The urease-catalyzed hydrolysis of urea displays feedback that results in a switch from acid (pH ∼3) to base (pH ∼9) after a controllable period of time (from 10 to >5000 s). Here we show that the spatially distributed reaction can support pH wave fronts propagating with a speed of the order of 0.1-1 mm min-1. The experimental results were reproduced qualitatively in reaction-diffusion simulations including a Michaelis-Menten expression for the urease reaction with a bell-shaped rate-pH dependence. However, this model fails to predict that at lower enzyme concentrations, the unstirred reaction does not always support fronts when the well-stirred reaction …

Cancer stem cells, also known as tumour-initiating cells (TICs), are identified as highly tumorigenic population within tumours and hypothesized to be main regulators in tumour growth, metastasis and relapse. Evidence also suggests that a tumour microenvironment plays a critical role in the development and progression of cancer, by constantly modulating cell–matrix interactions. Scientists have tried to characterize and identify the TIC population but the actual combination of extracellular components in deciphering the fate of TICs has not been explored. The basic unanswered question is the phenotypic stability of this TIC population in a tissue extracellular matrix setting. The in vivo …
“It Depends On Where You Go!” The Transnational Racial Consciousness Of Dominican Immigrants, Lucinda Bratini
“It Depends On Where You Go!” The Transnational Racial Consciousness Of Dominican Immigrants, Lucinda Bratini
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
This study aimed to explore transnational racial consciousness among immigrants from the Dominican Republic. Racial consciousness is the process whereby the people develop awareness and understanding of social oppression (Freire, 1971; Quintana and Segura-Herrera, 2003, p. 274). Fifteen self-identified Dominican immigrants participated in semi-structured interviews, focused on their understandings of skin-color, racialization, racism, and group membership. A grounded theory design framed from a constructivist and critical social justice approach guided the analysis of the data. The theoretical framework that emerged from the analysis of the data suggests a core narrative of “negotiating contradicting cultural scripts” about race and racialization and …
Automation Of Landmark Selection For Rodent Brain Mri-Histology Registration Using Thin-Plate Splines, Ayan Sengupta
Automation Of Landmark Selection For Rodent Brain Mri-Histology Registration Using Thin-Plate Splines, Ayan Sengupta
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Image registration is the process of aligning two different images of the same object taken at different times, at different orientations or using different instruments. This is common in medical applications since multiple modalities are used to image different parts of the body. This is an important early step in many diagnostic procedures such as change detection, monitoring tumor or quantifying spread of a disease. The widely used landmark based registration approach is tedious, time consuming, inconsistent and error prone. Furthermore, the standard schemes based on rigid and affine transformation can only describe global geometric differences between the objects of …
The Applications Of Additive Manufacturing Technologies In Cyber-Enabled Manufacturing Systems, Sriram Praneeth Isanaka, Frank W. Liou
The Applications Of Additive Manufacturing Technologies In Cyber-Enabled Manufacturing Systems, Sriram Praneeth Isanaka, Frank W. Liou
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The application of networked sensors and control in various areas, such as smart grids and infrastructures, has become a recent trend, called cyber-physical systems. The Cyber Enabled Manufacturing (CEM) environment is to apply these technologies in manufacturing systems to handle a significantly greater magnitude of manufacturing data. Additive manufacturing techniques print or place material layer by layer to form a part, thus have a great potential to help accelerate CEM process by printing or embedding sensors and actuators in the proper locations. This paper summarizes the roles of additive manufacturing technologies to help establish a CEM environment.

Characterizing The Role Of Hspb2 In Cardiac Metabolism And Muscle Structure Using Yeast And Mammalian Systems, Jonathan Paul Neubert
Characterizing The Role Of Hspb2 In Cardiac Metabolism And Muscle Structure Using Yeast And Mammalian Systems, Jonathan Paul Neubert
Theses and Dissertations
HspB2 is a small heat shock protein encoded on human chromosome 11. Less than 1000 base pairs away from HSPB2 and situated in a head-to-head orientation lies the gene encoding another small heat shock protein, CRYAB. Because they are uncommonly close to one another they share regulatory elements. In addition, they share protein homology as sHSPs, suggesting that they perhaps perform aimilar functions. SHSPs such as HspB2 and CryAB are traditionally thought to provide protective effects to cells in response to a variety of stress inducers. In response to stress they form complexes around misfolded proteins or proteins in danger …

