From Profane To Divine: The Hegemonic Appropriation Of Pagan Imagery Into Eastern Christian Hymnody, Jordan Lippert Oct 2012

From Profane To Divine: The Hegemonic Appropriation Of Pagan Imagery Into Eastern Christian Hymnody, Jordan Lippert

Scripps Senior Theses

Spanning the first seven centuries of Christianity, this paper explores how Eastern Christian and Byzantine hymn chant was developed alongside pagan and Jewish worship traditions around the Near East. Comparison of hymns by Christian composers such as St. Romanos the Melodist and pagan poetry reveals many similarities in the types of metaphorical imagery used in both religious expressions. Common in Christian hymn texts, well-known metaphors, like the “Light of God,” are juxtaposed with pagan mythological gods, such as Apollo and Helios. This paper attempts to explain how and why Christians appropriated and adopted ancient pagan imagery into the burgeoning musical …

A Unified Approach To Generalized Stirling Functions, Tian-Xiao He Oct 2012

A Unified Approach To Generalized Stirling Functions, Tian-Xiao He

Scholarship

Here presented is a unified approach to generalized Stirling functions by using generalized factorial functions, $k$-Gamma functions, generalized divided difference, and the unified expression of Stirling numbers defined in \cite{He11}. Previous well-known Stirling functions introduced by Butzer and Hauss \cite{BH93}, Butzer, Kilbas, and Trujilloet \cite{BKT03} and others are included as particular cases of our generalization. Some basic properties related to our general pattern such as their recursive relations, generating functions, and asymptotic properties are discussed, which extend the corresponding results about the Stirling numbers shown in \cite{HS98} to the defined Stirling functions.

Correlation And Regression, Donal O'Brien, Pamela Sharkey Scott Oct 2012

Correlation And Regression, Donal O'Brien, Pamela Sharkey Scott

Books/Book Chapters

A correlation is a measure of the linear relationship between two variables. It is used when a
researcher wishes to describe the strength and direction of the relationship between two
normally continuous variables. The statistic obtained is Pearson’s product-moment
correlation (r), and SPSS also provides the statistical significance of r. In addition, if the
researcher needs to explore the relationship between two variables while statistically
controlling for a third variable, partial correlation can be used. This is useful when it is
suspected that the relationship between two variables may be influenced, or confounded, byA correlation is a measure of the …

Developing Strategy From The Middle:Subsidiary Strategy And The Role Of The Subsidiary General Manager, Donal O'Brien, Pamela Sharkey Scott, Patrick Gibbons Oct 2012

Developing Strategy From The Middle:Subsidiary Strategy And The Role Of The Subsidiary General Manager, Donal O'Brien, Pamela Sharkey Scott, Patrick Gibbons

Conference Papers

The multinational subsidiary is a unique context to study management processes relating to strategy but so far, there has not been a coherent approach identifiable in the literature. It is recognised that subsidiaries evolve over time and through their own actions and initiatives have the potential to modify the power structures of the Multinational Enterprise (MNE) but little is known about the role of the subsidiary manager in this process. We suggest that the tensions between the headquarters perspective and the subsidiary perspective have resulted in the application of inappropriate frameworks to the study of subsidiary managers. This proposal presents …

Design And Test Of A Linear Switched Reluctance Generator For Use In Wave-Energy Applications, Garret Brady, Cathal O'Loughlin, John Massey, David Griffiths, Carlos Villegas

Conference Papers

This paper describes the design of a double-sided linear switched reluctance generator for use in wave energy applications, and the build and test of a working bench-scale prototype. Beginning with a standard shape, the development of the design, from concept to detail, is presented. Numerical simulation results – magnetic, mechanical and electrical – inform the detailed design. Construction of the generator and test rig is described. Experimental results give good agreement with simulation predictions.

