The Interrelationships Among Acculturation, Social Support, And Postpartum Depression Among Marriage Immigrant Women In Taiwan: A Cohort Study, Hung-Hui Chen, Li-Yin Chien
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Adaptation to a new culture is associated with mental well-being among immigrants. Previous research consistently supports the relationship between social support and postpartum depression. However, the causal and structural relationships among acculturation, social support and postpartum depression have not been established. The study objectives were to examine (1) depressive symptomatology at 1 and 6 months postpartum; (2) structural relationships among social support, acculturation, and postpartum depressive symptomatology among immigrant mothers in Taiwan.
Methods: This cohort study recruited 203 new immigrant mothers from China and Vietnam living in Taipei. Data were collected at 1 and 6 months postpartum. Postpartum depression …

Patterns Of Communicating With High Fidelity Patient Simulators, Judy K. Anderson, Kimberly Nelson
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore patterns of communicating with high fidelity (HF) patient simulators. Therapeutic communication is an essential skill for nurses working in any setting. Opportunities to develop this skill are essential to improve comfort and refine competence in communication techniques. High fidelity patient simulators are increasingly being utilized as a teaching-learning strategy. Their effectiveness for developing expertise in critical thinking/problem-solving, clinical skills, and teamwork is documented in the literature. The literature also provides evidence of professional communication skill-building, both intra- and interdisciplinary. Less prevalent in the literature is research on the use of HF …

Valid Items For Screening Dysphagia Risk In Stroke Patients: A Systematic Review, Pamela Willson
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Early detection of dysphagia in acute stroke is critical as it allows for immediate intervention, thereby reducing mortality, morbidity, length of hospitalization, and healthcare costs. These findings have led to the recommendation to screen swallowing ability in all acute stroke patients, regardless of stroke severity. A systematic review of the literature was undertaken to determine the evidence-based validity of dysphagia screening items using instrumental evaluation as the reference standard. Methods: Four databases from 1985 through March, 2011 were searched using the terms cerebrovascular disease, stroke deglutition disorders, and dysphagia. Eligibility criteria were: homogeneous stroke population, comparison to instrumental examination, …

We coordinated biogeographical comparisons of the impacts of an exotic invasive tree in its native and non-native ranges with a congeneric comparison in the non-native range. Prosopis juliflora is taxonomically complicated and with P. pallida forms the P. juliflora complex. Thus we sampled P. juliflora in its native Venezuela, and also located two field sites in Peru, the native range of Prosopis pallida. Canopies of Prosopis juliflora, a native of the New World but an invader in many other regions, had facilitative effects on the diversity of other species in its native Venezuela, and P. pallida had both negative and …

Active Teaching, Active Learning: Are Today's Students Engaged In Learning?, Indra Hershorin
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Todays students are different from the past and nursing faculty find themselves struggling to convey enormous amounts of information to students whose horizon of learning has changed. Prensky (2001) claims that students' today are "native speakers" of the digital language. This generation of learners is growing-up in a digital world surrounded by computers, video games, the Internet, smart phones, MP3 players, computer tablets, and e-book readers. According to Jackson and Crawford (2008) to-days learners are cognitively impacted by digital experiences requiring educators to revisit and ultimately expand the horizon of delivery methods. A review of the state of the science …

Pituitary Tumors: Patient Perceptions Of Cognitive Deficits, Christine G. Yedinak
Pituitary Tumors: Patient Perceptions Of Cognitive Deficits, Christine G. Yedinak
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: The prevalence of pituitary tumors (PT) has been estimated from 15 % of all brain tumors. Both physiologic and psychologic functions can be disturbed, affecting the individual's life functions and quality(Qol). PT are classified by size and hormonal productivity: Macroadenomas (MA) > 1cm and microadenomas (mA) < 1cm tumors; those producing excess hormonal secretions as functional adenomas (FA) and those with normal hormonal function as non-functional adenomas (NFA). Hormonal deficiencies can occur in association with all PTs. Patient complaints of cognitive dysfunction and QoL changes have been validated to occur in patients with hormonally active tumors, but not for patients with microadenomas and non-functional tumors.
Purpose: To determine if cognitive deficits are perceived by patients with NFmA when compared to patients with NFMA.
Methods: Cognitive function was evaluated using a modified, disease specific version of the FACT-Cog questionnaire, limited to perception of cognitive capacity. Perceived ability to learn and concentrate, distractibility, mental agility, factual and short term memory and …