Real-Time Target Following Using An Unmanned Rotorcraft With A Laser Rangefinder, Bryce Sanders Pincock
Theses and Dissertations
Micro-unmanned aerial rotorcraft are quickly gaining acceptance as indoor platforms for performing stealth, surveillance, and rescue and reconnaissance missions. These rotorcraft are generally required to operate in cluttered, unknown, and dynamic GPS-denied environments, which present threats to the safe operation of the vehicle. To overcome these environmental challenges, we describe a system that is capable of localizing itself by producing accurate odometry estimates that can detect and track moving objects and avoid collisions with obstacles while following a moving target using a laser range finder. Our system has been implemented in the Simulink environment in MATLAB. Various simulations have shown …
Gas Phase Characterization Of Supramolecules Using Cross-Sectional Areas By Fticr And Sustained Off-Resonance Irradiation Collision Induced Dissociation Techniques In A Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometer, Fan Yang
Theses and Dissertations
In my dissertation, I use a Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometer (FTICR-MS) to investigate supramolecules. Cross-sectional areas by Fourier transform ICR (CRAFTI), a novel technique for measurements of collision cross sections by FTICR, is demonstrated for the first time. The CRAFTI method measures the total "dephasing cross section" for removal of the ions from the coherent packet in the FTICR cell, including contributions not only from momentum transfer but also from reactive collisions including those leading to collisional dissociation. Experimental CRAFTI collision cross sections correlate linearly with theoretically computed results and with results obtained using ion mobility measurements. …
Understanding Noble Metal Addition In Cobalt Fischer Tropsch Catalysts, Kari Marie Cook
Understanding Noble Metal Addition In Cobalt Fischer Tropsch Catalysts, Kari Marie Cook
Theses and Dissertations
The effects of noble metal (NM) promotion and deposition order (co-deposition of NM with the final Co deposition [co-dep] or sequential deposition of NM after Co deposition [seq-dep]) on surface area, pore size, metal retention, crystallite size, noble metal distribution and bonding in Co Fischer Tropsch (FT) catalysts were studied as were the resulting Co reducibility and Fischer Tropsch activity/selectivity properties. Catalysts containing nominally 25wt% Co with either 0.3 wt% Ru, 0.58 wt% Pt, 0.55wt% Re, or no NM on a La-stabilized-Al2O3 support were prepared by wet deposition. The Co, Pt, and Re were uniformly dispersed, but Ru distribution and …

Huntington's disease (HD) is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder with no disease-modifying treatments available. The disease is caused by expansion of a CAG trinucleotide repeat and manifests with progressive motor abnormalities, psychiatric symptoms, and cognitive decline. Expression of an expanded polyglutamine repeat within the Huntingtin (Htt) protein impacts numerous cellular processes, including protein folding and clearance. A hallmark of the disease is the progressive formation of inclusions that represent the culmination of a complex aggregation process. Methylene blue (MB), has been shown to modulate aggregation of amyloidogenic disease proteins. We investigated whether MB could impact mutant Htt-mediated aggregation and neurotoxicity. MB …
Active Storage And Ssd Caching In An Object Storage Environment, Michael T. Runde
Active Storage And Ssd Caching In An Object Storage Environment, Michael T. Runde
Master's Theses
The advancing performance and lowering costs required to implement additional processing power on system peripherals such as disk drives are increasingly allowing additional computing ability to be located directly on individual drives. Active Storage attempts to take advantage of this excess by moving some computationally intensive applications directly to the disk drives. This can remove the bottlenecks seen through interconnects between the drives and the CPU of an initiating system as well as remove the need for systems to handle these applications.
The contributions of this thesis are in two areas. The first is the development of a framework designed …