From Financing Social Insurance To Insuring Financial Markets: The Socialisation Of Risk And The Privatisation Of Profit In An Age Of Irresponsibility, Simon Lee, Richard Woodward Oct 2012

From Financing Social Insurance To Insuring Financial Markets: The Socialisation Of Risk And The Privatisation Of Profit In An Age Of Irresponsibility, Simon Lee, Richard Woodward

Books/Book Chapters

Commentaries on the financial meltdown that began with Lehman Brothers’ collapse in September 2008 trace its origins to greedy bankers exploiting lax regulatory practices to take excessive risks through exotic and arcane financial instruments. While not wishing to demur from this analysis this chapter takes issue with the frequent failure to acknowledge that this has come about as a consequence of the (mis)application of state power over the past 50 years (see Helleiner 1994). Starting with the tacit support for the development of the Euromarkets in the 1960s and culminating with the responses to the turmoil of 2008-2010 the chapter …

A Theoretical Framework For Serious Game Design: Exploring Pedagogy, Play And Fidelity And Their Implications For The Design Process, Pauline Rooney Oct 2012

A Theoretical Framework For Serious Game Design: Exploring Pedagogy, Play And Fidelity And Their Implications For The Design Process, Pauline Rooney

Journal Articles

It is widely acknowledged that digital games can provide an engaging, motivating and “fun” experience for students. However an entertaining game does not necessarily constitute a meaningful, valuable learning experience. For this reason, experts espouse the importance of underpinning serious games with a sound theoretical framework which integrates and balances theories from two fields of practice: pedagogy and game design (Kiili, 2005; Seeney & Routledge, 2009). Additionally, with the advent of sophisticated, immersive technologies, and increasing interest in the opportunities for constructivist learning offered by these technologies, concepts of fidelity and its impact on student learning and engagement, have emerged …

Characterization And Normal Measurements Of The Left Ventricular Outflow Tract By Ecg-Gated Cardiac Ct: Implications For Disorders Of The Outflow Tract And Aortic Valve., Ethan J Halpern, Shiva Gupta, David J Halpern, David H Wiener, Alyson N Owen

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Studies suggest that electrocardiographically gated coronary computed tomographic angiography provides a clear definition of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT), and normal LVOT morphology may not be round, as assumed when the continuity equation is applied during echocardiography. The aims of this study were to demonstrate the morphology of the LVOT on coronary computed tomographic angiography and to establish normal values for LVOT measurements.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two independent readers retrospectively measured anterior-posterior (AP) and transverse diameters of the LVOT and performed LVOT planimetry on coronary computed tomographic angiographic studies of 106 consecutive patients with normal aortic …

Are Jurisprudential Debates Conceptual?: Some Lessons From Democratic Theory, Dan Priel Oct 2012

Are Jurisprudential Debates Conceptual?: Some Lessons From Democratic Theory, Dan Priel

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The dominant view among legal philosophers is that jurisprudential debates about the nature of law are conceptual. In this article I challenge this view. I do so by comparing these debates to debates about the justification of democracy and showing that the arguments found in both are often very similar. I demonstrate that in both domains, there are arguments on one side that explain an institution (either law or democracy) in terms of its ability to help people lead a better life, and there are arguments on the other side that highlight the value of these institutions in promoting political …

Academic Success Factors Influencing Linguistically Diverse And Native English Speaking Associate Degree Nursing Students, Josie Lynn Veal Oct 2012

Academic Success Factors Influencing Linguistically Diverse And Native English Speaking Associate Degree Nursing Students, Josie Lynn Veal

Dissertations (1934 -)

To address the healthcare needs of vulnerable populations, nursing educators should evaluate educational preparedness and identify which factors influence a successive academic trajectory in nursing school. A prospective design was used to determine the relationships and differences among the anatomy and physiology course grade, self-efficacy, linguistic diversity, language acculturation, and components of the National League for Nursing pre-admission exam for registered nurses and first semester nursing course grades of linguistically diverse and native English speaking associate degree nursing students.

