The Use Of Social Media For Academic Practice: A Review Of Literature, Retta Guy Jul 2012

The Use Of Social Media For Academic Practice: A Review Of Literature, Retta Guy

Kentucky Journal of Higher Education Policy and Practice

Social media has become extremely popular among college students. It is estimated that several million students across the globe use these resources for personal interactions on a daily basis. As Web-based technologies are designed to support the social architecture of a community, educators and researchers are exploring the integration of social media in education. As scholars explore these new online communities, it is necessary to examine the use of social media tools by students of color, a segment of the population that has historically experienced inequalities associated with the use of and access to technology. The current literature review reports …

Creating Opportunities Or Building Barriers: Framing Policy For Placement Testing As An Impactful Part Of The First-Year Experience, Megan Beach, Karin Ann Lewis

Kentucky Journal of Higher Education Policy and Practice

Placement tests are an integral aspect of the first-year experience. As policymakers seek to raise high school standards and ensure that more students graduate prepared for the academic rigor of college, placement tests are being called upon to serve new purposes. Placement tests are touted for their ability to predict college success, but do these tests really measure student attainment of specific college readiness skills? How can they fit with or contribute to institutional initiatives?

The Fate Of Liberal Education: A Review Of The Marketplace Of Ideas: Reform And Resistance In The American University By Louis Menand, Jill Page Jul 2012

The Fate Of Liberal Education: A Review Of The Marketplace Of Ideas: Reform And Resistance In The American University By Louis Menand, Jill Page

Kentucky Journal of Higher Education Policy and Practice

This book review outlines the argument as presented by Louis Menand in The Marketplace of Ideas: Reform and Resistance in the American University that the problems of general education, the humanities revolution, anxiety about interdisciplinarity, and the politics of professors arise from the way in which institutions sustain and reproduce themselves; thus, he critiques the system of higher education through a historical perspective that speculates the bricks and mortar of a system in which professors reconsider and revise their role in the academic world of liberal education.

Technology In The Classroom: A Deweyan Perspective, Heather E. Davis

Exploring The Roles Of People, Governance And Technology In Organizational Readiness For Emerging Technologies, Abiodun A. Ogunyemi, Kevin A. Johnston

The African Journal of Information Systems

The rapid development and release of emerging technologies have made their adoption challenging. Most often there are failing issues in organizational adoption of emerging technologies. It is yet unclear which component(s) of organization play the prominent role(s) in organizational readiness to adopt emerging technologies. Using a mixed method, this study conducted an online survey of 83 South African organizations for server virtualization adoption. Server virtualization is an emerging technology being widely adopted in most organizations in developed countries. IT executives rated server virtualization as the second-most important technology to help achieve cost reductions and optimize productivity in recent surveys. Very …

Preliminary Investigations Toward A Theory Of Pattern For Technology Design, Annalisa Aguilar Jul 2012

Preliminary Investigations Toward A Theory Of Pattern For Technology Design, Annalisa Aguilar

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

It is argued that today's scarcity of computer tools compatible with human experience derives from an antiquated dualistic model of mind, as passed down through the mid-20th century, during the early development of the computer and artificial intelligence, and up to the present day. Rather than settle for technology as inevitable and instead of depending upon worldviews that are no longer aligned with current empirical findings on human cognition, this thesis renders a broad imperative for a design theory informed by an ecological understanding of mind in society, with a worldview that reflects the historical development of technology as tools, …

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

The recently discovered subdwarf B (sdB) pulsator KIC 11 558 725 is one of the 16 pulsating sdB stars detected in the Kepler field. It features a rich g-mode frequency spectrum, with a few low-amplitude p-modes at short periods. This makes it a promising target for a seismic study aiming to constrain the internal structure of this star, and of sdB stars ingeneral. We have obtained ground-based spectroscopic radial-velocity measurements of KIC 11 558 725 based on low-resolution spectra in the Balmer-line region, spanning the 2010 and 2011 observing seasons. From these data we have discovered that KIC 11 558 …

Sometimes we are our own worst enemies. Research shows that our brains are wired to trade stocks actively, and this often works against us. Even professional managers (such as mutual funds) have a hard time generating consistent outperformance. So, the best managers may be those that understand the psychology of investing and are able to control themselves. See the article here, Wall Street Journal. A good book on the topic is Psychology of Investing, by John Nofsinger.

Plant Lectin Can Target Receptors Containing Sialic Acid, Exemplified By Podoplanin, To Inhibit Transformed Cell Growth And Migration, Jhon Ochoa-Alvarez, Harini Krishnan, Yongquan Shen, Nimish Acharya, Min Han, Dean Mcnulty, Hitoki Hasegawa

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Cancer is a leading cause of death of men and women worldwide. Tumor cell motility contributes to metastatic invasion that causes the vast majority of cancer deaths. Extracellular receptors modified by α2,3-sialic acids that promote this motility can serve as ideal chemotherapeutic targets. For example, the extracellular domain of the mucin receptor podoplanin (PDPN) is highly O-glycosylated with α2,3-sialic acid linked to galactose. PDPN is activated by endogenous ligands to induce tumor cell motility and metastasis. Dietary lectins that target proteins containing α2,3-sialic acid inhibit tumor cell growth. However, anti-cancer lectins that have been examined thus far target receptors …

Vascular Stem Cells In Diabetic Complications: Evidence For A Role In The Pathogenesis And The Therapeutic Promise, Emily C. Keats, Zia A. Khan Jul 2012

Vascular Stem Cells In Diabetic Complications: Evidence For A Role In The Pathogenesis And The Therapeutic Promise, Emily C. Keats, Zia A. Khan

Paediatrics Publications

Long standing diabetes leads to structural and functional alterations in both the micro- and the macro-vasculature. Vascular endothelial cells (ECs) are the primary target of the hyperglycemia-induced adverse effects. Vascular stem cells that give rise to endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and mesenchymal progenitor cells (MPCs) represent an attractive target for cell therapy for diabetic patients. A number of studies have reported EPC dysfunction as a novel participant in the culmination of the diabetic complications. The controversy behind the identity of EPCs and the similarity between these progenitor cells to hematopoietic cells has led to conflicting results. MPCs, on the other …
