Research Brief: "Risk Factors For Homelessness Among Women Veterans", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about the characteristics of female veterans who are affected by homelessness. In policy and practice, gender-specific care and treatment should be given to homeless female veterans since veteran women experience more homelessness than non-veteran women; policymakers should increase female-only homeless veteran programs and broaden transitional housing programs for female veterans who have experienced trauma. Suggestions for future research include analyzing non-institutionalized female veterans by having control groups in the study, expanding the sample to be more geographically representative, collecting data over a period of time, and finding job training, housing, and military sexual trauma treatment for homeless …

The Psychiatric Residual Effects From Methamphetamine Use, Janet Ann Larson Sep 2012

The Psychiatric Residual Effects From Methamphetamine Use, Janet Ann Larson

Theses and Dissertations

Psychiatric symptoms including psychosis and anxiety-like states have been linked to methamphetamine (MA) use, with severity of psychiatric symptoms has been correlated to duration of use. Prolonged psychiatric residual symptoms have been observed and reported, but there have been no studies that have examined residual effects beyond 12 months of abstinence. There are no studies to date which focus on anger, anxiety, and perception of stress as residual effects following 12 months of abstinence. The purpose of this study was to elucidate whether the critical variables of age, gender, and previous substance use influence the experience of anger, anxiety. and …

Trace Element Partitioning During Coal Combustion Using A New In Situ/ Direct Method, Anna Raeva Sep 2012

Trace Element Partitioning During Coal Combustion Using A New In Situ/ Direct Method, Anna Raeva

Theses and Dissertations

In this work, a novel in situ/direct method has been developed to simulate the partitioning and estimate the chemical speciation of three toxic semi-volatile trace elements (TEs), arsenic, antimony and selenium, during coal combustion. The method involves the use of a modified graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometer (GFAAS) as a simultaneous high temperature (up to 2800 °C) in situ pyrolysis simulator, sample collector and analytical platform. Several methods for calculating activation parameters were compared and a simple, yet accurate method was selected for calculations. It was shown that the activation parameters determined using this method are independent from instrument operational …

Mapping Civil Society: An Experiment In Ngo Coordination, Peter Carroll, Aradhana Dhakal, Madeleine Gleave Sep 2012

Mapping Civil Society: An Experiment In Ngo Coordination, Peter Carroll, Aradhana Dhakal, Madeleine Gleave

Library Research Grants

Our research considers the efficiency of the work of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the area of international development. Specifically it asks the question of whether reducing the costs of gathering information on other NGO projects increases NGOs’ propensity to coordinate among each other. We predict that decreasing information costs associated with communication gives greater incentive to pursue coordination. To test this hypothesis, we conduct a randomized field experiment in which we invite randomly assigned NGOs to use an online mapping tool providing information about NGO activities across Uganda and India. Our sample comes from NGOs that complete a survey on …

Heavy Metal Chemistry Of Sediments In Caves Of The Springfield Plateau, Missouri-Arkansas-Oklahoma: A Link To Subterranean Biodiversity, Travis M. Doughty, Aaron W. Johnson Sep 2012

Heavy Metal Chemistry Of Sediments In Caves Of The Springfield Plateau, Missouri-Arkansas-Oklahoma: A Link To Subterranean Biodiversity, Travis M. Doughty, Aaron W. Johnson

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

We used X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to compare the heavy metal chemistry of sediments in caves in rural and urban areas to the chemistry of sediments from a control cave in a relatively undisturbed watershed in the Springfield (MO) Plateau. Sediment from Smallin Cave near Ozark, MO, the control cave, has the smallest peak sizes for Zn and Mn and a moderately-sized Pb peak. Sediment from the rural cave exhibited larger peaks of Zn and Mn and a smaller Pb peak. Sediment from the urban cave had the largest Zn, Mn and Pb peaks. Interestingly, smaller peak sizes appear to correlate …

