It Takes A Community: Civic Life And Community Involvement Among Coös County Youth, Justin R. Young

Carsey Publications

This brief explores the extent to which Coös County youth are involved in a variety of civic-related activities, with particular attention to the demographic and attitudinal factors associated with such participation. Author Justin Young reports that approximately 75 percent of Coös County youth report involvement in at least one type of civic-related activity. The types of activities varied by year in school. Eighth grad¬ers were more involved in 4-H, Scouts, church groups, and community center events, while twelfth graders volunteered more often and participated in community-service clubs. Former Gardner-Web Faculty Member Lansford Jolley Pens New Book, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

Gardner-Webb University alumnus and retired faculty member Lansford Jolley’s new book, “The Coed’s Mite,” may be fiction, but it’s apparent that parts of the story, including characters, locations, and plotlines are based on reality and even some GWU history. Jolley, a native of Boiling Springs, N.C., served as the University’s chair of the Department of Social Sciences for 33 years, where he taught history, sociology, and marriage and family, before retiring in 1992. Aspects of his new book bring historical moments of Gardner-Webb to life through the lives of main characters, Thomas and Ann.

Decommissioning Orleans Parish Prison: A Campaign To Build A Safer New Orleans / One Local Policy Step To Dismantle The Prison Industrial Complex, Tara M. Echo Oct 2012

Decommissioning Orleans Parish Prison: A Campaign To Build A Safer New Orleans / One Local Policy Step To Dismantle The Prison Industrial Complex, Tara M. Echo

Capstone Collection

Today, nearly two and a half million people in the U.S. are living in cages, with New Orleans holding the highest per capita rate of incarceration. While we have consistently seen that building cages does not bring us any closer to actualizing safety, the sheriff and other city officials of New Orleans justify a financially profitable plan to create more cages-to warehouse more of the city's people-in the name of safety.

Using an abolitionist framework, this paper examines safety by differentiating between contributing factors of being secure and factors which create harm in our communities. By tracing these factors to …

Economy, Jobs, And Healthcare Discussed By Gwu Experts As Election Day Nears, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

With just three weeks until Americans cast their ballots for local, state, and federal candidates, many citizens are viewing the national economy as a pivotal issue that could determine the outcome of the presidential election. To help citizens sort through the propaganda, faculty members of the Gardner-Webb University Godbold School of Business recently weighed in on the issues relating to business, job creation, and the overall economic health of the country. “Without taking a position with a particular party, the culmination of the campaign itself will be a start to ending so much uncertainty,” said GWU Assistant Professor Dr. William …

Libraries And Sustainable Scholarly Content, Marianne A. Buehler, Maria A. Jankowska

Library Faculty Presentations

This presentation discusses the role of libraries in promoting sustainable practices by creating and utilizing a scholarly model of highlighting intellectual content and communication in academia. University community members aspire to collaborate, share, and showcase their sustainability research, activities, and beyond, in an institutional repository. This is an opportunity for libraries to promote scholarly communication that encompasses employing and building upon existing sustainability intellectual content. Research is locally and globally available at no cost to the reader. The social equity quotient is robust, engaging the academic community and public to freely locate research in an open access environment.

Social Information Changes The Brain, Russell D. Fernald, Karen P. Maruska Oct 2012

Social Information Changes The Brain, Russell D. Fernald, Karen P. Maruska

Faculty Publications

Social animals live in complex physical and social environments requiring them to attend and rapidly respond to social and environmental information by changing their behavior. A key social influence is rank or status, a ubiquitous element in animal societies. Rank typically regulates access to reproduction and other resources, among other consequences for individuals. Because reproduction is arguably the most important event in any animals' life, understanding howreproduction is regulated by social status and related physiological factors can instruct our understanding of evolutionary change. This article reviews evidence from a model social system in which reproduction is tightly controlled by social …

The Maximum-Weight Stable Matching Problem: Duality And Efficiency, Xujin Chen, Guoli Ding, Xiaodong Hu, Wenan Zang Oct 2012

The Maximum-Weight Stable Matching Problem: Duality And Efficiency, Xujin Chen, Guoli Ding, Xiaodong Hu, Wenan Zang

Faculty Publications

Given a preference system (G,≺) and an integral weight function defined on the edge set of G (not necessarily bipartite), the maximum-weight stable matching problem is to find a stable matching of (G,≺) with maximum total weight. In this paper we study this NP-hard problem using linear programming and polyhedral approaches. We show that the Rothblum system for defining the fractional stable matching polytope of (G,≺) is totally dual integral if and only if this polytope is integral if and only if (G,≺) has a bipartite representation. We also present a combinatorial polynomial-time algorithm for the maximum-weight stable matching problem …

When Your Daddy Is Not Really Your Daddy: A Man Successfully Sues His Ex-Wife For Paternity Fraud Damages, Joanna L. Grossman Oct 2012

When Your Daddy Is Not Really Your Daddy: A Man Successfully Sues His Ex-Wife For Paternity Fraud Damages, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

What recourse, if any, should a man have when he is deceived into believing that he is the father of another man’s child? What if he marries the child’s mother? What if, when he divorces the child’s mother, he is ordered to pay child support? What if all this is discovered by the man only when the child is a teenager, and the revelation causes the child to break off ties with the man he had always called dad?

These were the facts before the Tennessee Supreme Court in a recent case, Hodge v. Craig, in which the court …
