Understanding Sharing Preferences And Behavior For Mhealth Devices, Aarathi Prasad, Jacob Sorber, Timothy Stablein, Denis Anthony, David Kotz Oct 2012

Understanding Sharing Preferences And Behavior For Mhealth Devices, Aarathi Prasad, Jacob Sorber, Timothy Stablein, Denis Anthony, David Kotz

Dartmouth Scholarship

mHealth devices offer many potential benefits to patients, health providers and others involved in the patients' healthcare. If patients are not in control of the collection and sharing of their personal health information, they will have privacy concerns even while enjoying the benefits of the devices. We investigated patients' willingness to share their personal health information, collected using mHealth devices, with their family, friends, third parties and the public. Our findings are based on a user study conducted with 41 participants. The best way to understand people's privacy concerns is to give them the opportunity to use the device and …

Reciprocal Colonization In The Irish Fairy Tales Of Lord Dunsany, Erin L. Sheley Oct 2012

Reciprocal Colonization In The Irish Fairy Tales Of Lord Dunsany, Erin L. Sheley

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Sheley’s interest is in how Dunsany’s inside–out Orientalist tales demonstrate or challenge theories of colonialism, anti–colonialism, and post–colonialism, delving into Dunsany’s history with W.B. Yeats and comparing his tales to Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children.

Grief Poignant As Joy: Dyscatastrophe And Eucatastrophe In A Song Of Ice And Fire, Susan Johnston

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Argues that though the series is incomplete at present, J.R.R. Tolkien’s concept of eucatastrophe and its dark twin, dyscatastrophe, can illuminate what Martin may be trying to accomplish in this bleak and bloody series and provide the reader with a way to understand its value and potential.

Port Management Improvement Strategies Based On Simulation Model, Wen-Chih Huang, Tu-Cheng Kuo, Ching-Tsyr Wu, Cheng-Chen Kuo Oct 2012

Port Management Improvement Strategies Based On Simulation Model, Wen-Chih Huang, Tu-Cheng Kuo, Ching-Tsyr Wu, Cheng-Chen Kuo

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Management performance of container terminal is an important factor of port competitiveness. In the past, ports had often increased performance by expanding the number of berths and equipment. However, recent global recession has significantly dampened the growth of the international trade. Thus, port authority must seek effective utilization of the capacities of its container terminals. Most ocean carriers in the Port of Kaohsiung in Taiwan rent multiple berths that are often dispersed to different container terminals, resulting in inefficient handling. Establishing terminal operators to optimize berth assignment may resolve this problem. The objective of this research is to construct a …

Performance Comparison Of The Stbc-Ofdm Decoders In A Fast Fading Channel, Chi-Min Li, Guo-Wei Li, Han-Yi Liu Oct 2012

Performance Comparison Of The Stbc-Ofdm Decoders In A Fast Fading Channel, Chi-Min Li, Guo-Wei Li, Han-Yi Liu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In a fast fading channel, the orthogonality of the two consecutive STBC-OFDM symbols will be destroyed and the received signals can not be perfectly separated. As a result, the bit error rate (BER) performance will be degraded seriously. In this paper, we analyze several co-channel interference (CCI) cancellation decoders for the STBC-OFDM in a fast fading channel including the Alamouti method, SIC method, ML method, DMLD method, and a proposed DZFD method. The proposed DZFD method has the advantage of reducing the computational complexity for the DMLD method. We also conduct the outdoor channel measurements to verify the CCI cancellation …

Effects Of Non-Newtonian Couple Stresses On The Dynamic Characteristics Of Wide Rayleigh Step Slider Bearings, Jaw-Ren Lin, Li-Ming Chu, Wei-Liang Liaw Oct 2012

Effects Of Non-Newtonian Couple Stresses On The Dynamic Characteristics Of Wide Rayleigh Step Slider Bearings, Jaw-Ren Lin, Li-Ming Chu, Wei-Liang Liaw

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

To provide more information in fluid-film lubricated bearings, the effects of non-Newtonian couple stresses on the dynamic characteristics of Rayleigh step slider bearings have been presented in this paper. According to the results, the effects of non-Newtonian couple stresses signify an improvement in the bearing characteristics. Comparing with the Newtonian-lubricant Rayleigh step bearing, the nonNewtonian couple stress effects provide an increase in the steady load-carrying capacity, the dynamic stiffness coefficient and the dynamic damping coefficient, as well as a reduction in the steady volume flow rate required. In order to guide the use of the present study, a numerical example …

Yggdrasil And The Stave Church, G. Ronald Murphy Oct 2012

Yggdrasil And The Stave Church, G. Ronald Murphy

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

In this excerpt from his book, Tree of Salvation, Murphy explores how those who introduced Christianity to Scandinavia deliberately adapted and “translated” Norse religious motifs and practices in two parallel ways—through literary works, especially as seen in the Heliand, but also through church art and architecture. In this illustrated essay, we can see how beliefs about Yggdrasil and Ragnarok are incorporated and transformed in the design and ornamentation of the unusual stave churches of Norway. The Steward, The King, And The Queen: Fealty And Love In Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings And In Sir Orfeo, Sue Bridgwater Oct 2012

