Structure And Composition Of Leachfield Bacterial Communities: Role Of Soil Texture, Depth And Septic Tank Effluent Inputs, José A. Amador, Janet A. Atoyan

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Although groundwater quality depends on microbial processes in the soil treatment area (STA) of onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTS), our understanding of the development of these microbial communities is limited. We examined the bacterial communities of sand, sandy loam, and clay STAs at different depths in response to septic tank effluent (STE) addition using mesocosms. Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (TRFLP) analysis was used to compare the bacterial community structure and composition of STE, native soil prior to STE addition (UNX) and soil exposed to STE (EXP). Principal component analysis separated communities with depth in sand but not in sandy …

Community Health Workers: A Front Line For Primary Care?, Lisa Sprague Sep 2012

Community Health Workers: A Front Line For Primary Care?, Lisa Sprague

National Health Policy Forum

Among the potential changes invoked in discussions on health system transformation, a need to revitalize primary care remains paramount. One way of doing this, most agree, is to move more in the direction of team-based care. Professionals such as physician assistants and nurse practitioners may be able to ease some of the physician’s clinical care load, but some populations also need help accessing services and basic health education in a familiar setting. Enter the community health worker (CHW), known by many titles and playing a variety of roles, who comes from the community he or she is serving and therefore …

Perlecan Domain V Induces Vegf Secretion In Brain Endothelial Cells Through Integrin Α5Β1 And Erk-Dependent Signaling Pathways., Douglas N Clarke, Abraham Al Ahmad, Boyeon Lee, Christi Parham, Lisa Auckland, Andrezj Fertala, Michael Kahle, Courtney S Shaw, Jill Roberts, Gregory J Bix

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

Perlecan Domain V (DV) promotes brain angiogenesis by inducing VEGF release from brain endothelial cells (BECs) following stroke. In this study, we define the specific mechanism of DV interaction with the α(5)β(1) integrin, identify the downstream signal transduction pathway, and further investigate the functional significance of resultant VEGF release. Interestingly, we found that the LG3 portion of DV, which has been suggested to possess most of DV's angio-modulatory activity outside of the brain, binds poorly to α(5)β(1) and induces less BEC proliferation compared to full length DV. Additionally, we implicate DV's DGR sequence as an important element for the interaction …

A Student’S Perspective Of The Tucker Student Center, Office Of University Communications, Liz Van Halsema Sep 2012

A Student’S Perspective Of The Tucker Student Center, Office Of University Communications, Liz Van Halsema

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

Throughout the years, students have come to Gardner-Webb for a number of reasons, including the beautiful campus, Division I sports, great faculty members, and an openness rarely seen among other universities. As a senior who is well versed in the culture of Gardner-Webb, I can say with confidence that all of these aspects have stayed true throughout my college career. But for a campus that stresses the importance of its students and community, there always seemed to be one thing missing: a single location that catered to just that: community among students.

Advancing The Vincentian Tradition Through Strategic Service And Research, Richard Sinatra, James J. Maher Sep 2012

Advancing The Vincentian Tradition Through Strategic Service And Research, Richard Sinatra, James J. Maher

Journal of Catholic Education

This article reveals how St. John’s University implemented mission-focused programs to advance its unique Catholic perspective, that of the Vincentian tradition to serve the poor and remedy social inequities. Heeding the 1986 call of Pope John Paul II to Vincentian institutions, all levels of the university from incoming freshmen to the board of trustees have embraced the Pope’s message to serve the poor and needy. Major program initiatives have included an expanded and enriched academic service-learning (ASL) program with a Discover New York service component for all incoming freshmen; the creation of a Vincentian Institute for Social Action to coordinate …

Perceptions Of Catholic Identity: Views Of Catholic School Administrators And Teachers, John J. Convey

Journal of Catholic Education

This article presents the results of a survey conducted in 2010 of over 3,300 administrators and teachers in Catholic elementary and secondary schools nationally about their understanding of the meaning of the term “Catholic identity.” The survey was conducted in the fall of 2010 in anticipation of a national conference on the Catholic identity of Catholic elementary and secondary schools at The Catholic University of America, October 2-4, 2011. The vast majority of respondents viewed the school’s culture or faith community as the most important component of its Catholic identity. The longer the teacher or administrator worked in Catholic schools, …

Teaching A Catholic Philosophy Of Interpersonal Communication: The Case For “Soul Friendship”, Kathleen Glenister Roberts Sep 2012

Teaching A Catholic Philosophy Of Interpersonal Communication: The Case For “Soul Friendship”, Kathleen Glenister Roberts

Journal of Catholic Education

While social justice education has a rich and ancient history within the Catholic Church, academic disciplines have only recently begun to make the idea of social justice relevant within courses for undergraduates. In the communication discipline, debate about social justice has been lively and varied over the last two decades, and has provided rich entry points for philosophical interpretation. This paper considers interpersonal communication from the vantage point of social justice in the Catholic intellectual tradition. While the importance of friendship for society is nothing new (Aristotle addressed this issue in the Nicomachean Ethics), contemporary cultural hindrances to a just …