A relationship exists between the PAX-RN composite score, anatomy mean grade, language diversity, and general self-efficacy score, the Nursing Pharmacology and …

Standing In The Footprints Of The Contemporary Urban Child: Constructing A Sense Of Place Along The Everyday Urban Routes Children Walk Through Public Space., Jackie Bourke

Doctoral

This study investigates children’s perspectives on how they experience their everyday walks through a city neighbourhood in Dublin, Ireland. Of particular interest in this research are the children’s views on the urban public realm which they traverse daily on their walks to school and various other destinations. Having once been considered the domain of children (Karsten 2005) public space is now socially constructed as adult space (Aitken 2001) and there is a concern that children are disappearing from the city (Ward 1990; Valentine 2004). The focus of this research is the children who still access the public realm regularly, and …

"Oh, Those Loud Black Girls!": A Phenomenological Study Of Black Girls Talking With An Attitude, Jacqueline B. Koonce

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

Current research suggests that it is imperative for researchers and educators to pay more attention to the needs of African American adolescent girls and how their race and gender affect schooling (Fordham, 1993; Morris, 2007). The purpose of this study was to highlight the lived experiences of two African American adolescent girls when they used the African American women's speech practice, "Talking with an Attitude" (TWA), with their teachers. Using phenomenology and Afrocentric feminist epistemology as methodological and theoretical approaches, interviews were used to collect and analyze data that revealed the nature of their lived experiences. Van Manen's description of …

High School Teachers' Perceptions Of Inclusion, Carmen Wiggins Oct 2012

High School Teachers' Perceptions Of Inclusion, Carmen Wiggins

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

With the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind, school systems must ensure students with disabilities receive instruction in general education classrooms. Implementing the inclusion model has been challenging for many school systems as the systems try to find ways to meet the needs of their diverse student populations. The purpose of this quantitative casual-comparative and correlational study is to identify high school teachers' perceptions of inclusion. One hundred seventy-three high school teachers from six school districts located in a southeastern metropolitan area completed a survey to allow the researcher to examine if a relationship existed between teachers' perceptions of inclusion …

Search For Gravitational Waves Associated With Gamma-Ray Bursts During Ligo Science Run 6 And Virgo Science Runs 2 And 3, J. Abadie, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present the results of a search for gravitational waves associated with 154 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that were detected by satellite-based gamma-ray experiments in 2009-2010, during the sixth LIGO science run and the second and third Virgo science runs. We perform two distinct searches: a modeled search for coalescences of either two neutron stars or a neutron star and black hole, and a search for generic, unmodeled gravitational-wave bursts. We find no evidence for gravitational-wave counterparts, either with any individual GRB in this sample or with the population as a whole. For all GRBs we place lower bounds on the …

Random Fields At A Nonequilibrium Phase Transition, Hatem Barghathi, Thomas Vojta Oct 2012

Random Fields At A Nonequilibrium Phase Transition, Hatem Barghathi, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study nonequilibrium phase transitions in the presence of disorder that locally breaks the symmetry between two equivalent macroscopic states. In low-dimensional equilibrium systems, such random-field disorder is known to have dramatic effects: it prevents spontaneous symmetry breaking and completely destroys the phase transition. In contrast, we show that the phase transition of the one-dimensional generalized contact process persists in the presence of random-field disorder. The ultraslow dynamics in the symmetry-broken phase is described by a Sinai walk of the domain walls between two different absorbing states. We discuss the generality and limitations of our theory, and we illustrate our …

Controlled Spatial Switching And Routing Of Surface Plasmons In Designed Single-Crystalline Gold Nanostructures, Rolf Kӧnenkamp, Robert Campbell Word, Joseph Fitzgerald, Athavan Nadarajah, S. D. Saliba

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Electron emission microscopy is used to visualize plasmonic routing in gold nano-structures. We show that in single-crystalline gold structures reliable routing can be achieved with polarization switching. The routing is due to the polarization dependence of the photon-to-plasmon coupling, which controls the mode distribution in the plasmonic gold film. We use specifically designed, single-crystalline planar structures. In these structures, the plasmon propagation length is sufficiently large such that significant plasmon power can be delivered to the near-field region around the end tips of the router. Solid state devices based on internal electron excitation and emission processes appear feasible.