We have determined the angular diameters of two metal-poor stars, HD 122563 and Gmb 1830, using CHARA and Palomar Testbed Interferometer observations. For the giant star HD 122563, we derive an angular diameter θ3D = 0.940 ± 0.011 milliarcseconds (mas) using limb-darkening from 3D convection simulations and for the dwarf star Gmb 1830 (HD 103095) we obtain a 1D limb-darkened angular diameter θ1D = 0.679 ± 0.007 mas. Coupling the angular diameters with photometry yields effective temperatures with precisions better than 55 K (Teff = 4598 ± 41 K and 4818 ± 54 K - for the giant and the …

Comment On The Use Of Eminent Domain To Restructure Performing Loans, David J. Reiss Sep 2012

Comment On The Use Of Eminent Domain To Restructure Performing Loans, David J. Reiss

Cornell Law Faculty Working Papers

There has been a lot of fear-mongering by financial industry trade groups over the widespread use of eminent domain to residential mortgages. While there may be legitimate business reasons to oppose its use, its inconsistency with Takings jurisprudence should not be one of them. To date, the federal government’s responses to the current crisis in the housing markets have been at cross purposes, half-hearted and self-defeating. So it is not surprising that local governments are attempting to fashion solutions to the problem with the tools at their disposal. Courts should, and likely will, give these democratically-implemented and constitutionally-sound solutions a …

Robust Estimation Of Pure/Natural Direct Effects With Mediator Measurement Error, Eric J. Tchetgen Tchetgen, Sheng Hsuan Lin Sep 2012

Robust Estimation Of Pure/Natural Direct Effects With Mediator Measurement Error, Eric J. Tchetgen Tchetgen, Sheng Hsuan Lin

COBRA Preprint Series

Recent developments in causal mediation analysis have offered new notions of direct and indirect effects, that formalize more traditional and informal notions of mediation analysis emanating primarily from the social sciences. The pure or natural direct effect of Robins-Greenland-Pearl quantifies the causal effect of an exposure that is not mediated by a variable on the causal pathway to the outcome, and combines with the natural indirect effect to produce the total causal effect of the exposure. Sufficient conditions for identification of natural direct effects were previously given, that assume certain independencies about potential outcomes, and a rich literature on estimation …

Outlet Glacier Response To Forcing Over Hourly To Interannual Timescales, Jakobshavn Isbræ, Greenland, David Podrasky, Martin Truffer, Mark Fahnestock, Jason M. Amundson, Ryan Cassoto, Ian Joughin

Faculty, Staff, and Students

The loss of the floating ice tongue on Jakobshavn Isbræ, Greenland, in the early 2000s has been concurrent with a pattern of thinning, retreat and acceleration leading to enhanced contribution to global sea level. These changes on decadal timescales have been well documented. Here we identify how the glacier responds to forcings on shorter timescales, such as from variations in surface melt, the drainage of supraglacial lakes and seasonal fluctuations in terminus position. Ice motion and surface melt were monitored intermittently from 2006 to 2008. Dual-frequency GPS were deployed 20–50 km upstream of the terminus along the glacier center line. …

Risk Factor Detection As A Metric Of Starhs Performance For Hiv Incidence Surveillance Among Female Sex Workers In Kigali, Rwanda, Sarah L. Braunstein, Janneke H. Van De Wijgert, Joseph Vyankandondera, Evelyn Kestelyn, Justin Ntirushwa, Denis Nash Sep 2012

Risk Factor Detection As A Metric Of Starhs Performance For Hiv Incidence Surveillance Among Female Sex Workers In Kigali, Rwanda, Sarah L. Braunstein, Janneke H. Van De Wijgert, Joseph Vyankandondera, Evelyn Kestelyn, Justin Ntirushwa, Denis Nash

Publications and Research

Background:
The epidemiologic utility of STARHS hinges not only on producing accurate estimates of HIV incidence, but also on identifying risk factors for recent HIV infection.

Methods:
As part of an HIV seroincidence study, 800 Rwandan female sex workers (FSW) were HIV tested, with those testing positive further tested by BED-CEIA (BED) and AxSYM Avidity Index (Ax-AI) assays. A sample of HIV-negative (N=397) FSW were followed prospectively for HIV seroconversion. We compared estimates of risk factors for: 1) prevalent HIV infection; 2) recently acquired HIV infection (RI) based on three different STARHS classifications (BED alone, Ax-AI alone, BED/Ax-AI combined); and …
