White-Light Optical Vortex Coronagraph, Prachyathit Kanburapa Jul 2012

White-Light Optical Vortex Coronagraph, Prachyathit Kanburapa

Theses

An optical vortex is characterized by a dark core of destructive interference in a light beam. One of the methods commonly employed to create an optical vortex is by using a computer-generated hologram. A vortex hologram pattern is computed from the interference pattern between a reference plane wave and a vortex wave, resulting in a forked grating pattern. In astronomy, an optical vortex coronagraph is one of the most promising high contrast imaging techniques for the direct imaging of extra-solar planets. Direct imaging of extra-solar planets is a challenging task since the brightness of the parent star is extremely high …

The “Man Walks Outside Time Now”: Verbal Representations Of Photographic Images In The Poems Of Larry Levis, Lauren Miner Jul 2012

The “Man Walks Outside Time Now”: Verbal Representations Of Photographic Images In The Poems Of Larry Levis, Lauren Miner

Theses and Dissertations

The poet Larry Levis often employed ekphrasis as an elegiac device—particularly with his verbal descriptions of photographic images—to explore human suffering and reconcile feelings of loss. Through the ekphrastic mode, Levis could juxtapose otherwise disparate images, manipulating their temporal and spatial relationships, to achieve what he conceived an authentic portrait of the human experience. The poet, through his verbal descriptions of photographic images, does not try to evade the pain or joy of being human; instead, he confronts his grief directly and, in so doing, transcends that suffering to better understand himself and his own human position. This thesis analyzes …

The Effect Of A Navigational Aid On Training Of A Minimally Invasive Surgery Camera Task, Ketan Vidwans Jul 2012

The Effect Of A Navigational Aid On Training Of A Minimally Invasive Surgery Camera Task, Ketan Vidwans

Theses and Dissertations

Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) differs from Open Surgery as surgeons view the surgical site indirectly on a monitor. The view shown is typically from an angled endoscope off to one side of the surgery (i.e., uncollocated with the view of the hands). This makes camera navigation a challenging ability to learn. MIS thus requires longer training periods, more practice and mental effort to achieve proficiency. Current training setups and Operating Room (OR) environments lack appropriate real-time visual cues for navigation and other perception related information that could help with learning and performance in the OR. The purpose of this research …

The Formation Of Rational And Irrational Behaviors In Risky Investment Decision Making: Laboratory Experiment Of Coping Theory Implication In Investors’ Adaptation Model, Wendy Wendy, Marwan Asri, Jogiyanto Hartono

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

This study analyzes the stock investor's rational and irrational behavior formation through Investor's Adaptation model. Hypotheses testings were conducted by manipulating four market conditions using between-subject experimental design. The results supported the hypotheses proposed in this study. When given treatment one (opportunity-high control), investors tended to adapt the profit maximizing strategy (rational). Meanwhile, when given treatment two (opportunity-low control), three (threat-high control) and four (threat-low control), they tended to adapt the profit satisfying strategy (rational-emotional), bad news handling strategy (emotional-rational), and self-preserving strategy (irrational) respectively. The application of rational strategies are intended to obtain personal benefits and profit, while adapting …

A Study Of Financial Performance And Stock Return In Ipo Underpricing Phenomenon On The Indonesia Stock Exchange (Idx), Agus Irfani

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

It is widely believed that financial performance of listed companies on stock exchange might potentially affect long-term stock return. However, the impact of financial performance on underpric-ing is still in debate. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of financial performance on underpricing at the same period and the effect of both financial performance and underpricing on the long-term stock return on the Indonesia stock exchange (IDX). By employing judgemental sampling method, the sample of this reseach includes 43 underpriced stocks taken from the population of 51 initially public offered stocks on the IDX during 2008-2010. This …

Does Moving Average Technical Trading Rule Provide Value For Intraday Stock Trading?: Evidence From The Indonesia Stock Exchange, Ario Harsanto, Irwan Adi Ekaputra Jul 2012

