Impact Of Abrupt Stratospheric Dynamical Change On Tropical Tropopause Layer, Nawo Eguchi, Kunihiko Kodera, Tomoe Nasuno Oct 2012

Impact Of Abrupt Stratospheric Dynamical Change On Tropical Tropopause Layer, Nawo Eguchi, Kunihiko Kodera, Tomoe Nasuno

U.S. - Japan Bilateral Workshop on the Tropical Tropopause Layer: State of the Current Science and Future Observational Needs

We have studied the impact of stratospheric circulation change on water vapor in the Tropical Tropopause Layer (TTL) during the stratospheric sudden warming (SSW) events (e.g., Eguchi and Kodera, 2010). Increased Brewer-Dobson circulation associated with SSW produces cooling in the tropical lower stratosphere (LS). The cooling generally produces more cirrus clouds and decreases of the water vapor mixing ratio (WV) in the TTL, except for some regions over Africa and South American continents where penetrating clouds are expected. This time, we found a new stratospheric phenomenon which produces abrupt warming in the tropical stratosphere converse to the SSW event. The …

Public Speaking Catch Phrase: Reinforcing Good Public Speaking Skills Through An Interactive In-Class Gaming Experience, Rannie Teodoro Oct 2012

Public Speaking Catch Phrase: Reinforcing Good Public Speaking Skills Through An Interactive In-Class Gaming Experience, Rannie Teodoro

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Public Speaking Catch Phrase is an interactive in-classroom game derived out of the word guessing party game, Catch Phrase. Public Speaking Catch Phrase intends to make students aware of their communication habits and to develop and reinforce good public speaking skills. Speakers, or “clue-givers,” from two teams will alternate turns and deliver clues to get their team to say the words displayed on the electronic game device. However, students must follow “rules” promoting good public speaking practices in order to receive points. This includes maximizing metaphors and punctuation with gestures, and minimizing non-words (e.g., “um,” “uh,” “er”) and fluency disruptions …

Misunderstood: The Matthew Shepherd Hate Crime And Its Intercultural Implications, Cameron Muir Oct 2012

Misunderstood: The Matthew Shepherd Hate Crime And Its Intercultural Implications, Cameron Muir

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

The increasing vocalization by both supporters and opponents of homosexual rights has launched the topic into the spotlight, reenergizing a vibrant discussion that personally affects millions of Americans and which will determine the direction in which U.S. national policy will develop. This essay serves as a continuation of this discussion, using the Matthew Shepherd Hate crime, which occurred in October of 1998, as a focal point around which a detailed analysis of homophobia and masculinity in American culture will emerge.

In Or Out? Experiential Learning And Three Consequences Of Communicating Group Identity, Anastacia Kurylo, Kelli Coghill, Katrina Comber, Fernando Taveras Oct 2012

In Or Out? Experiential Learning And Three Consequences Of Communicating Group Identity, Anastacia Kurylo, Kelli Coghill, Katrina Comber, Fernando Taveras

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Group identity is intimately tied with self identity. Yet, people often understand their identity as individual without appreciation for the role others play in their identity. Based on social identity theory this article highlights the role that group identity plays in self identity and explores three consequences of this association. Case studies present first-hand experience with the consequences of communicating group identity. These case studies also demonstrate the value of a specific class project undertaken to provide students with a meaningful understanding of these issues.

“Phone Home”: Remote Parenting Across National Borders – Jamaican Students In North America And The Role Of Mobile Communication Devices, Marian Stewart Titus

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

This study presents a snapshot of geographically distributed families and how they use information and communication technologies (ICTs). The setting is in the Caribbean nation of Jamaica, and by way of qualitative interviews with eleven parents, the study explores the extent to which Jamaican parents communicate with their adolescents overseas using ICTs. Despite the barriers of distance, the parents were able to maintain strong emotional bonds with their adolescents overseas, and used mobile phones and voice over Internet protocols to enact a virtual co-presence with their children, as well as to maintain existing, and create new family rituals. The study …

Digital Death: The Failures, Struggles And Discourses Of The Social Media Spectacle, Maxwell Foxman Oct 2012

Digital Death: The Failures, Struggles And Discourses Of The Social Media Spectacle, Maxwell Foxman

