Abstinence Mission At Odds With Evidence: Sticky Shame And Forbidden Pleasures, Lynn Koller Jul 2012

Abstinence Mission At Odds With Evidence: Sticky Shame And Forbidden Pleasures, Lynn Koller

Humanities & Communication - Daytona Beach

Abstinence-only-until-marriage (AOUM) programs made prevalent over the last decade remain widespread in U.S. public schools, despite failure to demonstrate effectiveness at reducing the onset of teenage sexual activity or decreasing unplanned pregnancies or the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (Kirby, 2007; Trenholm, et al., 2007). These programs remain popular in the face of The Personal Responsibility and Education Program (PREP) (2010), which created a funding stream for medically-accurate sexuality education programs that have demonstrated evidence of success at meeting program goals. Long-standing objections about the efficacy and ethics of AOUM programs are valid and compelling; however opponents often fail …

From “Bitch” To “Mentor”: A Doctoral Student’S Story Of Self-Change And Mentoring, Brian T. Gearity, Norma Mertz Jul 2012

From “Bitch” To “Mentor”: A Doctoral Student’S Story Of Self-Change And Mentoring, Brian T. Gearity, Norma Mertz

The Qualitative Report

For several reasons, the process of writing and completing the doctoral dissertation has been identified as the most frequent road block for many promising scholars. The goal of this study is to help improve doctoral student dissertation completion by focusing on the crucial, central concerns of effective student writing, faculty mentoring, and the student-advisor relationship. Using an experimental, evocative autoethnographic approach, the following study shows the struggles and successes of a doctoral student managing himself, the university, “life”, and most importantly, his doctoral dissertation chair. The findings weave together strategies from storytelling (e.g., plot, characters, and scene) with the personal …

Interviewing The Interpretive Researcher: An Impressionist Tale, Rebecca K. Frels, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie Jul 2012

Interviewing The Interpretive Researcher: An Impressionist Tale, Rebecca K. Frels, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie

The Qualitative Report

In this manuscript, we describe the use of debriefing interviews for interviewing the interpretive researcher. Further, we demonstrate the value of using debriefing questions as part of a qualitative research study, specifically, one doctoral student’s dissertation study. We describe the reflexivity process of the student in her study and the debriefing data that were coded via qualitative coding techniques. Thus, we provide an exemplar of the debriefing process and the findings that emerged as a result. We believe that our exemplar of interviewing the interpretive researcher provides evidence of an effective strategy for addressing the crises of representation and legitimation …

Strategic Location And The Economy, Ishrat Husain Dr. Jul 2012

Strategic Location And The Economy, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

We Pakistanis never tire of emphasising our ‘strategic location’. However, the fact is that this strategic location, instead of helping the economic prospects of the country, has devastated it. Any other country in Pakistan’s place would have reaped huge dividends. But we have seen Foreign Direct Investment plunge by 50 percent and the drying up of official and private capital flows. Exports have remained well below target, international buyers are shirking Pakistan and the number of Pakistani students getting admission into western universities is on the decline.

Design, Analysis And Testing Of Haptic Feedback System For Laparoscopic Graspers In In Vivo Surgical Robots, Nikhil Salvi Jul 2012

Design, Analysis And Testing Of Haptic Feedback System For Laparoscopic Graspers In In Vivo Surgical Robots, Nikhil Salvi

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Laparo-Endoscopic Single Site (LESS) Robotics Surgery is an advanced technology in the field of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS). The LESS surgical robots significantly improve the surgeon’s accuracy, dexterity and visualization, and reduce the invasiveness of surgical procedure results in faster recovery time and improved cosmetic results. In a standard robotic endosurgery, the palpation of tissues is performed by laparoscopic graspers located at the end effectors. The master-slave configuration in robotic surgery leads in remote access to the operation site. Therefore, surgeon’s ability to perceive valuable sensory information is severely diminished. Sensory information such as haptics, which is essential for safe …

When Women Matter: The Relationship Between Women's Presence And Policy Representation In Western European States, Diana Z. O'Brien Jul 2012

When Women Matter: The Relationship Between Women's Presence And Policy Representation In Western European States, Diana Z. O'Brien

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In recent years, increasing women's participation in electoral politics has become a priority for a number of activists, politicians, and international governing organizations. This focus can largely be attributed to the belief that doing so provides normative benefits for women through increased policy representation. Despite the prevalence of this assumption, research connecting women's numeric and policy representation generates mixed results. At the same time, this work often fails to adequately theorize the link between the presence of female legislators and attention to women on the political agenda. Inspired by these policy debates, this dissertation asks when women's policy representation emerges …

The Moderating Impact Of Neuroticism On The Relationship Between Moral Characteristics And Prosocial Behaviors., Trisha Marie Nash Jul 2012

The Moderating Impact Of Neuroticism On The Relationship Between Moral Characteristics And Prosocial Behaviors., Trisha Marie Nash

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Prosocial behaviors are considered to be beneficial, not only to the person who receives them, but also to the person acting as the benefactor, and are shown to increase positive outcomes such as vitality, self-esteem and subjective well-being (Weinstein & Ryan, 2010). While various researchers have questioned why people do or do not act prosocially (e.g., Batson, Harris, McCaul, Davis, & Schmidt, 1979; Eisenberg et al., 1999, etc.), the understanding about the factors that lead to or inhibit prosocial behaviors remains lacking. It is known that positive moral characteristics such as empathy (e.g., Batson, 1984, 1991), perspective taking (e.g., Batson, …

Oxidative Status And Life History Trade-Offs In The Cooperatively Breeding Florida Scrub-Jay, Rebecca Suzanne Heiss Jul 2012

