The Anatomy Of Expression: Explorations On The Intersection Of Acting And The Alexander Technique, Kelley Schoger Jul 2012

The Anatomy Of Expression: Explorations On The Intersection Of Acting And The Alexander Technique, Kelley Schoger

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this paper is to illuminate how the principles of the Alexander Technique and the role of bodily systems can serve as a foundational support for actor training. Inclusion of the Alexander Technique in the acting curriculum proves to be an effective tool for bridging the gap between kinesthetic learning and its application to beginning acting training. Starting with the nervous system, the operating principles of the Alexander Technique are discussed through research and personal insights. Next, in light of how self-discovery plays a key role in the first year of actor training, the idea of release in …

Self-Organizing Fluid Flow Patterns In Crystalline Rock: Theoretical Approach To The Hydrothermal Systems In The Middle Fork Of The Boise River, Scott A. Himes Jul 2012

Self-Organizing Fluid Flow Patterns In Crystalline Rock: Theoretical Approach To The Hydrothermal Systems In The Middle Fork Of The Boise River, Scott A. Himes

Theses and Dissertations

The thermal springs along the Middle Fork of the Boise River (MFBR) within the Atlanta lobe of the Idaho batholith discharge in discrete locations that appear to be part of self-organizing flow systems. Infiltrating water flows through Basin and Range fractures to depth where it is heated and ultimately discharged at the intersection of trans-Challis oriented faults along the MFBR. Isotopic compositions of the thermal waters have a linear trend with elevation suggesting that the recharge locations are near each thermal spring and the hydrothermal system is not one large interconnected system, but rather multiple individual hydrothermal systems. Water chemically …

Algan/Gan Dual Channel Hfets And Realization Of Gan Devices On Different Substrates, Mo Wu Jul 2012

Algan/Gan Dual Channel Hfets And Realization Of Gan Devices On Different Substrates, Mo Wu

Theses and Dissertations

GaN-based HFETs demonstrate ubiquitous high power and high frequency performance and attract tremendous research efforts. Even though significant advances have been achieved, there still exist some critical issues needed to be investigated and solved. In particular, high defect densities due to inhomogeneous growth and operation under high power conditions bring many unique problems which are not so critical in the conventional Si and GaAs materials systems. In order to reduce the defect density and heat dissipation of GaN-based HFETs, research work on the realization of GaN-based HFETs on bulk GaN substrate has been carried out and the key problems have …

Signal Transduction Effects Induced By Erythropoietin In A Hnscc Model System, Shreya Desai Jul 2012

Signal Transduction Effects Induced By Erythropoietin In A Hnscc Model System, Shreya Desai

Theses and Dissertations

Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC) is an epithelial skin cancer of the upper aerodigestive tract, and is the sixth most common malignancy in the U.S. HNSCC patients undergoing chemotherapy commonly develop anemia, a condition in which the body lacks mature red blood cells (RBCs). Erythropoietin (EPO) is a systemically circulating hormone in the body that regulates the production of RBCs and is applied to treat anemia. Recently, several studies implicated shortened life expectancy of cancer patients by EPO administration. It may be due to an unexpected activation of survival and proliferation pathways of cancer cells by EPO because …

Microstructure Of Systems With Competition, Saurish Chakrabarty Jul 2012

Microstructure Of Systems With Competition, Saurish Chakrabarty

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The micro-structure of systems with competition often exhibits many universal features. In this thesis, we study certain aspects of these structural features as well as the microscopic interactions using disparate exact and approximate techniques. This thesis can be broadly divided into two parts. In the first part, we use statistical mechanics arguments to make general statements about length and timescales in systems with two-point interactions. We demonstrate that at high temperatures, the correlation function of general O(n) systems exhibits a universal form. This form enables the extraction of microscopic interaction potentials from the high temperature correlation functions. In systems with …

Detecting The Immune System Response Of A 500 Year-Old Inca Mummy, Angelique Corthals, Antonius Koller, Dwight W. Martin, Robert Rieger, Emily I. Chen, Mario Bernaski, Gabriella Recagno, Liliana M. Dávalos

Publications and Research

Disease detection in historical samples currently relies on DNA extraction and amplification, or immunoassays. These techniques only establish pathogen presence rather than active disease. We report the first use of shotgun proteomics to detect the protein expression profile of buccal swabs and cloth samples from two 500-year-old Andean mummies. The profile of one of the mummies is consistent with immune system response to severe pulmonary bacterial infection at the time of death. Presence of a probably pathogenic Mycobacterium sp. in one buccal swab was confirmed by DNA amplification, sequencing, and phylogenetic analyses. Our study provides positive evidence of active pathogenic …

A Master-Slave Soc Structure For Hmm Based Speech Recognition, Hui Geng, Yiyu Shi, Ming Dong, Runsheng Liu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we propose a master-slave SoC structure composed of an ARM7-TDMI and a co-processor for Mahala Nobis distance calculation. the SoC was implemented on an Actel ProASIC series M7A3P1000 FPGA. Furthermore, we implement a HMM based speech recognition system based on this SoC. Compared with the conventional ASIC co-processor and slave SoC structure, the new master-slave structure reduces the number of SRAM access and improves the bus efficiency. Experiment results show that with 1.40s Chinese speech feixi and 24MHz clock, the processing time of the M-S SoC system is 1.85s, a 64.12% reduction compared with the software implement …

Out Of The Scriptorium: An Assessment Of The Editing Profession's Knowledge Base And An Introduction To The History Of Its Earliest Practitioners, Carolyn Isbell Magrans

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The work of editing has been practiced for nearly as long as there have been texts, but despite its emergence as a profession within the field of technical communication, editing regularly struggles to fully define its contributions to their success. Although new academic courses and texts in editing and publishing, recently developed certifications in specialized subject areas, and a growing number of professional societies and associations suggest a fully formed professional identity for editors, issues of conflict, contribution, valuation, and professional self-esteem remain consistent topics of discussion in the literature. Old stereotypes of curmudgeonly grammarians and outdated descriptions alluding to …

World Energy Balance Outlook And Opec Production Capacity: Implications For Global Oil Security, Ali Mirchi, Saeed Hadian, Kaveh Madani, Omid M. Rouhani, Azadeh M. Rouhani

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The imbalance between energy resource availability, demand, and production capacity, coupled with inherent economic and environmental uncertainties make strategic energy resources planning, management, and decision-making a challenging process. In this paper, a descriptive approach has been taken to synthesize the world’s energy portfolio and the global energy balance outlook in order to provide insights into the role of Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in maintaining “stability” and “balance” of the world’s energy market. This synthesis illustrates that in the absence of stringent policies, i.e., if historical trends of the global energy production and consumption hold into the future, it …

Classification for medical diagnosis is an important problem in the field of pattern recognition. We introduce a new method for classification based on repeated analysis of information tailored to small data sets - the Rote Learning Classifier System. using the Wisconsin Breast Cancer study, this method was compared to three other methods of classification: Mahalanobis-Taguchi Systems, Finite State Classifiers, and Neural Networks. It was found that for the given data set, the Rote Learning Classifier System outperformed the other methods of classification. This new algorithm correctly classified over 92% of the data set. © 2012 IEEE.