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Celebrities have always capitalized upon various media to give voice and substance to their own mute causes. From Live Aid to PBS fundraisers, they have utilized their public personae to support the downtrodden, sick and underprivileged. However, in December of 2010, when Alicia Keys and over a dozen other celebrities banded together to raise money for World AIDS Day by eradicating their Twitter and other social media profiles, their much-hyped campaign to raise one million dollars fell short of its goal by nearly half. This paper explores the discourses surrounding the Digital Death "Pseudo-Event," and the effects of the disjuncture …

The Good, The Bad, And The Bluths: Arrested Development As A Modern Allegory, Thomas Felty Oct 2012

The Good, The Bad, And The Bluths: Arrested Development As A Modern Allegory, Thomas Felty

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Allegroies are often seen as an archiac form of narrative expression. Yet the the basic concepts about human morality remain universal sources of artistic inspiratiojn thousands of years later. This piece gives a brief history of allegorical storytelling from the Middle Ages up through the Twentienth Century focusing on the Seven Deadly Sins. The second half of the piece gives an in depth analysis of the television program, Arrested Development, assigning each character a feature found with the Seven Deadly Sins often found in traditonal allegorical storytelling. The piece concludes with an explanation of why such methods are still …

Volatility And Composition Of Ttl Aerosols By Balloon-Borne In-Situ Observation, Masahiko Hayashi Oct 2012

Volatility And Composition Of Ttl Aerosols By Balloon-Borne In-Situ Observation, Masahiko Hayashi

U.S. - Japan Bilateral Workshop on the Tropical Tropopause Layer: State of the Current Science and Future Observational Needs

Tandem optical particle counters (OPC) were launched by balloon, from Biak 1 0 S, 136 0 E in January 2011 and 2012. One of the tandem OPC directly observed size distribution of aerosols of 0.3 – 7 µm in diameter, and another one observed size distributions in heated conditions of 100 0 , 150 0 , and 200 0 C through thermodenuder, to observe volatility of TTL aerosols. Most of TTL aerosol smaller than 0.8 µm in diameter show high volatility, suggesting to be composed of sulfuric acid or sulfate. There also exist non-volatile particles larger than 0.8 µm in …

Cloud-Top Height Dataset By Geostationary Satellite Split Window Measurements Trained With Cloudsat Data, Noriyuki Nishi Oct 2012

Cloud-Top Height Dataset By Geostationary Satellite Split Window Measurements Trained With Cloudsat Data, Noriyuki Nishi

U.S. - Japan Bilateral Workshop on the Tropical Tropopause Layer: State of the Current Science and Future Observational Needs

Lookup tables for estimating the cloud-top height (CTOP) and visible optical thickness of uppertropospheric clouds by the infrared brightness temperature (TB) at 10.8 μm (T11) and its difference from TB at 12 μm (DT11-12) measured by geostationary satellites are developed (Hamada and Nishi 2010, JAMC). These lookup tables were constructed by regressing the cloud radar measurements by the CloudSat satellite over the infrared measurements by the Japanese geostationary multifunctional transport satellite MTSAT-1R and MTSAT-2. The CTOP is available at http://database.rish.kyoto-u.ac.jp/arch/ctop/ since July 2005. The data have good precision for cirrus clouds (τ > ~3) that have large DT11-12 values and are …

Quantifying The Deep Convective Temperature Signal Within The Tropical Tropopause Layer (Ttl), Thomas Birner Oct 2012

Quantifying The Deep Convective Temperature Signal Within The Tropical Tropopause Layer (Ttl), Thomas Birner

U.S. - Japan Bilateral Workshop on the Tropical Tropopause Layer: State of the Current Science and Future Observational Needs

Dynamics on a vast range of spatial and temporal scales, from individual convective plumes to planetary-scale circulations, play a role in driving the temperature variability in the tropical tropopause layer (TTL). Here, we aim to better quantify the deep convective temperature signal within the TTL using multiple datasets. First, we investigate the link between ozone and temperature in the TTL using the Southern Hemisphere Additional Ozonesondes (SHADOZ) dataset. Low ozone concentrations in the TTL are indicative of deep convective transport from the boundary layer. We confirm the usefulness of ozone as an indicator of deep convection by identifying a typical …

Managing Catalog Departments, Or, The Accidental Leader, Robert L. Bothmann, Rebecca Lubas

OLAC Conferences

You've found yourself playing a leadership role in cataloging, or would like to pursue a leadership role. Many of us come to this point in our careers because we've been good catalogers -- we know our subject area, we're on top of the standards. But much of our cataloging training is focused on the work itself, and not on management on a macroscale. What are the issues managers of cataloging departments face?

