Peripheral Nerve Injury Increases Glutamate-Evoked Calcium Mobilization In Adult Spinal Cord Neurons, Suzanne Doolen, Camille B. Blake, Bret N. Smith, Bradley K. Taylor

Physiology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Central sensitization in the spinal cord requires glutamate receptor activation and intracellular Ca2+ mobilization. We used Fura-2 AM bulk loading of mouse slices together with wide-field Ca2+ imaging to measure glutamate-evoked increases in extracellular Ca2+ to test the hypotheses that: 1. Exogenous application of glutamate causes Ca2+ mobilization in a preponderance of dorsal horn neurons within spinal cord slices taken from adult mice; 2. Glutamate-evoked Ca2+ mobilization is associated with spontaneous and/or evoked action potentials; 3. Glutamate acts at glutamate receptor subtypes to evoked Ca2+ transients; and 4. The magnitude of glutamate-evoked Ca2+ responses increases in the setting of …

Fibroepithelial Tumors Of Female Breast: A Review Of 250 Cases Of Fibroadenomas And Phylloides Tumors., Sazan A. Al-Atrooshi

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Fibroepithelial tumors of the breast including fibroadenomas and phylloides tumors arise from epithelial and stromal components of the terminal duct-lobular unit. Fibroadenoma is the commonest benign neoplasm of the female breast. These tumors are found as early as puberty. Mammary phylloides tumors are uncommon stromal-epithelial neoplasms and are divided into benign, borderline malignant and frankly malignant groups on the basis of their histological features. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of morphologic diagnosis in a series of fibroepithelial (biphasic) tumors of the breast including fibroadenoma and phylloides tumor, highlighting the morphological and Histopathological …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

We compiled information on the distribution of ticks in the western Palearctic (11oW, 45oE; 29oN, 71oN), published during 1970–2010. The literature search was filtered by the tick’s species name and an unambiguous reference to the point of capture. Records from some curated collections were included. We focused on tick species of importance to human and animal health, in particular: Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor marginatus, D. reticulatus, Haemaphysalis punctata, H. sulcata, Hyalomma marginatum, Hy. lusitanicum, Rhipicephalus annulatus, R. bursa, and the R. sanguineus group. A few records of other species (I. canisuga, I. …

A Multi-Gene Phylogeny Of Cephalopoda Supports Convergent Morphological Evolution In Association With Multiple Habitat Shifts In The Marine Environment, Annie R. Lindgren, Molly S. Pankey, Frederick G. Hochberg, Todd H. Oakley

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The marine environment is comprised of numerous divergent organisms living under similar selective pressures, often resulting in the evolution of convergent structures such as the fusiform body shape of pelagic squids, fishes, and some marine mammals. However, little is known about the frequency of, and circumstances leading to, convergent evolution in the open ocean. Here, we present a comparative study of the molluscan class Cephalopoda, a marine group known to occupy habitats from the intertidal to the deep sea. Several lineages bear features that may coincide with a benthic or pelagic existence, making this a valuable group for testing hypotheses …

Gene Ontology Analysis Of Pairwise Genetic Associations In Two Genome-Wide Studies Of Sporadic Als, Nora Chung Kim, Peter C. Andrews, Folkert W. Asselbergs, H Robert Frost, Scott M. Williams, Brent T. Harris, Cynthia Read, Kathleen D. Askland, Jason H. Moore

Dartmouth Scholarship

It is increasingly clear that common human diseases have a complex genetic architecture characterized by both additive and nonadditive genetic effects. The goal of the present study was to determine whether patterns of both additive and nonadditive genetic associations aggregate in specific functional groups as defined by the Gene Ontology (GO).

Transcatheter Traetment For Native Aortic Coarctation In Adult (With And Without Stentining), Sadiq Al-Hamash

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Surgical repair was considered the conventional treatment for native aortic coarctation while balloon angioplasty emerged recently as an alternative to surgical repair and considered the treatment of choice in recurrent postoperative coarctation but its use with or without endovascular stent implantation for native coarctation remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate the results of transcatheter treatment for native aortic coarctation in adults and compare the success rates and early complications rates between balloon angioplasty and self expandable stent. METHOD: Fifty one patients with native coarctation underwent transcatheter intervention in two different cardiac centers in Baghdad between January 2001 …

Physical Activity Behaviour Of Paediatric Patients With Type 1 Diabetes, Freya Macmillan, Alison Kirk, Nanette Mutrie

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Type 1 diabetes is a common chronic condition in children and young people and its prevalence is increasing worldwide. Paediatric patients with Type 1 diabetes can have poorer health and overall quality of life than their non-diabetic peers and some studies suggest that they may be less active than their non-diabetic peers. Regular physical activity has many potential health benefits for any young person but can also benefit areas of health specifically important for those with Type 1 diabetes. In addition being regularly active can reduce the risk of developing diabetic complications. Promoting physical activity participation in this population is …

Teaching Information Literacy To Students Of The Long-Tail Market: A Pedagogical Approach, Ashley Paige Ireland Jul 2012

Teaching Information Literacy To Students Of The Long-Tail Market: A Pedagogical Approach, Ashley Paige Ireland

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper presents the perspective that the information-seeking behavior of the “Google Generation” is a product of the market economy in which this generation reached adulthood. This economy is marked vendors who make available everything in a given market, such as iTunes or Amazon.com. Using critical theory and pedagogy, instructors of information literacy are able to stimulate critical thinking, and encourage students to seek the motives for creating information appearing in all types of resources, rather than just those available on the Web.

Tropical Cyclone Rainbands Over Land In South Florida: Multi-Wavelength Radar Observations And Their Educational Applications, Shaunna Donaher Jul 2012

Tropical Cyclone Rainbands Over Land In South Florida: Multi-Wavelength Radar Observations And Their Educational Applications, Shaunna Donaher

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the wind structure observed in outer rainbands of three tropical cyclones in August and September 2008 in South Florida. Average wind profiles during fourteen stratiform periods are evaluated using a velocity-azimuth display (VAD) technique applied to Level-2 Miami (KAMX) WSR-88D data to study wind structure in high vertical resolution from a height of 65 meters to 6550 meters above ground level. The maximum horizontal wind speed in the rainbands is typically observed between 1000-1500 meters in height, with occasional evidence of a secondary horizontal wind maximum near 3500-5000 meters. This secondary maximum is found to be stronger …
