Design And Testing Of A Biological Microelectromechanical System For The Injection Of Thousands Of Cells Simultaneously, Gregory Herlin Teichert Jul 2012

Design And Testing Of A Biological Microelectromechanical System For The Injection Of Thousands Of Cells Simultaneously, Gregory Herlin Teichert

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to inject DNA and other foreign particles into cells, both germ cells (e.g. to produce transgenic animals) and somatic cells (e.g. for gene therapy), is a powerful tool in genetic research. Nanoinjection is a method of DNA delivery that combines mechanical and electrical methods. It has proven to have higher cell viability than traditional microinjection, resulting in higher integration per injected embryo. The nanoinjection process can be performed on thousands of cells simultaneously using an array of microneedles that is inserted into a monolayer of cells. This thesis describes the needle array design requirements and the fabrication process …

Shenshi 紳士 Atau Gentry Cina: Sekilas Sejarah Dan Profil Kaum Aristokrat Cina Pada Zaman Kekaisaran, Adrianus L.G Waworuntu

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

In order to comprehend the many aspects of social and cultural historiography of traditional China, it is imperative to recognize who are the main actors. In traditional Chinese society, there is a significant category known as the Chinese gentry, or the shenshi 紳士 in Mandarin. They were known as the Chinese scholar-official class who administered the traditional Chinese dynastic government system since more than two-thousand years ago until the abolishment of the system in 1911. The Chinese gentry emerged from the intellectuals who became officials by going through a special, open-recruited, educational system; a system that enabled every person from …

Effects Of Leaf Litter Diversity On Nutrients And Mosquito Communities In Neotropical Artificial Tree Holes, Rachel Komosinski Jul 2012

Effects Of Leaf Litter Diversity On Nutrients And Mosquito Communities In Neotropical Artificial Tree Holes, Rachel Komosinski

Theses and Dissertations

Inputs from terrestrial habitats to aquatic habitats are important for structuring aquatic communities. Terrestrial producer diversity in the tropics may decline due to anthropogenic causes. I investigated how tree diversity affects aquatic communities. We used leaves from three timber-producing species (Dalbergia retusa, Pachira quinata, and Tectona grandis) to test the effects of leaf litter species composition and richness on invertebrate aquatic communities in Gamboa, Panama. We quantified macroinvertbrate species richness and abundances, leaf litter mass loss, and dissolved carbon to nitrogen ratios (C:N) after 4 weeks. We found that litter types differed in breakdown and C:N. Tectona grandis had lower …

Between the late Oligocene and the early Miocene, climatic changes have shattered the faunal and floral communities and drove the apparition of new ecological niches. Grassland biomes began to supplant forestlands, thus favouring a large-scale ecosystem turnover. The independent adaptive radiations of several mammal lineages through the evolution of key innovations are classic examples of these changes. However, little is known concerning the evolutionary history of other herbivorous groups in relation with this modified environment. It is especially the case in phytophagous insect communities, which have been rarely studied in this context despite their ecological importance. Here, we investigate the …

Early Warning Indicators Study Of Bank Runs In Indonesia: Markov-Switching Approach, Iskandar Simorangkir Jul 2012

Early Warning Indicators Study Of Bank Runs In Indonesia: Markov-Switching Approach, Iskandar Simorangkir

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

A run on a particular bank can lead to a banking crisis if it spreads to other banks (contagious effect). In the case of Indonesia, bank runs have also reoccurred time and again. In 1992, bank runs affected several national banks, subsequently precipitating the liquidation of one bank. Then in 1997/1998, bank runs developed into the worst banking crisis ever witnessed in the banking history of Indonesia. Considering the extent of losses attributable to bank runs and the banking crisis, extensive studies on the early warning indicators of bank runs are urgently required to prevent future bank runs and banking …

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

During the increasing uncertainty of the global economy, Indonesia is still able to grow by 6.4% (yoy). The main source of the economic growth is domestic demands, which are the increasing household consumptions and investments. The high household consumption is in accordance with the consumers’ confidence and stable consumers’ purchasing power, as indicated from the high sales of retailer. The high consumption and conducive business climate lead to the increase of investment. This condition is supported by business agents’ optimism. Meanwhile, the export growth slowed rapidly as the impact of the slowing down global economy that leads to decreasing demand …

Confucianism aims to educate and emphasize for people to serve the state and society. To understand Confucianism is necessary to understand the book of Daxue 大学 (Great Teaching), which contains teachings on ethics, the ethics of family, society and state. Confucianism is not an ideology at the state level or national level but rather to a personal level. Confucianism, which emphasizes self-processing in a personal level is what can survive for so long and respected, and spread to all levels and persists in the modern world.

