All oral histories

Dr. Susan Anderson-Freed began teaching in the Sociology Department at Illinois Wesleyan University in 1977. A few years later she was reappointed to a position in the Computer Science program where she remained until her departure in 2008.

Anderson-Freed left teaching due to the effects of cancer treatments she was receiving and died on November 4, 2012. A long-time knitting enthusiast, she used the time of her treatments to design patterns and published two books on the subjects. Proceeds from these volumes, which have already been translated into several languages, are designated for the Community Cancer Center, Normal, Illinois. Her …

Use Of Exempt Wells As Natural Underground Storage And Recovery Systems, David G. Embleton Sep 2012

Use Of Exempt Wells As Natural Underground Storage And Recovery Systems, David G. Embleton

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

The water management practice of storing water underground for use during dry periods is a very effective technique that has been practiced for a long time. Another water management practice that has been around for a long time is collection of rainwater and storage of rainwater aboce ground. There have been significant advances more recently in our understanding of aquifer geology and technologies used for rainwater harvesting. This article combines our advance in knowledge of storing and recovery water from wells and new rainwater harvesting practices to recharge a low yielding exempt well with treated rainwater. The studies presented in …

Nanostructured Dielectric Materials For High Energy Density Multi Layer Ceramic Capacitors, Fatih Dogan Sep 2012

Nanostructured Dielectric Materials For High Energy Density Multi Layer Ceramic Capacitors, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A high energy density multilayer ceramic capacitor, having at least two electrode layers and at least one substantially dense polycrystalline dielectric layer positioned therebetween. The at polycrystalline dielectric layer has an average grain size of less than about 300 nanometers, a particle size distribution of between about 150 nanometers and about 3 micrometers, and a maximum porosity of about 1 percent. The dielectric layer is selected from the group including TiO2, BaTiO3, Al2O3, ZrO2, lead zirconium titanate, and combinations thereof and has a breakdown strength of at least about 1100 …

Structural Insight Into The Mechanism Of Oxygen Activation And Substrate Selectivity Of Flavin-Dependent N-Hydroxylating Monooxygenases, Stefano Franceschini, Michael Fedkenheuer, Nancy J. Vogelaar, Howard H. Robinson, Pablo Sobrado, Andrea Mattevi Sep 2012

Structural Insight Into The Mechanism Of Oxygen Activation And Substrate Selectivity Of Flavin-Dependent N-Hydroxylating Monooxygenases, Stefano Franceschini, Michael Fedkenheuer, Nancy J. Vogelaar, Howard H. Robinson, Pablo Sobrado, Andrea Mattevi

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

SidA from the human pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus catalyzes the generation of N5-hydroxyornithine in the biosynthesis of siderophores, a reaction essential for virulence. The crystal structures of SidA in complex with ornithine and lysine reveal the geometry of the interactions among flavin, NADP+, and the substrate amine group that underlie the hydroxylation reaction. The structural elucidation of the enzyme in complex with arginine provides insight into the role of electrostatics and hydrogen bonding in the mechanism of oxygen activation in this family of enzymes. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

School Teachers' Perspectives On Homework: A Comparative Study, Naglaa Fawzy Hassaan Sep 2012

School Teachers' Perspectives On Homework: A Comparative Study, Naglaa Fawzy Hassaan

Theses and Dissertations

Homework practices vary widely among teachers. Some teachers make well planned assignments that combine learning and pleasure. Others use homework as a routine to provide students with drills on important activities. These wide variations stem from the teachers' different attitudes and opinions on homework. This research examines the perspectives of teachers, working in schools operating in Egypt whether Languagel or International, on homework. It compares the view points and practices of teachers working in Egyptian Language Schools to those of teachers working in International Schools located in Cairo. The research addresses the question: What are teachers' perspectives and practices of …

The Density Of States In Gauge Theories, K Langfeld, B Lucini, A Rago Sep 2012

The Density Of States In Gauge Theories, K Langfeld, B Lucini, A Rago

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The density of states is calculated for a SU(2) and a compact U(1) lattice gauge theory using a modified version of the Wang-Landau algorithm. We find that the density of states of the SU(2) gauge theory can be reliably calculated over a range of 120,000 orders of magnitude for lattice sizes as big as 20^4. We demonstrate the potential of the algorithm by reproducing the SU(2) average action, its specific heat and the critical couplings of the weak first order transition in U(1).

The Impact Of An Extended Outdoor Residential Workshop On Urban Students’ Learning And Appreciation Of Biodiversity, Yael Wyner, Amy Berkov Sep 2012

The Impact Of An Extended Outdoor Residential Workshop On Urban Students’ Learning And Appreciation Of Biodiversity, Yael Wyner, Amy Berkov

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Courses that focus on local flora and fauna are no longer included in biology curricula; therefore most K-12 teachers lack the expertise to teach their students about local biodiversity. When teachers are unable to recognize the plants and animals in their own surroundings, threats to the environment and biodiversity will inevitably remain abstractions to students. In the summer of 2011, a five-day plant and insect biodiversity workshop engaging thirteen pre-service and in-service urban public school teachers and five undergraduate biology teaching assistants was held at a forest field station outside of New York City. The goals were to develop an …