Oxidative Status And Life History Trade-Offs In The Cooperatively Breeding Florida Scrub-Jay, Rebecca Suzanne Heiss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Oxidative damage has been linked to several degenerative diseases and, as such, the oxidative status of an organism has been widely used as a proxy for health state. Organisms able to resist attack by reactive oxygen species, or those with high levels of antioxidants, are typically assumed to be in better condition (i.e., better able to withstand oxidative damage to biomolecules). Little work, however, has focused on whether the oxidative status of an organism (particularly oxidative damage in free-living species) influences life history decisions. My research examined the interplay between oxidative status and life history characteristics in a free-living bird, …

Oral And Silent Reading Fluency: An Investigation Utilizing Structural Equation Modeling, Katherine W. Price Jul 2012

Oral And Silent Reading Fluency: An Investigation Utilizing Structural Equation Modeling, Katherine W. Price

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Oral and silent reading fluency are often conflated in the literature such that they are treated as a single construct. The current study examined whether oral and silent reading fluency represent distinct constructs in a sample model of fourth-grade students. In addition to oral and silent reading fluency, lower-level reading skills (e.g., word reading, nonword reading, rapid automatic naming) and vocabulary were included in structural equation models in order to determine their impact on students' reading fluency and reading comprehension. The results suggest that oral and silent reading fluency represent separate constructs; however, only oral reading fluency was found to …

Relations Among Brief Measures Of Mathematics, Reading, And Processing Speed: A Construct Validity Study, Jennifer Leigh Maynard Jul 2012

Relations Among Brief Measures Of Mathematics, Reading, And Processing Speed: A Construct Validity Study, Jennifer Leigh Maynard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Emphasis on regular mathematics skill assessment, intervention, and progress monitoring under the RTImodel has created a need for the development of assessment instruments that are psychometrically sound, reliable, universal, and brief. Important factors to consider when developing or selecting assessments for the school environment include what skills are assessed; mathematics curriculums typically include computation and applications as separate skills taught in sequence. It is also important to consider what additional factors may potentially influence performance on such tests due to the nature of test administration and characteristics of the test items. The current study investigated the construct validity of established, …

After The Burning: Excerpts And Stories, Pamala Rachel Ewing Jul 2012

After The Burning: Excerpts And Stories, Pamala Rachel Ewing

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This collection features short stories and two novel excerpts all dealing with flawed characters struggling to build and maintain meaningful connections with the people around them. Some of these characters fail while others succeed, although this success often takes a different form than the character anticipated. The stories take place in Mississippi and Tennessee and are infused with the troubled relationship with the past that so often marks literature set in the American south. While the individual pieces deal with a wide variety of situations and circumstances, the collection is united by a pervasive theme of loneliness, exploring the danger …

When Language Lies: Truth, Silence, And Codes Of Deception, Tammy C. Cline Jul 2012

When Language Lies: Truth, Silence, And Codes Of Deception, Tammy C. Cline

The Qualitative Report

What does an autoethnography look like? How do you conduct reliable qualitative research when you are both the researcher and the researched? Where do you find truth as an adult when you discover your life as a child was full of secrets? In his book "A Need to Know: The Clandestine History of a CIA Family”, author H. J. Goodall (2006), tells the story of his personal journey investigating his own life growing up with a father who was a counter-intelligence offer in the cold-war era. While this narrative is an engaging and readable account, it is also a work …

Landmark Optimization Using Local Curvature For Point-Based Nonlinear Rodent Brain Image Registration., Yutong Liu, Balasrinivasa R. Sajja, Mariano Uberti, Howard Gendelman, Tammy Kielian, Michael D. Boska

Journal Articles: Radiology

Purpose. To develop a technique to automate landmark selection for point-based interpolating transformations for nonlinear medical image registration. Materials and Methods. Interpolating transformations were calculated from homologous point landmarks on the source (image to be transformed) and target (reference image). Point landmarks are placed at regular intervals on contours of anatomical features, and their positions are optimized along the contour surface by a function composed of curvature similarity and displacements of the homologous landmarks. The method was evaluated in two cases (n = 5 each). In one, MRI was registered to histological sections; in the second, geometric distortions in EPI …

Correlation Of Trpgly And Glytrp Rotamer Structure With W7 And W10 Uv Resonance Raman Modes And Fluorescence Emission Shifts, Azaria Solomon Eisenberg, Laura J. Juszczak Jul 2012

Correlation Of Trpgly And Glytrp Rotamer Structure With W7 And W10 Uv Resonance Raman Modes And Fluorescence Emission Shifts, Azaria Solomon Eisenberg, Laura J. Juszczak

Publications and Research

Tryptophyl glycine (TrpGly) and glycyl tryptophan (GlyTrp) dipeptides at pH 5.5 and pH 9.3 show a pattern of fluorescence emission shifts with the TrpGly zwitterion emission solely blue shifted. This pattern is matched by shifts in the UV resonance Raman (UVRR) W10 band position and the W7 Fermi doublet band ratio. Ab initio calculations show that the 1340 cm−1 band of the W7 doublet is composed of three modes, two of which determine the W7 band ratios for the dipeptides. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the dipeptides take on two conformations: one with the peptide backbone extended; one with the …

Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Faculty Papers

Poster presented at: 8th International Conference on Head and Neck Cancer in Toronto, Canada.

Introduction:

Rats are frequently utilized for both research and training related to reconstructive head and neck surgery. The femoral neurovascular complex represents a useful mode for microvascular anastomosis, both for the purposes of testing adjuncts designed to improve anastomotic patency rates, as well as for residents and students to gain experience in microvascular surgery outside the operating room. Additionally, the rat proves useful in investigations examining the survivability of both random and axial pattern skin flaps.