Our workshop will help you think about these issues, and give you practical advice and tips to take home and use, whether you are a newbie or experienced …

Effective Outreach Strategy And Programs In Higher Education, Kimberly Byrd, Wendy Achilles, Jaclyn Felder-Strauss, Paul Franklin, Joan Janowich Oct 2012

Effective Outreach Strategy And Programs In Higher Education, Kimberly Byrd, Wendy Achilles, Jaclyn Felder-Strauss, Paul Franklin, Joan Janowich

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Outreach programs have been implemented in higher learning institutions to increase student retention and satisfaction. The challenges of outreach can increase when students are in an online environment. Online students do not have physical contact with their instructor and classmates and this can cause students to feel isolated and discouraged. Online higher learning institutions can approach outreach at various levels: no formalized outreach program for instructors, a formalized outreach program for instructors incorporating required outreach periodically throughout the course for at risk students, or a formalized outreach program for instructors incorporating weekly outreach throughout the course for at risk students. …

Drinking Games As A Venue For Sexual Competition, Liana S. E. Hone Oct 2012

Drinking Games As A Venue For Sexual Competition, Liana S. E. Hone

Open Access Theses

Based on sexual selection theory, I hypothesized that sex differences in sexual restrictiveness and social competitiveness—and sex differences in sexual and competitive motivations for participating in drinking games—are responsible for the sex differences in increases in drinking game behaviors over a twelve-week period. Participants were 133 women and 128 men enrolled in an introductory psychology course at the University of Miami. I found that men increased in frequency of drinking game participation and quantity of alcohol consumed during participation more so than did women. I also found that sex differences in increases in frequency of drinking game participation were partially …

Role Of Soluble Adenylyl Cyclase In Neuronal Survival And Regeneration, Raul G. Corredor Oct 2012

Role Of Soluble Adenylyl Cyclase In Neuronal Survival And Regeneration, Raul G. Corredor

Open Access Dissertations

Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) as well as other CNS neurons do not regenerate after injury and die soon after. While significant progress has been made in understanding the molecular basis for this lack of regenerative ability, this knowledge has not been enough to generate effective therapeutic strategies to promote axonal regeneration or prevent cell death after injury. Multiple signaling pathways are involved in neuronal survival and growth, but particular importance has been attributed to the role of the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) pathway and electrical activity in modulating these processes. cAMP works with other signaling pathways, growth factors, and electrical …

Perversion Of Justice: A Double Murder In Henry County Re-Examined, Donald E. Wilkes Jr. Oct 2012

Perversion Of Justice: A Double Murder In Henry County Re-Examined, Donald E. Wilkes Jr.

Popular Media

Charles L. Sargent, a retired Georgia businessman, has written a book that everyone should read and none should forget. It is (amazingly) the first book ever written about one of the most shocking perversions of criminal justice in the history of this state. Sins of Henry County (privately published, available from Amazon, 2012) tells the true but terrifying and tragic story of an innocent man who was railroaded by corrupt police and sent to Georgia’s death row, and of the brutal double murder for which he was framed: execution-style killings which remain unsolved after nearly 40 years.

Tony Award-Winning Musical “The Drowsy Chaperone” Performed At Lawrence University, Lawrence University Oct 2012

Tony Award-Winning Musical “The Drowsy Chaperone” Performed At Lawrence University, Lawrence University

Press Releases

Four performances of Lawrence University’s production of the Tony Award-winning musical “The Drowsy Chaperone” will be staged Oct. 25-27 in Stansbury Theatre of the Music-Drama Center.

A “musical within a comedy,” “The Drowsy Chaperone” parodies 1920s musicals with a show-within-a-show plot device. The show begins in the apartment of a character known only to the audience as Man in Chair, an agoraphobic Broadway fanatic who has acquired a recording of a fictional 1928 musical titled “The Drowsy Chaperone.” As he listens to the record, the musical’s characters appear in his apartment to tell the farcical story of fiancés Janet Van …
