Hawking Sonified: The Composition Of A Pattern/Pulse Piece That Illuminates The Lectures Of Stephen Hawking, Lawrence W. Moore Oct 2012

Hawking Sonified: The Composition Of A Pattern/Pulse Piece That Illuminates The Lectures Of Stephen Hawking, Lawrence W. Moore

Open Access Dissertations

Hawking Sonified is a piece composed in homage to the great cosmologist and theoretical physicist, Stephen Hawking. The piece is a four movement work that musically illuminates four selected lectures given by Professor Hawking in his own, uniquely synthesized voice. The compositional approaches are indicative of the Pattern/Pulse school of minimalistic composition. Palsplit 2 and Palsplit 4, the software environments used to compose the piece were created by Lawrence Moore using the Pure Data computer music programming language. The software modules contained achieve the musical effects through looping recorded lecture examples at various intervals and processing the audio through band …

Food Insecurity Across The First Five Years: Triggers Of Onset And Exit, Alison Jacknowitz, Taryn W. Morrissey Oct 2012

Food Insecurity Across The First Five Years: Triggers Of Onset And Exit, Alison Jacknowitz, Taryn W. Morrissey

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Very low food security among young children is associated with developmental deficiencies. However, little is known about the factors that predict entry into or exit from very low food security during early childhood. This study seeks to: (1) Understand the triggers that explain movements into or out of very low food security among children from birth to age five; (2) Examine the first aim using different definitions of food insecurity. The analysis relies on the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort (ECLS-B), a longitudinal, nationally representative dataset of approximately 10,700 children, to estimate linear probability models. Results suggest that residential moves …

Brainstorm: Head Injuries And The Nfl, Part 10: The Tau Of Cte, Continued, John J. Medina Ph.D.

Brainstorm

In our last installment, I wrote about a protein called tau, which necessitated talking about salt. I said that when neurons suffer the types of injury associated with CTE, part of the damage occurs because of a change in salt distribution between the inside of a neuron and its immediate outer exterior.

Evaluation Of A Child Abuse Prevention Home Visitation Program Using Predictive Discriminant Analysis To Identify Reasons For Early Departure, Kristin Woods

Faculty Articles & Research

A formative evaluation of a state sponsored child abuse prevention program that focuses on first time mothers who are past their 29th week of pregnancy. The goals of the program are to improve the primary caregiver’s health, improve the health and development of the child, to enhance family functioning and stability, to teach positive parenting techniques, and to teach safety practices to all family members. The purpose of this evaluation is to identify variables that differentiate clients who complete the program from those who do not continue in the program past the child’s third birthday. A predictive discriminant analysis was …

The radial velocity-discovered exoplanet HD 97658b was recently announced to transit, with a derived planetary radius of 2.93 ± 0.28 R⊕. As a transiting super-Earth orbiting a bright star, this planet would make an attractive candidate for additional observations, including studies of its atmospheric properties. We present and analyze follow-up photometric observations of the HD 97658 system acquired with the Microvariability and Oscillations of STars space telescope. Our results show no transit with the depth and ephemeris reported in the announcement paper. For the same ephemeris, we rule out transits for a planet with radius larger than 2.09 R⊕, corresponding …

Velocity Plateaus In Traveling-Wave Electrophoresis, R. Correll, Boyd F. Edwards Oct 2012

Velocity Plateaus In Traveling-Wave Electrophoresis, R. Correll, Boyd F. Edwards

All Physics Faculty Publications

One-dimensional models are used to study traveling-wave electrophoresis, a tunable method for separating charged analytes. A traveling-electrode model reveals the mechanism for longitudinal oscillations. A stationary-electrode model explains the origin of mode-locked plateaus in the average velocity, predicts devil's staircases with nested Farey sequences, and reduces to a continuum sinusoidal model in the high electrode-density limit. © 2012 American Physical Society.

Eating Behaviors Of Older Adults Participating In Government-Sponsored Programs With Different Demographic Backgrounds, Yeon Bai, Shahla M. Wunderlich, Joseph Brusca, Johnson-Austin Marti, Michelle O'Malley

Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works

The purpose of this study was to determine the food behaviors of nutritionally high-risk seniors as a function of their racial background, gender, marital status, and education level. A total of 69 seniors were identified to be at high nutritional risk using the Nutrition Screening Initiative (NSI) checklist. A supplemental questionnaire (SQ) was created to examine the risk factors in relation to the participant’s demographic background. Key results indicated that Asians practiced healthy food behaviors and women were more likely to eat alone (p≤0.05). Married participants (90.9%) were most likely to consume 2 meals or more each day. College educated …