Exploring The Impact Of First-Generation Status And Family Cohesion On The Career Thoughts Of College Students, Roneferiti Maishia Fowler Jul 2012

Exploring The Impact Of First-Generation Status And Family Cohesion On The Career Thoughts Of College Students, Roneferiti Maishia Fowler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The impact of first-generation status and family cohesion on the career thoughts of college students was investigated. While prior research had examined the differences between first-generation and non-first-generation college students, few studies have focused on the career-decision making of first-generation college students. No research to date had specifically explored the relationship between first-generation status, family cohesion, and negative career thoughts of college students. While making a career decision is often a difficult task, it was expected that given their parents' lack of experience with college, first-generation college students would likely experience more barriers in career thinking than other students. In …

Profiles Of Children's Classroom Relationships And Their Association To Peer Social Competence, Tara K. Cossel Jul 2012

Profiles Of Children's Classroom Relationships And Their Association To Peer Social Competence, Tara K. Cossel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The nature of children’s peer relationships, usually investigated in terms of mutual friends and/or mutual antipathies, is critical to their social functioning and adjustment. Recently, Olsen, Parra, Cohen, Schoffstall, and Egli (2012) offered a comprehensive framework for studying children’s peer relationships as all possible dyads within classrooms, using both friendship and antipathy nominations. This present research extended this work by systematically considering a more complete profile of all the classroom relationships of each third-sixth grade child and comparing these profiles to social functioning, including: children’s self-ratings of social competence and peer optimism, and peer nominations ofsociability, showing respect, overt and …

Trophy Hunting And Trophy Size In Ugalla Game Reserve, Western Tanzania, P Wilfred Jul 2012

Trophy Hunting And Trophy Size In Ugalla Game Reserve, Western Tanzania, P Wilfred

Tanzania Journal of Science

The present paper explores trends and variations in trophy size among wildlife species hunted in the Ugalla Game Reserve (UGR) of western Tanzania, in relation to hunting success (animals shot species-1 quota-1). Data on trophy hunting from 2006 – 2010 were obtained from the UGR office in Tabora Region. Forty-seven species were targeted by trophy hunters. Hunting success differed significantly across the species (Generalised Linear Model [GLM] with a binomial error structure: deviance chi-square [X2] = 9.64, d.f. = 44, p<0.001). Twenty-eight species had trophy size measurements, but only 6 species had measurements taken consistently throughout the data period. Although most of the shot animals were above their minimum trophy size limits (official trophy limits below which animals could not be removed) there was significant variation among species (GLM with normal errors: F5,201 = 509.12, p<0.001). Time (years) had no significant effect on trophy size, but the trend over time in trophy size differed significantly among species (F5,194 = 5.42, p<0.001). Of the trophy species, greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) had the largest mean trophy size, whereas warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) had  the lowest trophy size and showed a considerable decline. The majority of the animals had trophy sizes hovering just above their minimum limits. This should be monitored rigorously to avoid removing large numbers of actively breeding animals.

Performance Of Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetland For Domestic Wastewater Treatment, Jp Mairi, Tj Lyimo, Kn Njau

Tanzania Journal of Science

Constructed wetlands (CW) have recently emerged as efficient technology for secondary treatment of wastewater in developing countries because of its low cost, ease operation, maintenance and generally good performance. At present there are a number of small scale units of CW for wastewater treatment in Tanzania but information on their performance is scarce. This study investigated the removal efficiency of fecal bacteria indicators, inorganic nutrients and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) from wastewater by a CW at the University of Dar es Salaam. The CW received wastewater from a primary facultative pond and was a monoculture system planted with Phragmites mauritianus …

Wet Oxidation Of Maleic Acid By A Pumice Supported Copper (Ii) Shiff Base Catalyst, Jeg Mdoe, Raj Minja, L Daniel

Tanzania Journal of Science

Pumice supported Cu (II) Schiff base catalysts were prepared by surface chemical modification followed by complexation with Cu (II) acetate. The resulting materials were characterised by Diffuse Reflectance Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) to confirm the modification. The materials were tested in a wet oxidation of maleic acid using air or hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant. Results indicate that up to 80% degradation of maleic acid could  be achieved in the presence of the catalyst using hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant. The degradation was found to depend on the type of oxidant, temperature and whether the parent pumice was acid pre-treated …

A Technique For Identification Of Intrinsic Resistance Of Maize Varieties To Sitophilus Zeamais (Motsch.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Infestations, Cp Rugumamu

Tanzania Journal of Science

A new technique used to identify resistant maize varieties to the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch.) infestations is presented. It applies Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate- Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SDS - PAGE) of the insect fat body to determine the levels of fat body vitellogenin (FVg) in the vitellogenic S. zeamais females which were reared on different maize varieties. Results on levels of FVg varied and ranged from 83.33% to 43.33% in insects raised in different varieties ANOVA of FVg, maize weight loss and F1 numbers showed significant differences among the varieties at P<0.05. Maize weight loss and F1 numbers were positively correlated with FVg, r = 0.74 and 0.98, P< 0.05. The revealed amounts of FVg in S. zeamais obtained from the varieties indicated varying intrinsic resistance of the varieties to the insect pest. The varieties exhibited resistance in descending order: ZM 621>H 622> H 511> Situka 1> Situka M1 …
