives: Mobile phone technology may be useful in helping to guide medical decisions for lacerations. We examined whether emergency department (ED) provider opinions on which lacerations require repair differed using mobile phone–generated images compared with in-person evaluations.

Subjects and Methods: Patients presenting to an urban ED for initial and follow-up laceration care were prospectively enrolled. Patients took four mobile phone pictures of their laceration and provided a medical history. Cases were reviewed by ED providers who assessed image quality and made a recommendation about whether the laceration needed repair. The same provider then assessed the patient in-person. Concordant decision-making between …

Asthma Randomized Trial Of Indoor Wood Smoke (Artis): Rationale And Methods, Curtis W. Noonan, Tony Ward Sep 2012

Asthma Randomized Trial Of Indoor Wood Smoke (Artis): Rationale And Methods, Curtis W. Noonan, Tony Ward

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Background—Particulate matter (PM) exposures have been linked with poor respiratory health outcomes, especially among susceptible populations such as asthmatic children. Smoke from biomass combustion for residential home heating is an important source of PM in many rural or peri-urban areas in the United States.

Aim—To assess the efficacy of residential interventions that reduce indoor PM exposure from wood stoves and to quantify the corresponding improvements in quality of life and health outcomes for asthmatic children.

Design—The Asthma Randomized Trial of Indoor wood Smoke (ARTIS) study is an in-home intervention study of susceptible children exposed to biomass combustion …