The Steward, The King, And The Queen: Fealty And Love In Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings And In Sir Orfeo, Sue Bridgwater

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Finds connections between The Lord of the Rings and Tolkien’s long professional engagement with the medieval romance Sir Orfeo. Orfeo’s plot elements of a king’s separation from his queen and his testing of his steward are echoed (albeit in a somewhat fragmented way) and re–examined in the relationships of Aragorn, Arwen, and the house of the Stewards of Gondor.

The Wondrous Orientalism Of Lord Dunsany: Traditional And Non-Traditional Orientalist Narratives In The Book Of Wonder And Tales Of Wonder, Alyssa House-Thomas Oct 2012

The Wondrous Orientalism Of Lord Dunsany: Traditional And Non-Traditional Orientalist Narratives In The Book Of Wonder And Tales Of Wonder, Alyssa House-Thomas

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

In this study of Lord Dunsany’s “Oriental” fairy tales, House-Thomas divides Dunsany’s technique and aims into “traditional” Oriental tales, of the sort Edward Said describes in his theories of Western Orientalist art and literature, and non-traditional, post-modern tales in which Orientalism is turned upside-down and the West is turned into the Other. This paper won the Alexei Kondratiev Student Paper Award at the 2012 Mythcon in Berkeley.

Early evaluation of new drug entities for their potential to cause mitochondrial dysfunction is becoming an important task for drug development. Multi-parametric high-content screening (mp-HCS) of mitochondrial toxicity holds promise as a lead in-vitro strategy for drug testing and safety evaluations. In this study, we have developed a mp-HCS and multi-parametric data analysis scheme for assessing cell responses to induced mitochondrial perturbation. The mp-HCS measurements are shown to be robust enough to allow for quantitative comparison of biological systems with different metabolic pathways simulated by alteration of growth media. Substitution of medium glucose for galactose sensitized cells to drug action …

A Comprehensive Theoretical Study On The Rank Of The Integral Operators For Large-Scale Electrodynamic Analysis, Wenwen Chai, Dan Jiao Oct 2012

A Comprehensive Theoretical Study On The Rank Of The Integral Operators For Large-Scale Electrodynamic Analysis, Wenwen Chai, Dan Jiao

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We propose an analytical approach to study the rank of an integral operator, which is valid for an arbitrarily shaped object with an arbitrary electric size. With this analytical approach, we theoretically prove that for a prescribed error bound, the minimal rank of the interaction between two separated geometry blocks in an integral-equation operator, asymptotically, is a constant for 1-D distributions of source and observation points; grows very slowly with electric size as square root of the logarithm for 2-D distributions; and scales linearly with the electric size of the block diameter for 3-D problems. We thus prove the existence …

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

The development of new small molecule-based therapeutic drugs requires accurate quantification of drug bioavailability, biological activity and treatment efficacy. Rapidly measuring these endpoints is often hampered by the lack of efficient assay platforms with high sensitivity and specificity. Using an in vivo model system, we report a simple and sensitive liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry assay to quantify the bioavailability of a recently developed novel cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor VMY-1-103, a purvalanol B-based analog whose biological activity is enhanced via dansylation. We developed a rapid organic phase extraction technique and validated wide and functional VMY-1-103 distribution in various mouse tissues, consistent with …

Eastern Shore Stories: Technology, Place, And Local Culture, Patricia Bloxom Oct 2012

Eastern Shore Stories: Technology, Place, And Local Culture, Patricia Bloxom

Theses and Dissertations

The Eastern Shore of Virginia is a narrow peninsula separating the Chesapeake Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. Residents of the rural counties of Accomack and Northampton County share a strong sense of cultural identity based on geography, rooted in a distinct communal sense of place reinforced by an agricultural lifestyle. Storytelling around dinner tables and on front porches at dusk, speeches at high school graduations, family recipes talked through in a grandmother’s kitchen – it is through oral language that Eastern Shore people have primarily shared the knowledge that sustains their sense of communal identity. Oral knowledge of farming techniques …

Biology Faculty Publications

We characterized soil communities in the Mojave Desert across an elevation gradient. Our goal was to test the hypothesis that as soil quality improved with increasing elevation (due to increased productivity), the diversity of soil prokaryotes and nematodes would also increase. Soil organic matter and soil moisture content increased with elevation as predicted. Soil salinity did not correlate to elevation, but was highest at a mid-gradient, alluvial site. Soil nematode density, community trophic structure, and diversity did not show patterns related to elevation. Similar results were obtained for diversity of bacteria and archaea. Relationships between soil properties, nematode communities, and …