Does Moving Average Technical Trading Rule Provide Value For Intraday Stock Trading?: Evidence From The Indonesia Stock Exchange, Ario Harsanto, Irwan Adi Ekaputra

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

This paper analyzes the value of employing simple moving average (SMA) and moving average (MA) technical trading rules for intraday stock trading in the Indonesia Stock Exchange. We test independently SMA[5], SMA[10], SMA[15], MA[5,50], MA[5,150], and MA[5,200] trading rules. We find all three SMAs and MA[5,200] tend to deliver returns greater than the unconditional basic return (UBR), while MA[5,50] and MA[5,150] generate returns less than UBR. We conclude that SMAs are more valuable than MAs as intraday technical trading rules.

Synthesis And Characterization Of Amorphous Carbon Nanotubes/Copper Oxide Hybrid Materials / Syazwan Hanani Meriam Suhaimy, Meriam Suhaimy Syazwan Hanani

Student Works (2010-2019)

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are designated as one of the most attractive material from researchers due to their unique properties and, wider range of applications. However, the synthesizing process of crystalline CNT is still a great issue because of their synthesizing process involving complicated process such as need higher operating temperature, catalyst support and expensive production cost. On the other hand, the synthesizing process of amorphous, carbon nanotubes (α-CNTs) offer a simple process. This will facilitate the producing of CNTs and open new doors to many potential applications. Therefore, we reported in this work a way of preparing α-CNT and hybridizing it …

A lot of interest in the baby-boomer generation, those who were born after World War II, has emerged since their retirement has been accelerated. The retirement of baby-boomers has caused many health, public welfare, social policy and family relationship problems. However, their increased purchasing power has made them more attractive consumers than any other generation, and they have become a fascinating niche market in the depressed economy. This research selected middle-class women of the baby-boomer generation who have had powerful effects on society and have emerged as an attractive niche market, and attempted to understand their lives intensively. Based on …

The Effect Of Metacognitive Difficulty On Consumer Judgments, Se Bum Park Jul 2012

The Effect Of Metacognitive Difficulty On Consumer Judgments, Se Bum Park

Asia Marketing Journal

Individuals often make their judgments on the basis of the ease or difficulty with which information comes to mind (for reviews, see Greifeneder, Bless, and Pham 2010; Schwarz 1998, 2004). Recent research, however, has documented that variables known to determine the degree of cognitive resources invested in information processing such as personal relevance (Grayson and Schwarz 1999; Rothman and Schwarz 1998), accuracy motivation (Aarts and Dijksterhuis 1999), and processing capacity (Menon and Raghubir 2003) can affect the extent to which individuals draw on metacognitive difficulty in making their judgments. The primary aim of this research is thus to investigate whether …

소비자의 부정적 브랜드 루머의 수용과 확산, Won Jun Lee, Han Suk Lee Jul 2012

소비자의 부정적 브랜드 루머의 수용과 확산, Won Jun Lee, Han Suk Lee

Asia Marketing Journal

Brand has received much attention from considerable marketing research. When consumers consume product or services, they are exposed to a lot of brand related stimuli. These contain brand personality, brand experience, brand identity, brand communications and so on. A special kind of new crisis occasionally confronting companies` brand management today is the brand related rumor. An important influence on consumers` purchase decision making is the word-of-mouth spread by other consumers and most decisions are influenced by other`s recommendations. In light of this influence, firms have reasonable reason to study and understand consumer-to-consumer communication such as brand rumor. The importance of …

인터넷쇼핑 상황에서 보상프로그램이 브랜드충성도에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구, Ji Hern Kim, Hyun Mo Kang, M. Munkhbazar

