Research outputs 2012

Background: Older adults free of dementia but with subjective memory complaints (SMC) or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are considered at increased risk of cognitive decline. Vascular risk factors (VRF), including hypertension, heart disease, smoking, hypercholesterolemia and lack of physical activity (PA) have been identified as modifiable risk factors contributing to cognitive decline, and white matter hyperintensities (WMH) are associated with VRF, SMC and cognitive impairment. Findings from a growing number of clinical trials with older adults are providing strong evidence for the benefits of physical activity for maintaining cognitive function, but few studies are investigating these benefits in high-risk populations. …

“Since The Fighting Stopped”: Changing Attitudes About Development In Rural Nepal, Christopher Butler Oct 2012

“Since The Fighting Stopped”: Changing Attitudes About Development In Rural Nepal, Christopher Butler

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

In the wake of a ten-year civil insurgency in Nepal, scholars are looking back into the conflict to understand the social transformations influenced by the rise of the Maoist party. Using Stacy Pigg’s three seminal articles on Nepal and development as a baseline, I explore data from 63 surveys recorded in the Jumla Village Development Committee in summer 2009 to understand how the Maoist presence altered rural attitudes about development and the Nepalese government. My data suggest that rural people have shifted from an expectation and reliance on the government and international aid and toward a cooperative and more self-sufficient …

What Can Found Art Teach Us About Comics?, Frank Bramlett Oct 2012

What Can Found Art Teach Us About Comics?, Frank Bramlett

English Faculty Publications

When I first learned about found poetry, I was taught that we could encounter poetry anywhere we went. Any text could be considered poetry even if it weren’t meant to be seen as such. Later on, I learned that found poetry is also poetry that is cobbled together from other kinds of texts. There is even poetry constructed out of the speech of Donald Rumsfeld, former U.S. Secretary of Defense.

Likewise, everyday objects that weren’t meant to be art can be transformed into art, one very famous example being a urinal ‘made into’ a fountain.

Nebraska’S Strategic Plan For Victims And Survivors Of Crime 2015 - 2020, Anne M. Hobbs, Lindsey Wylie, Sommer Fousek

Reports

The goal of Nebraska’s 2015 – 2020 Strategic Plan for Victims and Survivors of Crime (NSPVSC) is to provide recommendations to permanently improve and enhance services available to all victims of crime in Nebraska. The University of Nebraska Omaha, School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Juvenile Justice Institute began the comprehensive planning process in March 2015. In the nine months that followed, we received input from many individuals and agencies serving victims of crime in the state of Nebraska. To collect feedback, we held focus groups, attended individual meetings, surveyed agencies, surveyed victims, spoke on the phone with advocates, and …

Fear In Illinois: A Father's Grief, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

Like a prose poem, the passage leaped off of the page of the Lutheran and Missionary as I scanned the newspaper's columns. Sitting in the reading room of the Abdel Ross Wentz Library at the Lutheran Theological Seminary, my heart raced. It's not often that you find new words penned by someone you've been studying for years. [excerpt]