Fluorescene Imaging Of Mouse Sperm / Noorain H., H. Nooraain
Student Works (2010-2019)
The protocol for detecting acrosome in mouse sperm was developed by using two types of fluorescent dyes namely fluorescein conjugated Pisum sativum agglutinin (FITC-PSA) and rhodamine conjugated Lens culinaris agglutinin (TRITC-LCA). The results showed that mean percentages of acrosome intact sperm incubated in vitro were considerably low. After one-hour incubation there were 43.20±2.83%, 31.81±8.44% and 30.90±4.15% for ICR, C57/6J and F1 sperm, respectively. Intact acrosome in ICR sperm was significantly reduced (p<0.05) to 16.95±4.23% after two-hour incubation, however, insignificant reduction (p>0.05) was found for C57BL/6J and F1 sperm, which were 30.03±2.06% and 20.93±3.81%, respectively. The results showed that both dyes FITC-PSA and TRITC-LCA suitably stained the mouse sperm …0.05)>

The density functional theory (DFT) has been used to solve the SchrÄodinger equation. The computer programmes have been developed which give a real advantage for solving large matrices in DFT that seem impossible to write by hand. The Amsterdam density functional (ADF) and DMol3 of Accelerys have been used to calculate the vibrational frequencies of the atoms and molecules. The clusters of the molecules have been made for the study of glasses such as AgGeSe, AsSe, AsS, AsO, CuO, Se, FeP, FeAs, CN and graphene. These calculations are in good agreement with the experimental results. The local density approximation (LDA) …

Student Works (2010-2019)
iiiC6H4CH(Br)CH(OCH3)COOH was obtained as the major product. The triorganotin diorganodithiocarbamylacetate were found to be inert towards any brominating agents. The bromination products were characterized by spectroscopic techniques such as 1H, 13C NMR and FT-IR spectroscopies. The X-ray structures of four bromination products namely 2,3-dibromo-3-phenylpropionic acid (A6), 2-bromo-3-methoxy-3-(p-methoxyphenyl)propionic acid (A7), bis(4,4-dimethyl-aminopyridinium)-2,3-dibromo-3-(p-chlorophenyl)propionate (A9) and tricyclohexyltin 2,3-dibromo-3-phenylprionate (P4) were also determined. In addition, ten selected triorganotin carboxylates, C4–C10, C14, P4–P6 were investigated for their cytotoxic activities against the human leukemia HL60 cells. In general, the triorganotin carboxylates exhibit comparable cytotoxic activities to that of cisplatin.

Preliminary Assessment Of The Effect Of Plant Protease Inhibitors On The Expression Of Heterologous Genes In Plant Cells / Nassim Khalighi, Nassim Khalighi
Student Works (2010-2019)
Despite the successful development of pant-based expression systems for the production of a wide range of recombinant proteins in recent years, there remain serious limitations in the final yield accumulation of the foreign protein in the plant cells used. Plant protease activity represents a significant barrier to efficient and hence economical recombinant protein production. Inadequate information is available on specific plant proteases and its role in foreign protein degradation. Some strategies have been reported recently to overcome endogenous plant protease effects on foreign protein integrity and activity in plants including the co-expression of recombinant proteases to reduce the endogenous protease …

Despite an overall sinistral slip rate of ≈3 cm/yr, few major earthquakes have occurred in the past 200 years along the Chaman fault system, the western boundary of the India Plate with the Eurasia Plate. GPS and InSAR data reported here indicate sinistral shear velocities of 8–17 mm/yr across the westernmost branches of the fault system, suggesting that a significant fraction of the plate boundary slip is distributed in the fold and fault belt to the east. At its southernmost on‐land segment (≈26°N), near the triple junction between the Arabia, Eurasia, and India Plates, we find the velocity across the …

What Do We Do And Why Do We Do It?, Emily Ford
What Do We Do And Why Do We Do It?, Emily Ford
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
The library community should develop a philosophy of librarianship. In order to do so the community should engage in a dialogue about what we do and why we do it. Our history with the idea of a philosophy of librarianship is long, yet the library community hasn’t resolved the problem of what that philosophy (or philosophies) should be. Engaging in a reflective and philosophically-based practice of librarianship (a praxis of librarianship), one that frames decision-making and library work with the question: “what we do and why we do it?” will enable the library community to have successful conversations with those …