Asia Marketing Journal

Previous studies of reward programs have generally focused on designing the best programs for consumers and suggested that consumers` perception of the value of reward programs can vary according to the type of reward program (e.g., hedonic vs. utilitarian and direct vs. indirect) and its timing (e.g., immediate vs. delayed). These studies have typically assumed that consumers` preference for reward programs has a positive effect on brand loyalty. However, Dowling and Uncles (1997) pointed out that this preference does not necessarily foster brand loyalty. In this regard, the present study verifies this assumption by examining the effects of consumers` perception …

Assessing The Efficiency Of Jakarta Islamic Index-Linked Investing, Anwar Salahuddin, Anton Hermansyah

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

The passive investing is getting easier with the fund that mimics indexes or market portfolio. The sharia market instruments is the answer to the need of Muslim investors. In the future, there are possibilities for more index-linked funds, exchange traded funds, and index-based derivatives in Indonesia including their sharia counterpart. We analyze the performance of Jakarta Islamic Index in three aspects, profitability, stability, and efficiency, compared with ordinary indexes, the BISNIS-27 Index and the LQ45 Index. The profitability is analyzed using Fama and French Three Factors model. The stability aspect is analyzed using Sharpe Return Based Style Analysis and Style …

Asian Diaspora And East-West Modernity, Sheng-Me Ma Jul 2012

Asian Diaspora And East-West Modernity, Sheng-Me Ma

Comparative Cultural Studies

Drawing from Anglo-American, Asian American, and Asian literature as well as J-horror and manga, Chinese cinema and Internet, and the Korean Wave, Sheng-mei Ma's Asian Diaspora and East-West Modernity probes into the conjoinedness of West and East, of modernity's illusion and nothing's infinitude. Suspended on the stylistic tightrope between research and poetry, critical analysis and intuition, Asian Diaspora restores affect and heart to the experience of diaspora in between East and West, at-homeness and exilic attrition. Diaspora, by definition, stems as much from socioeconomic and collective displacement as it points to emotional reaction. This book thus challenges the fossilized conceptualizations …

The Spatial Signature Of Biotic Interactions Of A Clonal And A Non-Clonal Palmetto In A Subtropical Plant Community, Mizuki Takahashi, Toshiro Kubota, Liana M. Horner, Nathan A. Keller, Warren G. Abrahamson Ii Jul 2012

The Spatial Signature Of Biotic Interactions Of A Clonal And A Non-Clonal Palmetto In A Subtropical Plant Community, Mizuki Takahashi, Toshiro Kubota, Liana M. Horner, Nathan A. Keller, Warren G. Abrahamson Ii

Faculty Journal Articles

Spatial analyses of plant-distribution patterns can provide inferences about intra- and interspecific biotic interactions. Yet, such analyses are rare for clonal plants because effective tools (i.e., molecular markers) needed to map naturally occurring clonal individuals have only become available recently. Clonal plants are unique in that a single genotype has a potential to spatially place new individuals (i.e., ramets) in response to intra- and interspecific biotic interactions. Laboratory and greenhouse studies suggest that some clonal plants can avoid intra-genet, inter-genet, and inter-specific competition via rootplacement patterns. An intriguing and yet to be explored question is whether a spatial signature of …

Path Integration: Effect Of Curved Path Complexity And Sensory System On Blindfolded Walking, Panagiotis Koutakis, Mukul Mukherjee, Srikant Vallabhajosula, David J. Blanke, Nikolaos Stergiou Jul 2012

Path Integration: Effect Of Curved Path Complexity And Sensory System On Blindfolded Walking, Panagiotis Koutakis, Mukul Mukherjee, Srikant Vallabhajosula, David J. Blanke, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

Path integration refers to the ability to integrate continuous information of the direction and distance traveled by the system relative to the origin. Previous studies have investigated path integration through blindfolded walking along simple paths such as straight line and triangles. However, limited knowledge exists regarding the role of path complexity in path integration. Moreover, little is known about how information from different sensory input systems (like vision and proprioception) contributes to accurate path integration. The purpose of the current study was to investigate how sensory information and curved path complexity affect path integration. Forty blindfolded participants had to accurately …
