United State House Elections Post-Citizens United: The Influence Of Unbridled Spending, Laura Gaffey Jul 2012

United State House Elections Post-Citizens United: The Influence Of Unbridled Spending, Laura Gaffey

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

After the Citizens United decision in 2010 allowed corporations and unions to spend freely in elections, much media attention was given to the influence of unlimited and undisclosed donations during the 2010 midterm elections. This research attempts to determine the impact of increased outside spending by super PACs and other groups post-Citizens United by comparing United States House races in 2006 and 2010. The analysis controls for other factors that influence election outcomes in order to determine the influence of outside spending, confirming that outside money did have a small measurable effect in both elections when spent to support …

The Influence Of Cosmopolitan Values On Environmental Attitudes: An International Comparison, Lauren Contorno Jul 2012

The Influence Of Cosmopolitan Values On Environmental Attitudes: An International Comparison, Lauren Contorno

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

Many recent environmental politics and environmental behavior studies have attempted to explain the variation in individuals’ environmental attitudes by means of their personal values. This piece enters into the recent debate that has developed around the dichotomous ideologies of cosmopolitanism and patriotism and their relationship to environmentalism, arguing that individuals with cosmopolitan values are more likely to exhibit concern for environmental issues than those with patriotic values. Through an analysis of regression models for seven Western industrialized nations, this study confirms a positive correlation between cosmopolitan values and environmentalism. The explanatory power of cosmopolitanism was greater than that of social …

Keep It Clean? How Negative Campaigns Affect Voter Turnout, Hannah Griffin Jul 2012

Keep It Clean? How Negative Campaigns Affect Voter Turnout, Hannah Griffin

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

This study examines the effects of negative political campaigns on voter turnout over the last 10 years. Voter turnout in the United States is extremely low in comparison to other advanced industrialized nations, and the negativity that surrounds our elections may be the key to understanding why. The study is also a response to recent scholarship with conflicting conclusions on how the tone of campaigns affects the electorate. The independent variable in this study is the degree of campaign negativity, as perceived by voters. It is measured by state exit poll responses over the past 10 years, and its effect …

Evidence For A Hierarchy Within Breast Cancer Stem Cells: Relevance To Metastasis And Therapy, Diana J. Azzam Jul 2012

Evidence For A Hierarchy Within Breast Cancer Stem Cells: Relevance To Metastasis And Therapy, Diana J. Azzam

Open Access Dissertations

Accumulating evidence over the past decade has established the existence of a cancer stem cell (CSC) subpopulation within breast cancers that is responsible for tumor initiation, progression and drug resistance. However, few models have characterized phenotypically distinct subsets of cells within CSC populations that may underlie the heterogeneity of tumor responses to standard chemo and radiation therapies. Similarly, despite the widely accepted postulate that CSCs generate metastasis, few studies have demonstrated experimentally the existence of heterogeneity within the CSCs with regard to metastatic potential. The work in this thesis was undertaken to identify whether such discrete subsets exist among CSCs …

Subspace-Based Semantic Concept Detection And Retrieval For Multimedia Information Systems, Chao Chen Jul 2012

Subspace-Based Semantic Concept Detection And Retrieval For Multimedia Information Systems, Chao Chen

Open Access Dissertations

The prevalence of digital recording devices, the cheap cost of data storage as well as the convenience provided by the widely accessible Internet have created the demand to retrieve information according to users' requests from multimedia data sources. However, the multimedia information retrieval task has several challenges that need to be addressed, such as bridging the semantic gap, modeling from imbalanced data sets, and utilizing inter-concept relationships to enhance the retrieval performance of an individual concept. To respond to the challenge of bridging the semantic gap, subspace modeling methods are proposed to address this issue as a classification task. The …

Stain On The Brain - The David Owen Story, Jody Jackson

Open Access Dissertations

David Owen, Australian child abuse survivor‘s life story spanning seventy years, is a testament to “the will to survive.” Taken from his mother and sent to Neerkol, one of the most notorious government backed Catholic-run orphanages out in the desolate bush of Queensland, he was subjected to extreme abuse, emotionally, physically and sexually. Upon leaving Neerkol, this functionally illiterate young man became a professional Rugby League player and union organizer. He unexpectedly reunited with his mother and became a devoted son. Later in life he courageously challenged the powerful Queensland Government and Catholic Church. A fifty-two-page petition authored by Owen …

Punishment And Work Law Compliance: Lessons From Chile, César F. Rosado Marzán Jul 2012

Punishment And Work Law Compliance: Lessons From Chile, César F. Rosado Marzán

All Faculty Scholarship

Workplace law activists and reformers find it increasingly more difficult to obtain redress for violation of workers’ rights. Some of them are calling for stricter enforcement and tougher penalties to bring employers into compliance. However, after seven and half months of participant observation at the Labor Directorate and the labor courts of Chile, institutions that use punishment as their main tools of enforcement, I am skeptical about the likelihood of success of mere punishment for effective workplace law enforcement and compliance. I am skeptical even though Chile is a country recognized as the Latin American “jaguar” for its successful economy …

Etfs Vs. Etns, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

While ETFs are essentially market-traded products that are similar to mutual funds, ETNs are actually more like a variable rate fixed income product that is "guaranteed" by the issuer. This difference adds a significant element of counterparty risk. Further, most ETNs are treated like partnerships, which means that taxes on gains (and losses) are treated differently, with recognition required each year (Statement K-1) rather than simply at sale. See a brief article here, USA Today.

Determinants Of Municipal Waste Diversion In Ontario, Brock Ceci Jul 2012

Determinants Of Municipal Waste Diversion In Ontario, Brock Ceci

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines the impact of socio-economic characteristics on the rate of waste diversion in 196 municipalities across the province of Ontario. It uses 2006 data from Waste Diversion Ontario (WDO) and Statistics Canada to look at a specific list of variables, including the percentage of rented households in the municipality, the percentage of individuals who hold a university degree, the population density and the level of urbanization, and the region in which the municipality is located. The findings reveal that socio-economic characteristics explain only a portion of what determines the rate of waste diversion in Ontario municipalities.

Laboratory Technical Supplement For The Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (Msceit), John D. Mayer

UNH Personality Lab

The Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) User’s Manual (Mayer, Salovey & Caruso, 2002), published by MHS, provides a great deal of information about using the MSCEIT test. Since the publication of the MHS manual, additional issues have arisen within the test-user and research communities associated with the test. This brief technical document addresses two of those concerns.

This laboratory technical supplement covers two topics that arise regarding the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test: how to calculate a split half reliability for the test, and how to develop and score the test using local norms (i.e., national or regional norms, or norms …
