Participatory Action Research: Relevance And Use For Contemporary Nursing Research, Lorna Moxham Sep 2012

Participatory Action Research: Relevance And Use For Contemporary Nursing Research, Lorna Moxham

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: This paper will demonstrate how, using a collaborative, inclusive research methodology, positive impacts on clinical practice and enhanced client outcomes can be achieved.

Methods: A Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach was used to address a clinical issue within a pediatric unit. The nursing staff who were general trained recognized they did not have the clinical expertise to provide care for the increasing number of clients who were being admitted for mental health issues. This caused them distress and meant the clients were also not receiving optimum treatment. Clinicians contacted some academic staff they knew and together a research team …

Evaluating Scholarly Work Products Of The Dnp, Mary F. Terhaar

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: The nature of the work products accepted as evidence of scholarship by academic programs awarding practice doctorates is quite variable: that includes work products of DNP programs as well. Some require full dissertations in the model of PhD programs. Others require scholarly work in which students demonstrate mastery of the 14 essentials; and this work may involve data collection for research conducted by PhDs, collaboration in research conducted by faculty (Nykamp, et al, 2010), secondary analysis of extant data sets, scholarly papers, case studies (Mundinger, et al, 2009), or translation projects. Still others require supervised practice. Not all demand …

Utilization Of An Alternative Clinical Learning Environment For Foundations Of Nursing Ii Students In A Baccalaureate Nursing Program, Kelly J. Betts Sep 2012

Utilization Of An Alternative Clinical Learning Environment For Foundations Of Nursing Ii Students In A Baccalaureate Nursing Program, Kelly J. Betts

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Nursing faculty are faced with many challenges. One of the issues involves trying to provide nursing students with in-patient clinical experiences. In particular, faculty members struggle with the issue of not getting enough clinical slots in local area hospitals to meet the needs of the clinical requirements of the course. Nursing faculty are then faced with the challenge of creating alternative clinical learning environments that promote the fundamental nursing skills and critical thinking components that are essential to meet course objectives and promote efficiency in nursing skills. Many schools are relying on simulation labs and other sources of simulated clinical …

Mom-To-Mom: A Program To Mentor And Support Pregnant Women Whose Spouses Are Deployed To The Combat Zone, Teresa W. Ryan, Karen L. Weis Sep 2012

Mom-To-Mom: A Program To Mentor And Support Pregnant Women Whose Spouses Are Deployed To The Combat Zone, Teresa W. Ryan, Karen L. Weis

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: For all women, maternal psychosocial adaptation occurs throughout pregnancy and into the postpartum period. Researchers studying non-military pregnant women have demonstrated that support from a role model provides information and validation for the changes the gravida experiences prenatally and postnatally. Researchers have only begun to study the effects of prenatal psychosocial adaptation in women within the military setting. Weis, Lederman, Lilly & Schaffer (2008) found gravidas having deployed military husbands had greater conflict with their prenatal maternal adaptation (pregnancy acceptance and identifying with their maternal role) than pregnant military wives without deployed husbands.

Methods: This study was designed to …

Using The Glasgow Coma Scale In Non-Neurological Clinical Areas, Tracey Thornley, Lauren Rullis

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) was designed for use in a wide range of clinical environments with staff that had no special training (Teasdale and Jennett 1974). Evidence (Waterhouse 2007 and 2008) suggests however that there are ongoing problems with the use of the GCS assessment, and the impact that this might have on patient outcome is unknown. Variations in practice have been found in all areas, including the neurological specialties wards, however the skill level of nursing staff in non neurological areas is concerning with inconsistency in practice. The purpose of this project was to explore the use …

Competency-Based Public Health Clinical Educational Strategies, Marjorie A. Schaffer, Patricia Schoon, Carolyn Marie Cesario Sep 2012

Competency-Based Public Health Clinical Educational Strategies, Marjorie A. Schaffer, Patricia Schoon, Carolyn Marie Cesario

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Challenges facing nursing educators and public health agencies in preparing a public health nursing workforce for the 21st century include a lack of clinical sites, competition between schools of nursing for public health learning experiences, and a lack of experience in public health nursing practice or education among nursing faculty. A consortium of nursing educators and practicing public health nurses developed eleven population-based public health nursing competencies for entry level practice. The competencies resulted from a thorough review and analysis of existing standards and competencies for public health nursing practice by nursing educators and public health nurses (PHNs) in practice. …
