Comparing Newly Built Wetlands In The Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana And Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, California, Lindsay L. Dunaj
Comparing Newly Built Wetlands In The Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana And Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, California, Lindsay L. Dunaj
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This research investigated patterns in elevation change in newly built wetlands in the Atchafalaya delta, and newly restored wetlands in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River delta. RSETs were used to measure small changes in elevation, and soil cores were processed to examine mineral and organic contributions.
Elevation change was highly variable, responding to influences from water level, river discharge, storms and vegetation. Mineral matter consistently added more to the marsh soil through volumetric and gravimetric contributions. Organic contributions were not significantly different across sites, suggesting the type of emergent vegetation at a site may not be the most important factor.

Computational Scheme Guided Design Of A Hybrid Mild Gasifier, You Lu
Computational Scheme Guided Design Of A Hybrid Mild Gasifier, You Lu
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A mild gasification method has been developed to provide an innovative clean coal technology. The objectives of this study are to (a) incorporate a fixed rate devolatilization model into the existing 2D multiphase reaction model, (b) expand the 2D model to 3D and (c) utilize the improved model to investigate the mild-gasification process and guide modification of the mild-gasifier design. The Eulerain-Eulerian method is employed to calculate both the primary phase (air) and secondary phase (coal particles). The improved 3D simulation model, incorporated with a devolatilization model, has been successfully developed and employed to determine the appropriate draft tube dimensions, …

Rna Compass: Rna Comprehensive Multi-Processor Analysis System For Sequencing, Guorong Xu
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The main theme of this dissertation is to develop a distributed computational pipeline for processing next-generation RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) data. RNA-seq experiments generate hundreds of millions of short reads for each DNA/RNA sample. There are many existing bioinformatics tools developed for the analysis and visualization of this data, but very large studies present computational and organizational challenges that are difficult to overcome manually. We designed a comprehensive pipeline for the analysis of RNA sequencing which leverages many existing tools and parallel computing technology to facilitate the analysis of extremely large studies. RNA CoMPASS provides a web-based graphical user interface and …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Sugar Derivatives As Functional Gelators, Michael J. St Martin
Synthesis And Characterization Of Sugar Derivatives As Functional Gelators, Michael J. St Martin
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Systems formed by the supramolecular assemblages of organic molecules known as organogelators and hydrogelators are currently, and only recently, a subject of great attention and promise. In this context, low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) are of particular interest because they provide a bottom-up approach to the formation of supramolecular architectures through self-assembly. Gelator molecules do so via the initial formation of a one-dimensional array of individual molecules bound non-covalently through forces such as: hydrogen bonds, electrostatic forces, Van der Waals interactions, and other weak forces such as π-π interactions. These interactions then lead to secondary structure formation through a similar …
Transforming Sustainability Thru Adaptive Co-Management: A Critique Of Louisiana’S Coastal Master Plan, Melanie G. Sand
Transforming Sustainability Thru Adaptive Co-Management: A Critique Of Louisiana’S Coastal Master Plan, Melanie G. Sand
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
To achieve true sustainability, planners must balance the interests of environmental protection, economic development, and social equity. In a critically changing, complex ecosystem such as Louisiana’s coast, challenges to achieve the perfect equilibrium are further compounded. Following the logic of emerging adaptive co-management literature, the planning framework for Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan could be transformed into a more collaborative, democratic process. Adaptive co-management is a regime which provides power to local citizens, often in possession of invaluable traditional ecological knowledge. In general, it focuses on constant learning and collaboration. Through power-sharing and participatory action, we embrace science, but step back …
Come As You Are, As I Want You To Be: Grunge/Riot Grrrl Pedagogy And Identity Construction In The Second Year Writing Program, Rory J. Callais
Come As You Are, As I Want You To Be: Grunge/Riot Grrrl Pedagogy And Identity Construction In The Second Year Writing Program, Rory J. Callais
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A look at how artists in the grunge and Riot Grrrl movements constructed public identities that typically appealed to the economic, cultural, and social conditions of the early 1990s. These public personas -- perceived as “honest” -- were defined by negotiation with mainstream culture, the notion of the “confessional,” and gender construction. By examining how these identities were constructed, composition students can see how cultural influences mediate their own identity construction. A “grunge/Riot Grrrl” pedagogy is proposed that encourages students to look at how identities are constructed across a multimedia landscape, reflecting the way grunge and Riot Grrrl artists built …

Preparation And Characterization Of A Self-Crimp Side-By-Side Bicomponent Electrospun Material, Yang Han
Preparation And Characterization Of A Self-Crimp Side-By-Side Bicomponent Electrospun Material, Yang Han
Theses and Dissertations
Bicomponent composite fibers have been widely used in the textile industry and are gaining increasing attention on biomedical applications. In this research, polycaprolactone/poly (lactic acid) side-by-side bicomponent fibers were created for the application of a biodegradable scaffold. The side-by-side structure endowed the fiber with self-crimps when it was processed under certain conditions. This material was produced by electrospinning and collected on a high speed rotating mandrel to get highly oriented fibers. A mechanical stretch at the same direction was done followed by a wet heat treatment for polymer retraction. Crimped fibers were demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy. The quantitative porosity …

Web Impact Factor (Wif) And Link Analysis Of Indian Institute Of Technologies (Iits): A Webometric Study, Rabindra K. Maharana, K.C. Panda, J. Sahoo
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper examines and explores the web impact factor through a webometric study of the present 16 Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) of India. Identifies the domain systems of the websites; analyzes the number of web pages and link pages, and calculates the simple web impact factor (WIF), self link web impact factor and external web impact factor of all the IIT. Also reflects that some IIT have higher number of web pages, but correspondingly their link pages are very small in number and websites fall behind in their simple, self link and external link web impact factor.

Childhood Depression And Obesity: Role Of The Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (Hpa) Axis Activity, Joanne Tyler
Kaleidoscope
This study examined relations between child depression and eating behavior and weight problems, including the role ofbaseline cortisol and cortisol reactivity in these relations. Data were drawn from a larger study, and included 50 children between the ages of6 and 12. Children reported on their depressive symptoms, and children and parents reported on child engagement in external eating, under-eating, over-eating, parental pressure to eat, enjoyment of food, and food and satiety responsiveness. For children exhibiting hypercortisolism, depression was associated with decreased over-eating and food responsiveness. Hypercortisolism was especially important for girls and children later in pubertal development. The reduced appetite …
