Cross-Ontology Multi-Level Association Rule Mining In The Gene Ontology., Prashanti Manda, Seval Ozkan, Hui Wang, Fiona M. Mccarthy, Susan M. Bridges

FWRC Publications

The Gene Ontology (GO) has become the internationally accepted standard for representing function, process, and location aspects of gene products. The wealth of GO annotation data provides a valuable source of implicit knowledge of relationships among these aspects. We describe a new method for association rule mining to discover implicit co-occurrence relationships across the GO sub-ontologies at multiple levels of abstraction. Prior work on association rule mining in the GO has concentrated on mining knowledge at a single level of abstraction and/or between terms from the same sub-ontology. We have developed a bottom-up generalization procedure called Cross-Ontology Data Mining-Level by …

Bullshit!: Why The Retroactive Application Of Federal Rules Of Evidence 413-414 And State Counterparts Violates The Ex Post Facto Clause, Colin Miller Oct 2012

Bullshit!: Why The Retroactive Application Of Federal Rules Of Evidence 413-414 And State Counterparts Violates The Ex Post Facto Clause, Colin Miller

Faculty Publications

In Calder v. Bull, the Supreme Court recognized four types of laws that cannot be applied retroactively consistent with the Ex Post Facto Clause, including “[e]very law that alters the legal rules of evidence, and receives less, or different, testimony, than the law required at the time of the commission of the offence, in order to convict the offender.” But, in its opinion in Carmell v. Texas, the Court determined that ordinary rules of evidence do not violate the Clause because they (1) are “evenhanded, in the sense that they may benefit either the State or the defendant in a …

Phytoplankton Responses To Atmospheric Metal Deposition In The Coastal And Open-Ocean Sargasso Sea, Katherine Mackey, Kristen N. Buck, John Casey, Abigail Cid, Michael Lomas, Yoshiki Sohrin, Adina Paytan Oct 2012

Phytoplankton Responses To Atmospheric Metal Deposition In The Coastal And Open-Ocean Sargasso Sea, Katherine Mackey, Kristen N. Buck, John Casey, Abigail Cid, Michael Lomas, Yoshiki Sohrin, Adina Paytan

Marine Science Faculty Publications

This study investigated the impact of atmospheric metal deposition on natural phytoplankton communities at open-ocean and coastal sites in the Sargasso Sea during the spring bloom. Locally collected aerosols with different metal contents were added to natural phytoplankton assemblages from each site, and changes in nitrate, dissolved metal concentration, and phytoplankton abundance and carbon content were monitored. Addition of aerosol doubled the concentrations of cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and nickel (Ni) in the incubation water. Over the 3-day experiments, greater drawdown of dissolved metals occurred in the open ocean water, whereas little metal drawdown …

The Obama Effect: A Radical Rorschach Test, Jill Gill Oct 2012

The Obama Effect: A Radical Rorschach Test, Jill Gill

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Watching Barack Obama’s presidential victory in November 2008, nearly every observer seemed to grasp the historic importance of the moment. Our nation, born amid ideals of human equality while economically tethered to black slavery—and then for a century more to federally-condoned, nationwide discrimination—had just elected its first black commander in chief. Clearly, America had taken another huge stride toward living out the meaning of its creed. After all, Obama unexpectedly beat Hillary Clinton in very white states like Idaho and Iowa to win his party’s nomination. Then he picked up some unlikely victories within the former Confederacy, namely Virginia, Florida …

An Approach To Detecting Crowd Anomalies For Entrance And Checkpoint Security, Holly Zelnio Oct 2012

An Approach To Detecting Crowd Anomalies For Entrance And Checkpoint Security, Holly Zelnio

Theses

This thesis develops an approach for detecting behavioral anomalies using tracks of pedestrians, including specified threat tracks. The application area is installation security with focus on monitoring the entrances of these installations. The approach specifically allows operator interaction to specify threats and to interactively adjust the system parameters depending on the context of the situation. This research has discovered physically meaningful features that are developed and organized in a manner so that features can be systematically added or deleted depending on the situation and operator preference. The features can be used with standard classifiers such as the one class support …

Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Stimulates Myostatin Expression In C2c12 Cells, Arun K. Das, Qi Yuan Yang, Xing Fu, Jun Fang Liang, Marcio S. Duarte, Mei Jun Zhu, Grant D. Trobridge, Min Du

Faculty Publications

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a master regulator of energy metabolism in skeletal muscle; AMPK induces muscle protein degradation but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Myostatin is a powerful negative regulator of skeletal muscle mass and growth in mammalian species. We hypothesized that AMPK stimulates myostatin expression, which provides an explanation for the negative role of AMPK in muscle growth. The objective of this study is to demonstrate that AMPK stimulates myostatin expression using C2C12 cells as a model. Activation of AMPK by 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide-1-β- d-riboruranoside (AICAR.) dramatically increased the mRNA expression and protein content of myostatin in C2C12 myotubes, and …

The Obama/Romney Amendments, David Gray Adler Oct 2012

The Obama/Romney Amendments, David Gray Adler

University Author Recognition Bibliography: 2011 - 2012

Occasionally, a candidate for the White House will deliver a penetrating critique of presidential assertions of authority in the realm of foreign affairs. Ohio Sen. Robert Taft, who might have made a fine president had it not been his misfortune to run against Dwight Eisenhower in the 1952 Republican primary, brought considerable constitutional knowledge to the campaign trail. He rightly criticized President Harry Truman for his usurpation of the war power in plunging the United States into the Korean War without congressional authorization, as required by the Constitution.
